Wasn't thrilled at the start after being g told by the bartender that I could sit on a high top table at the bar. Then was confronted by the waitress telling me it was reserved. On an immensely frigid night, we entered this cozy restaurant and immediately felt like we were greeted by a warm hug. It's a great spot for dinner, but expect a wait when you get there because they don't take online reservations. You have to be physically present to put yourself on wait list, but you're free to roam around after that. We were told the wait was gonna ~45 minutes for us, but we were seated in half that time! We were famished upon arrival and everything on the menu sounded so appetizing. We opted for a couple of entrees and appetizers for the group to share and asked them to bring it out as they go: POUTINE (with pulled pork added on): The pulled pork is a couple of bucks extra, but I think it's well worth it as it adds additional protein and dimension to the fries. The cheddar cheese curds paired with the warm gravy made them perfectly soft and melty. Fries were well seasoned and still very crispy underneath everything. BURRATA: I love how such a simple appetizer can always be so delicious. The burrata was paired with toasted crostinis drizzled with balsamic reduction and tomato bruschetta. The amount given was actually plentiful for everyone in the group to have enough. RACK OF RIBS: The sweet and savory meat fell right off the bones and was by far one of the best dishes on the night. As the meat slipped off the bone, it laid nicely on a pillowy soft pile of Yukon mashed potatoes. The mashed potatoes were smooth, rich and creamy and absorbed all the juices from the ribs. If there's anything you should order from here, it's this. CHICKEN POT PIE: Maybe because I had higher expectations for this, but this was a bit lackluster to me. It was more of a deconstructed pot pie as the biscuit laid on top of a conglomerate of veggies and chicken. This made the biscuit easy to mix in with the filling, but I found the filling a little too thick and mashed potato-like. The filling was also a little too bland for me despite how loaded it was. MOSS GLEN PIZZA: I am a huge fan of mushrooms on pizza. Topping it with truffle oil was the cherry on top. The crust was thin and crispy, but also held everything together very well. It was almost impossible to not reach for a second slice, because it was that delicious! It took us a lot of strength to get up and come here for dinner after a long day of boarding, but this meal gave us life and the energy we needed for the next day. read more

We've been into a few restaurants in Stowe during our vacation. This one is real kid friendly that we don't get mean looks. The waitress was thoughtful and so nice. Food was good as well. We had ravioli, ribs and half duck. The duck breast came out bloody. The waitress explained to me that it's supposed to be medium rare. I told her I would feed my toddler the duck so I wanted it not to be rare. She was happily take it back to cook more. She checked on us often even she was busy. They didn't take reservation so try to come when they just open to avoid the wait. We were there around 5:30pm. The host told us it's about 45-1h wait but it's was actually 30mins. Not that bad. Came for dinner with my coworkers on a Tuesday at 5:30 pm. It was one of only a few places open on Tuesday and we got sat right away! The staff were nice and the food came out fast. I ordered the fish tacos with mango salsa. They were good but could have had more of a sauce or something in them. Even with the salsa it was a little dry. My coworkers really liked the chicken Mac. The ambiance of the restaurant is very cozy with a nice roaring fire in the pizza oven and lots of draft beer choices.. Got water immediately PARKING: there was a decent sized lot in front, but could get tough to find parking during peak dinner hours INTERIOR: cozy diner vibes. What a great first impression!!! Our first time here and everything was phenomenal. The bacon Bleu burger was to die for. Fries were perfect. My wife had a salad with chicken breast. Loved the nachos with spiced honey, creamy blue cheese and salty bacon pieces (sweet and salty). The Vermonter pizza (another sweet and salty creation), meatloaf with sage gravy, mashed potatoes and fried onions, the fish &chips and the steak frites were all done very well. Desserts were elevated (and devoured), using a homemade marshmallow and high quality chocolate to recreate the traditional s'more. The salmon and the ribs were amazing! The lobster ravioli was goi but was served cold. It was a timing issue I believe because it tasted good but just cold compared to the two other dishes served at the same time. Service read not so good in that she could have checked on us sooner and addressed the issue. I had to excellent dinners at the bench during my stay in Stowe. The first night, I came in a little late, and sat at the bar, where I was served by the delightful Lin (not sure about the spelling - - I forgot to ask). I ordered the Pinnacle Pizza, as they have a woodfired oven. The pizza is basically a Margarita Pizza with tomatoes. It was delicious. The second tonight was my birthday, and I was pleasantly surprised to see Lin there again, as she was supposed to have the day off. But she was filling in, much to my own satisfaction. I had intended to come in for a couple cocktails, but ended up staying in ordering the half rack of ribs for dinner. They were fall off the bone tender, and I was very happy with my meal. This is a popular place, and in the summer, it does have outdoor seating as well as seating in the bar and dining room. I recommend The Bench highly. read more

4 visits during our 2 week Stowe vacation in June this year. Table for 2, then table for 5, then table for 2, and then a special dessert trip. Table for 5 started off with drinks... 2 shed mountain ales for me (yum), 2 sweet mandarin grapefruit drinks and a river roost mas verde... and OJ. Next up... scallops, house salad, pulled pork sandwich, the classic burger and an excellent Kid's Pasta. Grandson gobbled the pasta - that almost never happens. Would have been 4 stars but we had a bizarre experience having dinner. They close at 9pm on weekdays and we knew we wouldn't arrive until after 8pm. We called to confirm how late the kitchen was open, but they only have a recording so we showed up anyway and the parking lot was mostly full. Upon arrival around 8:20 the hostess asked us how many so we told her 2. She started to seat us so we asked about food and she gave his this rambling response about the kitchen being open, but the servers weren't taking new tables, but we could eat at the bar. We made it to the bar and had an almost identical conversation with the bartender who told us we can order but the kitchen is going to be mad at her. For context, the 10 person bar had 8 people seated plus guests at 3 high top tables. We eventually ordered food and drinks and it came out promptly. I got the fried chicken sandwich and it was really good - juicy and crispy. My husband got the pulled pork. Also good but he didn't love the slaw. The fries were good too. The entire time we're waiting and then eating the staff is aggressively cleaning up. Unloading the bar dishwasher while making cocktails, emptying/cleaning the bar trays, etc. Staff were cleaning dining tables and putting chairs up so they can clean the floor. Meanwhile we're paying our bill at 9pm and 2 men who've been nursing their entrees order dessert without a problem. Guess if you're a regular you are treated differently. read more
