It's one of the coolest winery tours I've been on. The caves are a massive labyrinth carved into the hillside and naturally stay around 55 degrees year round, which is where they age a lot of their wine before bottling. Even if you've been to a lot of wineries, this is something a little different. At the time I'm writing this, tastings are still complimentary, which is almost unheard of these days. If you go, do them a favor and leave with a bottle or two. That's how places like this are able to keep offering experiences like this, and honestly, you'll probably want to take some wine home anyway.

But the experience on the ground was bad enough that none of that mattered by the time we left. We didn't have a reservation, that's on us. But the website says reservations are recommended, not required, so we figured we'd try anyway. From the moment we walked in, it was clear we weren't wanted. The hostess hustled us into a side room, then walked off, at which point a server immediately told me -- not pleasantly -- that I was standing in the wrong place. When I asked about a few wines I was interested in, I was met with a clear lack of interest, capped off by being rudely told to just get a glass of muscat, like the suggestion was as much about getting rid of me as it was a recommendation. So that's what we did, and then we left. We tasted at several other wineries in Paso Robles that day and had wonderful experiences at every one of them. Staff who were warm, knowledgeable, and genuinely happy to have us, reservation or not. Sculpterra was the only stop where we walked away having spent next to nothing, and it's the only place on the entire trip we'll never go back to, no matter how nice the grounds are. We were told our only options were to come back in an hour, a "limited" tasting, drive all the way downtown, or just pick up our shipment and leave. ​We asked for the Wine Club Manager to resolve the situation, but she wasn't on-site. To be offered a "partial" tasting as a favor after nearly ten years of support was the final straw. It feels as though they now prioritize "closing" new members over honoring the people who have supported them for years. They've gone mainstream and lost the personal touch that made them special.

We loved the spell and got 3 bottles of that! It's a Syrah cab blend. Has the Paso flavor that we love. It's not a vineyard, just a tasting room but worth a visit. We met the wine maker too.
