This cheese shop is clearly doing something right. The space is charming, the selection impressive, and the quality of ingredients speaks for itself. But if you're planning a visit, build in serious buffer time. We stopped in on Memorial Day and, with several parties ahead of us in line, didn't place our order until nearly 20 minutes after arriving. By the 45-minute mark, our food still hadn't come out for two paninis and a soup. What made it especially frustrating was watching parties who arrived after us get their cheese orders and drinks served before anyone had even started assembling our sandwiches. It was clear the shop was understaffed for the holiday weekend, with one person managing the counter and another in the back prepping. We ended up asking to take the sandwiches cold just to get out the door, only to have both stuffed into one small bag, sloppily wrapped. The soup, unfortunately, came out lukewarm regardless. None of this felt malicious. The shop has an unhurried, artisanal quality that's part of its appeal, but that can't fully account for the gap between the experience and a nearly hour-long wait for a simple lunch order while others moved ahead of us. Great spot in downtown Paso Robles to pick up some cheese for your charcuterie boards! Easy parking, friendly service, very cute shop. I had all my materials already and just needed the cheese, but the shop was well stocked with the best brands of crackers, jams/spreads, pate, olives, etc. There was even a delivery of fresh baguettes while I was there that smelled heavenly. I was able to try a few samples of cheese and left with 4 for my board. My husband and I loved them all, and I wish we had time to stop by again before we had to leave Paso Robles! I also picked up a duck salami which was delicious!! If you don't make your own charcuterie boards, you also have the option for them to make you one with 3-5 cheeses. How do you rate a cheese shop? Variety - outstanding. On the day I was there they had a white stilton with mango & ginger, a cheddar with horseradish & parsley, and Cypress Truffle Tremor. All excellent choices and relatively hard to find. Service - strong. Both staff members were helpful and polite. They let us try five varietals (and we bought three of them). I described a cheese I had eaten but couldn't remember the name -- they knew it but sadly didn't have it. Environment -- ok. All of the cheeses are in a fridge so you can't tell what they have. There's no real menu to choose from so it's a bit hit and miss. Prices - high. Ok Paso is full of drunk tourists so this is to be expected. I'm still coming back. read more

I love this place. I try to go here whenever I am in the area. The staff is always friendly and knowledgeable. They let you try the cheeses before you purchase and even recommend cheeses if you are not super familiar with different types (like me) I first heard of this place from the wineries we visited at the time. The two wineries we went had these amazing cheeses that I had to ask where it was from. This place does supply a bunch of the wineries in the area so you know this place is good. They also have cured meats (hot coppa is our favorite) jams, jellies, other items that are found in a charcuterie board, they even have sandwiches and cheese plates! We love the fig & prosciutto panini. It was savory, sweet, umami,delicious. I used to love mimolete cheese but the staff got me hooked on some aged gouda. I do love those umami crystals. Fresh mozz, roasted red peppers, and a pesto mayo on lovely ciabatta bread. Other than a little saucy (double the mayo as I would've liked), it was delish. Also had nibbles of the cheese plate (courtesy from someone else in my party), and that my friends, is a total winner. Loved the 5 or so types of cheeses (bleu, brie, machego, others) and so so good. Cheese -- they know what they are doing here, that's for sure. While, yes, you could come anytime for a sandwich or a pound of this or that, but a sandwich "to go" is where it's at. My one gripe about Vivant is that they're all the way in Paso and I'm all the way in Los Gatos. I would seriously be a weekly customer otherwise. They're -always- on my list when we're visiting Paso. Gourmet cheese shops aren't cheap but they are a great place to explore many cheeses. We saw the yelp free cheese tasting check in so we inquired about that. Several of us got to taste about 10 cheeses until we found a couple that we like. I also ordered a duck salami that was delish ($14). They can help cut the salami into thin slices. It was a b**** trying to cut it with a blunt knife. We learned the hard way since we only told them to cut 2/3 of the salami. The best cheeses were the truffle gouda, Bellavitano Parmesan Style cheese with black pepper, and aged sheep Ewephoria. They also sell a bunch of wine accompaniements and you can order glasses of wine there. There's a lot of pickled olives, veggies, crackers, charcuterie meats, etc. Looks like they have outsoor seating. We brought the stuff we brought to enjoy at wineries. Wished they had name tag signs for the cheese so its easier to know what they are. Di Raimondos Italian Market and Cheese Shop is also great for sampling some cheese a few blocks from here. They have name tag signs on the cheeses. They might have a little less cheese than here, but I'm not sure since it's hard to tell. Yummy. First time here but I can see coming back in the future. Checked in on yelp and got a free tasting. Really like the truffle cheese with ash rind and the lamb cheese- so creamy. We had a cheese pairing at a winery and decided to come over because the pairing had some really excellent and different cheeses, one was a white stilton with mango and ginger, with nice size chunks of the mango and ginger and the other was a honey lemon stilton that tasted like a cheesecake. Since we love cheese we decided to come over and get some to take home. We opted for the mango and ginger stilton and and another super rich stilton with excellent punch in the flavor. There seemed to be a lot of items to choose from and the reason I am not giving this place a five star rating is the tasting the young girl gave was so small it was laughable. Firstly, I need to write a shout out to Courtney, the cheese girl, who was so amazing and sweet. Checking in with YELP and I noticed you get a free cheese tasting. Yahoo! And the cheese tasting began! I can't remember everything we tasted, but it was an endless array of the most delicious morsels popped into my mouth. I ended up purchasing, the Holy cow (a baby swiss) , seascape, and a cheese soaked in merlot. Small portions enough for 1 to 2 people for a picnic. The awesome thing was, you could tell them how much cheese you wanted. Big or small. I wish I could remember all the wonderful cheeses we tasted, but I actually remember we finally had to say, no thank you, we have tried enough cheese. Courtney was so nice, all we had to do was ask a question, "Do you have a spicy cheese?", and the next thing I knew we were eating a chipotle, jalapeno, habanero cheese. mmmm The store was practicing social distancing protocols, everyone had masks, and they were required for customers as well.
