Steak Frites and Meatloaf dish
Taylor W.

The Bench was enjoyable and as early arrivals around 5:30pm, we most definitely beat the crowd. We watched this restaurant fill completely on a Monday night around us with a wait. The ambiance was casual and we were not rushed. We ordered Steak Frites and the Meatloaf and were extremely happy with our choices. Our service was great and we would definitely go back.

Ordered the Bruce (pictured) and the Sensation wood fired pizzas. Excellent. Neat atmosphere. Highly recommend.

If I were to just write one thing in this review, I would say - get the cookie skillet! And don't forget to add the Ben & Jerry's ice cream. My group shared a pizza which was delicious. The crust was definitely a highlight coming out of the brick oven. We all also got burgers and shared the smoked wings. The smoked wings left some smoking nuts to be desired, and the dry rub was not very flavorful. I probably would not get that again. They were OK for wings, but definitely not for smoked wings. The burgers were very classic burgers delicious but nothing special our friends got the classic burger while we got the bench burger, which came with bacon and onions. Funnily enough I thought our french fries were kind of burnt but still good. Finally, we wrapped up with the cookie skillet and that was the absolute highlight. I wish I could have eaten four of those by myself. When we got there, the weight was about an hour. We were able to put our names down until they called us. Once we receded, the service was great, and the food came out very quickly. It is a really cute spot and Stow and probably one of the better casual sit down restaurants in the area. It's super tough to get seated anywhere during peak ski season so even an hour wait was on the shorter end for a lot of these spots

Ambiance: Like a quaint dive bar with a really cool rustic setup -- a giant wood pizza oven and a bar on the other side. Service: It was alright. No complaints. Food: For the cost of the burger, we'd just expected more. Flavors and cohesiveness was good but not mind-blowing. Poutine was probably our favorite because the gravy was extremely delicious. Pizza was also on the same boat of just okay. I would've like a little bit thicker dough (and char) to offset the saltiness.

The atmosphere definitely gives an Apres Ski vibe with TVs around the bar and a cozy setting. The bartender served us at our table and gave suggestions for our meal choices. Being a cold November day, the Poutine hit the spot with local Vermont cheese curds. For our meal we had the Scallops (that are cooked on the wood fire) and the Chicken Caesar Wrap. The scallops weee cooked to perfection with a subtle smoke flavor from the fire and the wrap was a perfectly nutritious lunch choice. Overall, a great lunch to warm up!

We ate at some incredible places during our long weekend trip to Stowe, but the Bench topped them all in terms of overall experience. From the cozy, crackling fire, to the hot and fresh fare, this place is truly a gem. I came here with one friend and we asked to sit at the "oven bar" so we could watch the pizza oven expert in action. It was fascinating to watch -- like dinner and a show -- and the food he was cranking out was AMAZING. We had just eaten wood fired pizzas the night before at another restaurant, so we both chose some different dishes on the menu. The curry mussels were serious mind-blowing, the half duck was PERFECTLY cooked, and the fire-roasted kitchari was packed with flavor! Of course, we had to top it all off with a yummy s'more

This place rock. The kale Caesar wrap was insane. The mac & cheese was so good. A lot of places like they have good mac & cheese, but this place actually has it. The Middle Eastern dish of rice and vegetables was super good as well. Comes out on a skillet. My favorite was probably the Kelsey 's rap. It's perfectly massage to Kayla and the sauce that holds all together was so good.

Fire roasted kitchari with chicken

Had the best experience here on a Saturday evening! This place has been busy every time we go by so I'm glad we tried it. Big parking lot making parking easy. Came in around 7pm and there was a small wait for a table. But we were able to get a seat right away at the pizza bar. The pizza bar was a really fun place to sit. You were able to see the kitchen making the food. The menu has a variety of different food such as pizzas, burgers, salads, and other entrees. I wanted to try something that was in the wood fired oven so I tried the fire roasted kitchari with chicken and loved it! Never heard of this dish before but it was delicious! Great flavors and cooked perfectly in the oven. Would definitely come if in town!

Oh my Lordy lord!! This place was soooooo amazingly good!!! (Besides the Maple lemonade) the service was Devine. When I was eating my burger I was also looking longingly into the mountains wondering what comes next for me in the adventure of life..alas this was definitely a highlight of my trip. 100 percent recommend.

We got the kale ceasar (AMAZING, one of the best salads Ive ever had - it was so fresh, perfect amount of crunch, huge plate of healthy kale seasoned perfectly, vegetarian Cesar dressing), the nachos (interesting, had maple flavor but lacking topping distribution and cheese overa), and the margarita pizza (delicious 10/10). Highly recommend making a reservation, we waited over an hour, but it was definitely worth it. Wide selection of draft and canned beers and ciders.

Duck fat fries and buffalo chicken Mac n cheese

Stopped in here for a late lunch after a day on the slopes yesterday! We started with 2 IPAs from local VT breweries which were great. To eat we ordered the duck fat fries and the buffalo chicken Mac n cheese, which were both incredible! The service was great, and I loved the vibe of this place. Next time I'm in the area, I will need to try their wood fired pizza!

Good drinks, good food, good service. The menu has a wide variety that served our entire group. I got the margarita pizza but the meatloaf was unbelievable. The meatloaf had an intense flavor that was notable amongst our table. Must go when visiting Stowe!

Best meal we had during our Vermont trip. The server recommended the salmon,so we got the salmon tacos (decent but a bit spicy) and the salmon burger with goat cheese added, which was delicious! Like seriously, not sure what was in that salmon, but their salmon and goat cheese combo on a burger was epic. We tried the pizza too, which was wood fired and quite good. And because we loved the food so much, we tried the giant baked cookie for dessert, which definitely exceeded any semblance of calorie control, but was delicious (and enormous). Place was packed on a May weekday evening but we got seats straightaway, and our server (April was her name i think) was very attentive and helpful. Plenty of seating and nice ambience. If we are in Stowe again, we'll visit again (and get some more of that salmon!).

Are we able to call or join the waitlist on yelp?

No, you have to go into the restaurant.

Do you have outdoor dining?

There is an outdoor terrace, but they weren't using it when we were there, possibly because the evening was a bit chilly.

How do I join the waitlist?

We did not succeed in joining the wait list either. I don't think it's working. Until we actually went to the restaurant and got on the list, we did not have access to wait times or anything.

Are there dog friendly outdoor seating areas?

Unfortunately, this was no longer on the menu but we thought we'd give something else a try...starting with French fries (these were good). Then we shared the carnitas sandwich and delicata squash. Both of these items have a lot of potential, but the chef missed the mark. The carnitas sandwich was 95% fat and we couldn't eat it. When we let the waitress know (not expecting anything other than providing feedback), she seemed annoyed but proceeded to provide a discount to accommodate us. Shifting to the squash...it's spicy. We are certain cayenne was used, even though the menu list pomegranate molasses...the skins weren't removed and overall just wasn't something we'd recommend. We left most of the bowl behind. Anyways. The menu does appear like it has potential just needed more TLC when making the food. We appreciate the wait staff trying to make up for the negative experience with the food, but also would appreciate the attentiveness from the waitress. They did seem short staffed, so she may have been stressed out but when a customer provided feedback...maybe take it more graciously? Overall, this feels like typical resort food. So if your into that type of food, enjoy!

It's been a couple years since I visited town for one night before a bachelor party weekend at a farmhouse elsewhere in Vermont and was very pleased to find that the affordable hotel next door had a divey karaoke bar right behind it. All of the locals were friendly and fun to drink and sing along to their songs. While I did not try the food, I assume it would be just as excellent as the atmosphere, community, and the rather large selection of beer and liquor behind the bar. The owners are definitely doing their best to keep Vermont weird in the best of ways.

On paper, the concept of Alfie's is spectacular. An automotive shop masquerading as a watering…read morehole. For a dyed-in-the-wool car enthusiast who happily spends weekends wrestling with a stubborn transmission, this should be absolute nirvana. It has all the makings of the coolest venue in Stowe. Sadly, the execution is a tragic misfire. The primary reason for this failure is the owner, Chris, whose approach to hospitality borders on outright hostility. Our evening began innocently enough. I arrived with a group of ten friends, mostly local Vermonters in our late twenties and early thirties. My fiancée is thirty-three but routinely gets carded for looking younger. It is a perfectly normal procedure. She handed over her legitimate Vermont ID, it was scanned, and we proceeded to order. Then came our twenty-five-year-old friend, visiting from California. Upon inspecting his out-of-state license, Chris abruptly decided the ID was a forgery. Without a shred of preamble, he confiscated the card and unleashed a barrage of expletives, loudly demanding that our entire group leave the premises immediately. At first, we assumed he was joking. When it became clear he was entirely serious, we politely pointed out that our friend had a flight home the next day and strictly required his identification to travel. Chris responded by threatening to call the police. We actively encouraged this, calmly suggesting that law enforcement could easily verify the license and resolve the misunderstanding. Faced with a group of composed patrons actively inviting police verification, the owner seemed to short-circuit. He threw the license at us and continued to shout. As a bizarre parting shot, when one of my friends calmly asked for an explanation, Chris pointed at my fiancée and aggressively voiced his disbelief that she could possibly be thirty-three years old. Alfie's possesses the raw architectural potential to be a brilliant, vibrant space. Yet, if you walk past, you will notice it is often inexplicably dead. After suffering through this particular brand of toxic behavior, the mystery of its chronic emptiness is entirely solved. If you find yourself in Stowe, you would do well to keep your foot down and drive straight past it.

We were lucky to snag an intimate booth right by the fire. Our server greeted us immediately and was very friendly and knowledgeable about the local beer choices, which made me happy. For dinner, we opted for the chicken marsala, the lamb, and cheeseburgers for the kids. While the burgers were on the pricier side at thirty dollars each, they were generous portions that the kids really enjoyed. The food was generally tasty, though I felt the marsala sauce was a bit too thick, resembling a gravy rather than a traditional marsala sauce. We also felt the plate presentation could use some refinement, as there was quite a bit of empty space on the plates that left us wanting a bit more. Despite those small notes, we had a wonderful time and would definitely recommend this spot for a cozy dinner in Stowe.

Con - none of the 4 of us even liked our meals - they were inedible. We descended the narrow steep staircase into the dark dining room; outdoor seating was not open. The waitress promptly brought us menus and waters. There was a good variety of wines and we settled on the Sancerre. Charging for bread is not a good trend so $10 for 4 Parker House Rolls was disappointing. We also ordered the mussels and asiago fries. The chef seems to favor creamy white wine sauces - the added cream adds a heavy taste without adding flavor. The shrimp & sausage on mushroom ravioli had the cream sauce and cubes of sausage. The pasta primavera also had the cream sauce. It was super bland. We added chicken (see the photo of the chicken breast added to the top side of the dish not cooked in the dish). The salmon and its corresponding carrots were spiced with bebere which is very mild but not particularly enjoyable. And finally, the grilled rib-eye was bad, really bad. It was gelatinous and the worst steak we've ever had. I've only ever seen a steak cooked like this when it's cooked at too low a heat. We fed the leftover steak, chicken, and salmon to the dog.
