Luciano's has been a longtime favorite among Wichita's limited selection of Italian restaurants;…read morethe drive to Mulvane, on the other hand, not so much. Strada by Luciano's - a small trailer outfitted with a couple of burners - is not easily found, especially on account of their willingness to venture into the city's southwest side and frequent stops in other cities in the region, like Winfield. They're committed to hitting the road from Monday through Friday for lunch; their whereabouts can be determined from their Facebook page. It was a smart decision to take the show on the road, and even smarter to offer an extremely limited menu to ensure the quality stays high. You can choose from two pasta dishes and a salad. Both pastas are repeats from the restaurant, though they're prepared differently and to varying results. The penne in meat sauce shares the exact same sugo di carne from the mothership, and the pasta finished à la minute gives you a rich sauce and an al dente pasta that is plenty worthy of the Luciano's name. The cheesy bowtie pasta, an imitation of the quattro formaggi, was less successfully composed due to the cream-to-cheese ratio on a recent visit being disappointingly skewed toward the former. The bowtie pasta was still cooked very well, so they are consistent in that regard. You would be burying the lede if you skipped over the salad. It ends up being the most unique aspect of the truck thanks to the ample cone of crisp Parmesan that surrounds the dressed greens. There are nits to be picked here, too, mostly because you end up with too much cheese for the small salad. Ordered alongside one of the pasta dishes, however, makes it easy to find a use for the excess remainder.

The service is friendly and prompt. They had a nice selection of pastas to choose from and even a vegan option. My choice today was a half and half combo: half salad, half pasta. I chose the Mediterranean salad and mottola pasta combo. The salad was great. Light vinaigrette dressing, lots of toppings. However you don't get the parmeasean cup or anything crunchy on top. I missed that aspect. The pasta was the big miss for me. The pasta is cooked well, but the sauce had no flavor and was pretty greasy. Most of all, why was there no bread? Who eats pasta with no bread? I also ordered tiramisu, which came in a lovely little cup. It tasted amazing, but I would have liked another layer of ladyfingers in there. It was pretty heavy towards the creamy side. Totals $16 with tip. Not totally sure it was worth it, but I'd try a different pasta option next time, just to give it another go.

I did not have a good meal at Smokin Diner, and here's why: The pulled pork was the best of the meats they had, though it was mushy and a little dry. No smoke flavor. The brisket was also pulled and sauced, which are two good indicators that it wasn't cooked properly. It was dry. No smoke flavor. I received one rib as part of the sampler plate - it was the end rib on rack, with rib tips. The rib itself was ready to fall off even before it was placed in my foam container, but it spoke nothing of the meat, which was very difficult to pick off. That piece of the rack has a lot of cartilage, so if it's not cooked properly it makes for a tough time. No smoke flavor. The sausage was fine, but it's hard to mess up a sausage. Taking a peek inside the truck as I ordered, I noticed a lot of slow cookers. If they were using them to keep the meat warm, that might explain some of the textural/moisture issues. I also noticed a tub of Great Value potato salad, which was disappointing. To their credit, I visited Smokin Diner at a festival, which puts a lot of demand on the truck to get orders out quickly and can sometimes be a challenge for a food truck to present their absolute best product. To their discredit, this festival was also a barbecue competition, so not 100 yards away there were some of the best pitmasters in the area presenting barbecue so much better than this. I've yet to come across a really good barbecue food truck - I think the challenge of holding the meat at the right temperature is one that has plagued many local trucks - but in the case of Smokin Diner there's too many technical errors and little redeeming qualities to recommend them.

Tried them at Derby, presentation was nice and professional but then it ended. I felt like the food…read morecame off the shelf from Sam's or Kroger and not from scratch. The blackboard on which the day's selections are listed might promise more than the final product can deliver - (the cherry flavored frosting that filled a black forest cupcake was not nearly as good as the apple pie filling in the apple pie cupcake), and you may find that the cupcake you like the best isn't what you thought it was going to be (the spiced cake, again in the apple pie cupcake), but they're all moist and sweet and well worth a few bucks. The problem with a brick-and-mortar cupcakery is that I have to deliberate walk into the establishment and order my shameful sugar fix; a food truck makes it impulsive because you're never quite sure where they're going to be. On the other hand, it also dooms me to ordering the chocolate and peanut butter cupcake every time I see them, because Brown Box does it a lot better than Smallcakes.
