I tend to be hypercritical of places that have menu items about $20, so this is a serious five stars. The food is wonderful, the drinks exciting, the atmosphere is pleasant, and the prices less than you'd expect. The food choices here aren't exactly extensive or exotic, with the twenty-item menu dominated by cuts of meat and pasta, but they execute their dishes perfectly. The menu is a little bacon heavy, but they make their own, so I can excuse their excitement. What is quite impressive are their salads, which are flavorful, but refreshingly light. Also, aside from the meat dishes, the food is pretty cheap. A decent sized plate of pasta is $13, which is as cheap as they come for a nice restaurant. Like most upper end places, the beer selection is not very good. That said, there is no reason to get beer there, they are a wine and cocktails place. And when I say cocktails, I mean REAL cocktails, with good liquor and better bitters; cocktails with integrity. While the drinks are pricey (7ish dollars), they are magnificent and interesting. I would have drunk the whole menu, had I the money. The interior is maybe a little overdone, but it has a nice feel to it. The dim lighting and closely packed tables make you feel like you're in some exclusive private club. They are a little understaffed at times, which can slow down service, but they are nevertheless attentive and friendly. The Bottom Line: The food is great, what more can I say? read more

Hands down my favorite place to go locally! The wine and beer selection is fantastic and locally oriented, and they have an amazing selection of hard to find cocktails! My husband and I have been here tons of times within the last three years and have had a fantastic experience every single time without fail. The food is amazing and consistently so, and the ingredients are local and fresh. Did I mention the totally reasonable prices? Seriously, can not think of a single negative thing about this place, except that I suggest if you are going for dinner on friday or saturday that you make a reservation! Its a busy place! read more

Was visiting daughter and WSU this weekend and chose this restaurant as the reviews looked good. Ambiance was nice, wine selection good, food, not. Lamb chop ordered medium, was received pink and cool. Portobello mushrooms - burnt! No one ever stopped by our table to see how are food was....when our waitress did come by, she asked if we needed boxes...i informed her my dinner was burnt. She took my plate and came back to advise us, that yes, they would give me my main dish at 50% off...we were then handed the bill. When we told her we would like dessert and coffee, seemed a bit put off. Too bad they automatically put 15% tip on all orders. Tips are for earned for service and are not an automatic given. Sorry, we'll spend our money elsewhere next visit. read more

The Black Cypress is a new restaurant that has improved steadily in the last six months with lots of creativity coming out of the kitchen and a staff who seem to care about your dinning experience. It's an important addition to Pullman dining. Try any of their special appetizers and deserts: They are often weird concoctions with subtle blends of flavors and textures that are super delicious. There are some impressive entrees and specials very much worth exploring. All of the Entrees seem to me to be very consistently good lately: I'm partial to the lamb, but everything I've had (about 4 dishes with a couple of repeats) has been somewhere between very satisfying and wonderful. The atmosphere is lovely, mellow, intimate and friendly. The service is excellent, with knowledgeable, attentive and communicative waitrons (is that a word? is it polite?). The place is appropriate for a variety of occasions: casual treat after work, a nice dinner for the out of town visitor, a date. Black Cypress is much cooler than a "family restaurant" but it is appropriate for reasonably well mannered children (maybe not infants or toddlers, though give it a try). Several of the pasta dishes have flavors and textures accessible to young palates and prices reasonable for parents. I'm not an aficionado of fine wines or beers, but they do have a nice selection of both to complement entrees. read more

This place has great ambiance. The decorating is top notch, and instantly transports you away from the often kitschy shops in Pullman. The food is fantastic; I recommend the carbonara because they put bacon in it that they SMOKE THEMSELVES! This bacon is incredible, and available for purchase by the pound (do it, just don't cook it in strips. This isn't your breakfast bacon, and better suited to candying/baking/cooking). UPDATE 4/10/2016 : We decided we would go in and give this place another try. Our experience this time was much better. The food was good and our service was on point. We will likely be back in the future. Also, after our initial review, the restaurant contacted us and offered to comp our meal or buy us our next one. We opted for neither but appreciated their attempt to do right by us. =========================================== We went in for our anniversary thinking it would be fun to get all dressed up and have a nice dinner. After asking a few co-workers where we should go, this was at the top of the list. We were very excited to try this local restaurant for our special occasion. The food was fairly good and our server was friendly, but I was unfortunately a little disappointed. We were sat in a corner booth/table across from the bar. The pew I was sitting on was uncomfortable and the table was very small. It was in a weird in-between weather period so the a/c wasn't on and it was very stuffy. Our appetizer came out with our food which packed our little table to the point that we barley had room for our drinks. Additionally, my husband's salad never made it out of the kitchen, which worked out since we wouldn't have anywhere to put it on the now covered tabletop. We ended up just canceling it so the server comped us a desert...which we also heard her do for 3 other tables that were near us. The drinks were great, our appetizer was just OK, and the food was good, but the desert we received was a lukewarm brownie with melted ice cream, so it didn't make much of an impact. We have been to Pullman twice in the last two years and have had dinner at the Black Cypress each time. Both have been some of the best meals we've had anywhere. Worth the 5 1/2 hour drive from Seattle if you wanted to come here just to have dinner. Jacob our server, was fantastic! Great recommendations. Everything earned five stars -- from the cocktails, to the souvlaki appetizer, to the main dishes (lamb chops and shish kebabs), to the deserts (goat cheese panna cotta). I thought everything about this place was just right. I liked the old-fashioned light bulbs in the fixtures. The wait-staff was very nice. The music playing (Animal Collective, when I was there) was great. My server suggested a good white wine for me, exactly the taste I was looking for. For my meal, I had the delicious toasted haloumi sandwich with mint and fig paste. The salty cheese, sweet fig, and mint flavors were so good together, I couldn't stop smiling while I was eating! Then I had the beet salad with pistachios, turnips, and parsley. It was simple and wonderful. The dinner special (scallops with gnocci) and dessert (banana split) both looked great, but I was too full to eat anything else. If I had my way, I'd kidnap this restaurant and take it back to Seattle with me. read more

The service was incredibly slow. It took an hour and fifty minutes from the time we arrived until the time we were served. It was about half an hour before the server even took our order. When we couldn't find our server to follow up on a request we had made twenty minutes earlier, we asked another server for help. Her response was that she wasn't our server. No apologies were offered for the slow service. It was terrible to be treated so badly. In addition, the food was only average. read more

Had a very pleasant meal here. Started with the cheese plate that came with yummy cougar gold cheddar, gorgonzola blue cheese, Brie, spicy candied walnuts, thin slices green apples, fig crackers and a strawberry butter jam (or something similar). Cougar gold was delicious. Being a bit boring I ordered the beet salad which was very good and the tomato bisque soup which was more of an orange color but absolutely amazing!! The folks I was with had the kabobs that were mostly meat. They seemed to enjoy them. The service was fantastic and the ambience was very nice. Only thing I was not in love with was the smokey aroma - it smelled a bit like someone was grilling inside the restaurant. This restaurant is hands-down the best on the Palouse. Every one of their dishes are amazing, and would make Gordon Ramsay proud. It's a little pricey, so expect to drop about 90 bucks for two people if you want to have a decent meal , however it's totally worth it. so sad, this restaurant started out with great hopes for quality in Pullman but has,over the years, slowly gone down hill to successfully achieve mediocrity. Not sure the menu has changed at all. It is great if you plan to visit just once or twice but why would anyone would go back a third time? has to be just to brag that you have money to waste .There is really nothing terrible, it is just boring. Flavors are OK but not anything amazing (and we've had every item on the menu) The first time we went there, shortly after it opened, we had the clam appetizer and it was amazing, but has been only good since then. So, I'm in Pullman working on a story for E:60 on Washington State head coach Mike Leach. The crew and I were looking for a local spot to get a nice dinner after a long day of filming. Coach told us, "Go to Black Cypress and tell Nick I sent you." Consider this an all time recommendation. This gem sits right in the quaint downtown area. As soon as you walk in, you can smell the kitchen, always a sign of a high quality establishment. The motif was elegant. Plenty of seating and a bar area. To start, I ordered a small Caesar salad. It may have been the best I've ever had. The romaine lettuce was crisp, the shaved parmesan cheese was perfectly sharp, and the dressing was delicious and not overpowering. For my main entree, I got spaghetti marinara with meatballs. The pasta was perfect. The sauce was tangy and covered with the right amount of basil. The meatballs, 3 in total, had the right blend of flavor. One of my colleagues got the ribeye steak with mashed potatoes and seasonal vegetables. It looked mouthwatering, and according to him, it hit the spot. Another of my guys got the seafood over rice (Clams, scallops, and shrimp) that was equally terrific. I almost got the pork chop which I heard from another guest was sensational. Next time through town, that's what I'm getting. Lastly, the prices were very affordable and the portion sizes were large. Me and a coworker were just in town from the Bay Area for a few days on business and all the locals kept suggesting we come here. We were not disappointed. Compared to even SF quality food, this blew us away! I have to give a shout out to our server Jacob who went so far above and beyond: -my friend couldn't decide on what drink she wanted, so she described what she likes and he came back with some amazing custom drink -we told him we were getting two entrees and splitting both. He split both entrees without us even asking for that! -he gave us a free dessert on the house. I was shocked by his niceness! If you can't decide what to get, my perfect meal was the Caesar salad, order both prime rib and roasted chicken and split with a friend (seriously can't decide which I like better), pair it with any of their delicious cocktails, and finish it off with a brownie with marshmallow topping. We were VERY happy with our meal here. Everything from the service to the cocktails to the food was spot-on. You can tell they put a lot of thought into the food here. I'll be honest and say that we weren't expecting a great meal. I shouldn't go into any restaurant feeling that way, but when you're in a small town exploring the fine dining scene, it's hard to be optimistic. However, I'm happy to say that this place exceeded expectations by a long shot. This place has an incredible cocktail menu. A huge selection of house cocktails that, as far as we could tell, were well-executed. We really enjoyed our drinks at least. I had the Rhubaro (Zucca Amaro, rhubarb bitters, lemon, soda, rocks) because I love anything with rhubarb in it. But I would wager that even if you don't like rhubarb you'll probably love this drink. Well-balanced and delicious. We ordered the hummus appetizer, which in hindsight was nothing special. Yup, that's hummus! But also, there was nothing wrong with it. It was just okay. The main course, however, was really delicious. I had salmon. It was cooked perfectly, and the roasted vegetables on the plate were also cooked perfectly. My husband had lamb with a wheat berry salad. The lamb was delicious, but the wheat berry salad was awesome! It was very bright and flavorful, and I put it on my list of things to try to recreate at home. Also, it would be wrong not to mention the dinner rolls here. They are insanely good. The most tender dinner rolls I have ever had. I know it sounds silly to rave about dinner rolls, but these taste like something your dream grandmother made. So incredibly delicious. I highly recommend this place if you're in town. It's more than worth a stop. read more

4.5 stars. In my opinion, Black Cyprus is the best food in the Pullman/Moscow area. Some of the dishes may sound ordinary, but the flavors are so well done. Try the chicken or lamb chops, you wont regret it. Normally I think chicken is bland and I seldom order it in a restaurant, but here it is so, so good. Bread pudding is also a must. read more
