I'm giving this two stars because the guy behind the counter, taking orders and making drinks was very nice and friendly. Their food is very greasy. The kitchen made a big mistake on my order. I politely asked the man behind the counter to take my order off the bill. That's when it got very weird and very rude. The guy was still great, the problem was the woman who had to take my meal charge off my order. I was dumbfounded and in awe of how they ran their restaurant. I would go in for the coffee and other drinks only. Stay away from the food. If they accidentally make your drink wrong, don't expect a refund. Just beware if you intend to use the internet here. They have a ridiculous system with which they have a limited number of access codes, and if it's busy they may not be able to produce any more and you won't be able to get on their internet. They also seemed somewhat unconcerned with the fact that I had just paid for a coffee and pastry, but was not able to access the internet. I would prefer to go to an establishment that provides price disclosure. I was here recently and wanted to order an English muffin and a side of ham separately. The girl said "Oh, you want a ham and cheese crossiant without the cheese." When I questioned pricing for the items separately, she said, "Oh, don't worry we can make this a sandwich." Not sure how an English muffin and a side of ham translates to a ham and cheese crossiant except the price was about $10 and I believe as I wanted to order it would have been less expensive. Great cappuccino and service-but cafe was way too warm to enjoy staying to drink/dine. Guess AC doesn't work well. 2 units were intermittently working, but not keeping it comfortable at all. While we were waiting for our drink, we saw another couple come in and leave because it was "still hot." I overheard them say they had come in the day before and left because it was too warm as they did today. (they thought AC may be fixed) 81 degrees outside and seemed warmer inside. The good- the food is good, esp the Texas toast with eggs or other baked goods like muffin. Pre pandemic , I enjoyed sitting at their big table facing the Main Street with big glass windows. I recently spent two months up in Kennebunk and this was my go to coffee shop. it's a cute spot in Upper Village. Their specialty lattes do not have any bitter aftertaste. I especially enjoyed the Nutella latte. They also have great bagels. I found the staff to be very friendly. My only slight neg was if you order drinks through the toast app, they don't make them until you come in. For me if I order my drink online I'm in a hurry so that I can come in, grab it and go. I think this place has great potential but my actual visit was a 3. They are sorely understaffed and we came in with the only party in front of us finishing their transaction and we waited maybe 7 minutes to order and then waited for a tea and regular hot coffee and 2 breakfast sandwiches for more than 15 minutes. Atmosphere is good, outlets galore. Coffee was excellent and the croissant sandwich was good but I agree with other reviews that the bagel lacked quality. They cook the eggs in a waffle maker and maybe that takes a lot of time? I found it crafty. Friendly staff and clean, open atmosphere with lots of indoor seating. Not impressed with some of the baked goods: bagel was grocery store level quality with prepackaged philadelphia cream cheese. Sandwich of the day on Focaccia bread however was very good. Staff did not know the difference between a cappuccino and latte giving us lots of foam on a latte. We are a busy on the go family of 6. We don't typically take time to do reviews because we like our kids better than our screens. I feel this place absolutely deserves some time. It's lengthy so divided by topic headings. SERVICE: Very excellent! Again as a family with 4 kids were used to noticing subtle eye rolls when we walk into places like this. I worked in a similar environment so I get it. We were greeted gregariously by a very kind young person working the counter. Since we're a crew we offered to stay outside, she came outside to take our orders having to run back in periodically for various reasons such as bring out a load of focaccia bread to show my kids what it was as they were trying to decide what to order. She was very engaging, very patient, and even dug up a juice box for our 3 year old when the older kids were getting "cool drinks" The following day, kids were begging for the sandwiches again because they were so awesome but I was reluctant as we were hitting it 15 minutes before their closing time. Once again they were absolutely awesome there. A different employee took our order. I apologized for placing a large order so close to them closing and she said "it's no problem at all, actually it was a little slow today and we appreciate the patronage" Excellent spirit there, excellent attitudes, and frankly I'm impressed just at the fact that people have the ethic to even SHOW UP for work during this time rather than sitting home milking COVID relief. These people don't just show up they are consistently going the extra mile. FOOD AND BEVERAGE QUALITY: We had breakfast sandwiches and as my kids put it, the best breakfast "sarriches" we have ever eaten so far in our time in this planet. They were very fresh, eggs perfectly cooked, well arranged (not falling apart with melted cheese gloobing all over the place, and they were FILLING!! Perfect on the go to fuel us up for the day of surfing. My OOOOOONLY critique is maybe toast the English muffins just a teeny bit longer (but that's a matter of personal taste) We adults had iced mochas. I am not a big coffee drinker, but more because I think most coffee drinks taste bitter and nasty. I lived on a coffee farm in Tanzania and got spoiled by fresh pea berry coffee right off the plant! So while I don't get excited about coffee drinks I felt these were excellent. I actually enjoyed drinking it rather than drinking it out of obligation because I ordered it. It was very smooth, not bitter. I ordered the same on our return visit and am excited to try their other drinks which from me is saying A LOT! FACILITY: Very clean, very sharp. Not cluttered. When traveling with kids open aisles and spaces are nice so they're not bumping into everything. This place was just awesome. Very open. Bathrooms were extremely clean and tidy. PHILOSOPHY: I spotted who I decided must have been the owner doing some paperwork. I was so impressed with the operation I introduced myself and thanked her for such an excellent place. We chatted briefly and she shared a bit of her business philosophy and vision. Very cool lady with an excellent heart. She cares very deeply for her community and her employees. An exemplary business owner. I felt very honored to have the chance to support her venture. OVERALL: I highly recommend The Blue for excellent service, food, atmosphere, and reasonable prices.
