We were in the vicinity and had heard good things. First impression, the people were very friendly and the vibe of the customers was positive. We ordered the Fish Dinner: $15.99 for 2 fillets and 2 sides. We ordered onion rings and mac 'n' cheese. I thought the fish batter was very nicely seasoned and flavorful. But I was disappointed in how thin the fillets were. Not very meaty. The onion rings were just ok, tasted like a "frozen from a box" ring rather than hand made on site. The mac 'n' cheese was pretty tasty. We were there at 4pm on a Sunday, and they had a nice steady stream of customers. I'm glad for that, and glad we tried it. But I don't think we'll go back. Saw all the Wichita foodies suggesting this place so our family decided to give it a try. Family of 5 so we had a big order. We expected a bit of a wait. Was 20 min, which wasn't too bad. Ordered a burger, chick sandwich, big back sandwich. Chicken club and a kids meal. The burger was very thin but had a lot of flavor. Fries were okay. The fact that they were hand cut was a plus. Flavor was a little bland. Big back sandwich had a pork chop on it. It was extremely over cooked and tough. Kind of killed the sandwich. Now the chicken sandwich and the club sandwich were amazing!!! Probably the best Wings in the city. I tried about 10 different flavors at one time and they were all perfect. The wings came out extra crispy and I didn't even have to ask. The amount of flavor each bite shows consistency in the kitchen. I didn't wait too long for my food to come out. This place was extra busy, which means they have the best food and the best service. Family own business, which is a plus for me. Food was spot on! I ordered the land and sea dinner.The fish and okra was a 10/10!!! Very fresh and seasoned to perfection. The chicken was fried a little too hard for me, it still was good just super crunchy. The shrimp was ok, I did not care for batter of the shrimp 6/10. The lady cooking the food let me try Val's sweet heat, it was very good. They also offer a full bar with daiquiri machines available. It was too cold for me to have one but I definitely will when it gets warmer. I highly recommend giving this place a try, it's the best fried fish I've had thus far in Wichita. Perfectly seasoned, tender, and full of Southern soul. The mac and cheese? Absolutely nailed it creamy, cheesy, and baked just right. It didn't miss a single step. But the real star? The catfish. Crispy on the outside, flaky and flavorful on the inside. Perfectly cooked and seasoned like someone's grandma was back there handling business. Nelson's Kitchen deserves way more than 5 stars. Went to Nelsons today @ 4:10pm at the 21st street location. I ordered smothered pork chops, wings, okra, macaroni and cheese, and mashed potatoes. Once I arrived home, I opened the container to see the smothered pork chops I ordered had no gravy. They were thin, flat, extra crispy, and salty. The wings were room temperature.
