I have never had an unpleasant visit to Big Red Tomato. Be it for take-out or dine-in. During today's dine-in visit, every single item was very good. We started with the Stuffed Portobello appetizer (Portobello Mushrooms generously stuffed with spinach, ricotta, garlic & herbs, and topped with melted mozzarella). A good app selection and recommended. The entrees were all so good, generous portions, and all fresh: Chicken Parmigiana and Tortellini, with green pesto sauce and mushrooms. I always order Penne Pasta, with garlic and oil and I highly recommend this accompaniment and/or side. It will always be a pleasure to visit Big Red Tomato and is highly recommended. Complimentary bread is always warms up and ready to please everyone. Fried calamari - Tad bit dry and chewy. I wished it would be softer. Not sure why the calamari felt dry. Mussels in red sauce - Well, the sauce was good enough to dip the bread!! But, again, mussels were soooooo tiny and dry, it felt impossible to detach them from the shell. Penne Mari was good as usual. Their vodka sauce is always a must. Can't go wrong with the vodka sauce. The Special Pie !!!! Yes, very special and very good !!!!!!! Must order. Nightmare delivery... restaurant used Uber Eats to deliver my order. Driver didn't speak or understand any English. Restaurant packed my entrees in a pizza box but didn't tell the driver. When delivery showed up, I told him that I didn't order any pizza. Driver went back to the restaurant. I even called the restaurant (the person who answered the phone didn't speak English, ended up passing it to someone else) Restaurant was not apologetic al all, accusing me for not checking the pizza box for food that I ordered. They insisted that I had to take my order that all the food was cooked more than an hour ago (and I ordered pasta dish, imagine how soggy and mushy was...) Pasta and veggies were very salty but chicken and salmon were tasteless (not even a hint of salt). Overall, bad service and food experience got me no choice but to rate 1 star. Went here for lunch for a quick bite. We ordered our slices and asked if we could sit and eat in the restaurant. We wanted it to be fresh and knew we wouldn't be staying long. My Margherita pizza slice was a true, fresh taste. It came straight from the oven, I bit into it too fast, however I couldn't help it because it did taste delicious. Service was okay, the main guy at the front we didn't think was too friendly. We got our slices once he told us it was done. Maybe because we chose to stay and eat there, it was an issue? I don't know. We ordered here on doordash a couple of years ago, not what we expected on being approached, but good pizza can be a saving grace. Parking can be tricky. Watch out for the meters. We've been here before and it was much better. I'll try to mention the good, the bad, and the ugly. The bread was hot and fresh. The garlic knots were delicious. I wish they brought more. My husband's dish was good and so was his daughter's. She had chicken Marsala. He had chicken with brown sauce. I'm had grilled chicken Parmesan. It was a huge portion but the chicken was dry and hard as a rock. The broccoli was way undercooked and very hard. What made matters worse was that they didn't give us sharp knives to use and I was unable to cut my food. Had to ask several times and they gave me an attitude saying they had to clean them. So while my food got cold by the time they brought the knives it was too hard to cut anyway. I also had to keep asking for refills for our water glasses. The service was not very good. Went to Big Red Tomato for my mom's birthday and we were seated right away with a party of 8. We ordered the calamari for an appetizer and the calamari was served in big pieces. It was nice and crispy. I ordered fettuccini Alfredo with chicken and it was good, but the star was the pizza! Lots of pepperoni and the crust was crispy yet soft on the inside. BIG RED! Another one-of-a-kind Italian restaurant that has existed for decades! 26 years exactly I believe. If you are in the Fort Lee area and want an amazing chicken parm, amazing pasta, and free garlic knots, don't walk, RUN HERE! My 100% go-to items are the Chicken Parm (obviously), Chicken francese, Clams with Linguini, Garlic Knots, and a shrimp salad, to pretend to be healthy. LOL. It's the marina sauce for me here... like to die for. Top-quality and top-tasting. The chicken in the chicken parm is always tender, never chewy or fat. It's always baked to perfection, especially with the fresh mozzarella on top. The marina sauce is sooooo flavorful it's ridiculous. I usually ask for a separate togo cup to bring home. The chicken francese is so bomb... I can't compare the two chicken dishes, they are both that good. The shrimp salad comes with spinach and onions, it's always fresh. However, its a salad lol, I do get it with balsamic vinegar. The garlic knots are my favorite part, because they are free and always fress. The are super tiny, but I just love the fact that they are free. A little customer appreciation. I don't believe they are free if you just order pizza, (not sure). Talk about pizza, OMG OMG OMG. This is an old review and we haven't been back ever since our last experience. Years ago, we used to come here on occasion since it was close by. Our family came here for dinner service one night. The place was a bit busy and we had a party of about 7. We brought our own wine and it took the waiters 15 minutes to even help open our bottle and we had to flag them down a couple of times for this. The service was extremely slow and food took forever to come out. After we pointed this out and asked for updates, they became increasingly rude. Just felt like they were neglecting our party. My family and I came here for dinner after a friend recommended it to my uncle. We started with the calamari and the stuffed portobello. We also got compliments bread and garlic knots. The bread and garlic knots were tasty. The appetizers took SO long to arrive to the table. The calamari wasn't like your the typical calamari dish. We got a plate of the huge rings that weren't very. The rings were too big and the app was so underwhelming/disappointing. The stuffed portobello was ok. To eat we got fettuccini Alfredo, penne vodka with crispy chicken, lasagna and spaghetti with meatballs. When the entrees arrived, they didn't look like they'd be that good. But the food tastes a lot better than it looks. We all agreed that our dishes were good. The servers were really nice but they seemed a little overwhelmed. My husband and I tried out this locally famous restaurant for dine in and it was amazing. There wasn't a wait, we were seated right away. The bread and butter came with soft garlic knots that had a generous covering of parmigiano. We had Buffalo chicken wings for appetizers covered in cheesey sauce with blue cheese on the side. Our pasta dishes were both phenomenal. The penne vodka was rich and the linguini Mariano was also equally great. I can't wait to come back to try their pizza. read more

Our conversation after I repeated the reason for my call and told him how many people we were trying to feed went something like this: ME: Can you make some recommendations from the menu? HIM: You need to order half trays (for the amount of people). I recommend you order an appetizer, salad, pasta and chicken. ME: OK, but can you make any dish recommendations? HIM: You need to choose. I can't choose for you. ME: Yes, I will choose, but can you make any recommendations? You have over 20 pastas on the menu -- anything you can recommend? HIM: Like I told you I recommend you getting an appetizer, a pasta, a chicken... blah blah blah. ME: OK - so you can't make any specific dish recommendations then? HIM: Have a nice day ma'am. Really confused initially and now kind of annoyed after that call. How hard is it to make a recommendation anyway? You can't tell me what's popular, for example? Not the most helpful -- not sure why. It doesn't look like much when you pass by, and I feel like it's not on a street that gets a lot of foot traffic but I'm glad that I was invited here for the first time bcuz I've been back over 10X already. The dinners are cooked perfectly and even though there are no vegan options on the menu, it's very easy to get one made, and everything is always delicious. I love the complimentary garlic knots and bread (with a side of sauce) that starts off the meal. There always seems to be the same people working every time, so at times service can be a little slow when it gets crowded but the food is always worth the wait and you get some extra time to chat with your dinner mates, which is always nice when you don't feel rushed. My wife and I came here for a pleasant Sunday lunch. It was easy to find parking on the street and you don't have to pay the meter on Sunday! We started out with garlic knots and bread. They were nice and warm, quite good. We then split a big red tomato stuffed with sausage stuffing topped with cheese. It was excellent! Really hit the spot. My wife got a pizza slice with tomato and mozzarella. I think my white slice was better; it had lots of garlic on it, my favorite! We wrapped things up with the lunch special - linguine with tomato, mozzarella, and chicken. Yes, we ate a lot and it was worth it. Our total was only about $25! Stopped by for quick lunch at this wonderful spot I used to frequent. Though I've always loved them for their pastas and apps, since it was lunch we ordered seafood salad special and a sausage roll. Our waitress told us the seafood salad is customer favorite. They brought out the signature garlic knots with toasted loaf on top and their knots were still legendary. Sausage roll was surprisingly disappointing. A bit too much dough overall. It is a good portion (~10") though. Seafood salad was ... just without much taste. I ordered it because I had good experience with a shrimp dish few years back, but my mom said she just doesn't know what she's eating because everything was so tasteless. Being Asian, we know our seafood and know it very well because we simply use / eat them more frequently than most US-born Americans. (I'll just say live fish-in-tank to table) After eating 10%, I had to do what I rarely do and ask the restaurant to take it back. I explained with regret to our waitress, and she was understanding, telling us that some love/some hate it. She gave other suggestions, and we ended up just ordering a pasta to take home. However, this manager guy came over saying he wanted to understand what was wrong. So I explained how shrimp tasted like frozen ones over-thawed in microwave (it was tough-rubbery) and he got sort of confrontational stating that's a fresh shrimp. That was a no-no. Respectfully, I know how fresh shrimp tastes and feels like, thank you. I tried to be nice and didn't argue with him, and he left after saying his piece. I wouldn't say he was outright rude, but being confrontational like that was not what I expected from TBRT. So it was a disappointing experience. It's a very cool local Italian joint, it's really a no frills Italian eatery and I dig it. The decor is dimly lit pizzeria decor, but the pastas they offered are a must try. The prices of the pasta are around $15 but the portions are easily enough for leftovers the next day. This a nice small spot for a casual dinner and the food is good, but last night I ordered a gluten free pasta bolognese and asked for the rest to be wrapped to take home. Today for lunch, I was eating my left over pasta and suddenly felt something very crunchy in my mouth. I spit out the food and noticed it was shrimp tails... I did not order shrimp and neither did my friend who I was with so this must've been from someone else's order. I feel disgusting having had someone else's shrimp tails in my dish.
