This place has the coolest looking inside of any restaurant I've been in in a while. Obviously British pup style, but they went above and beyond with plenty funny portraits. Our waitress was great helped with our recommendations. I had heard this place was overrated, but that was not my experience. We started with a scotch egg, which I'm a huge fan of and am picky. This didn't disappoint. Had that little horseradish zing in the sauce, cooked well, and nice and crispy outside. Mains we split the fish and chips and steak Guinness pie. Loved the peas, the fish was so crispy on the outside and soft on the inside. we saw this restaurant online and noticed they served fish and chips so decided to check it out, the place was a bit small but comfortable and overall service was good. the food was a mix with some good and some average items. we ordered the leek soup to start with and that was good; the shrimp and rice was alright with lots of curry flavor. the fish and chips were average with the fish decent but the chips disappointing. we also got dessert which sticky toffee and it was alright but not really sticky overall great service and comfortable atmosphere with a mixed bag for the food read more

We made a reservation after hearing how crowded it was when they first opened, but it was pretty empty for a Saturday lunch. I got a G & T Turbo to start and the server was confused about whether or not the gin was juniper forward. Food wise we started with the scotch egg and it was delicious. The sauce under the egg halves was the perfect pairing. We decided to split the fish and chips special and the steak and Guinness pie. The fish was cooked perfectly and I loved their tartar sauce. I skipped the mushy peas since I don't eat peas and the other side was fries which were quite salty. The steak and Guinness pie was good but it was salty as well. The decorations inside are quirky and they have some indoor heaters for when it's cold. I enjoyed seeing all of the fun paintings they had on the walls. read more

The Bell is a British style pub type environment. The inside area here is a tiny space while they do have a nice outdoor patio area. They have also added a cool looking oyster bar on the patio but it wasn't open during my visit. Service was VERY slow here and the food menu is VERY concise. My dining companion got the Fish & Chips which was a great portion size and a good meal. I unfortunately got the Fishmonger's Pie which was a riff on a Shepherds Pie which had shrimp, mashed potatoes, peas, carrots, parsnips and cheddar cheese. I don't think I had even half of a shrimp in this dish and it was extremely overpriced for having just a few tiny bits of shrimp in it. My overall impression for my first visit is that this place has generally expensive and overpriced beer and cocktails while the food is all over the place for the portion sizes. I really like the idea but I don't like the execution so far. I've been to actual British pubs in Britain and been to nice British pubs around the USA and this one just is not anywhere near the top of my list of food experiences. read more

I rarely write reviews of any sort but felt compelled to write about the excellent broiled oysters from this lovely pub. As oysters are my favorite seafood, I've eaten my fare share prepared in a myriad of ways. I found my new favorite. The oysters shined in shallot butter, and the light touch of English smoked cheddar rounded out the flavors. Perfection in simplicity. Half dozen per order. Visited here one night for dinner with some friends. Very cute and quaint inside. I think it was a tad bit too dark but I guess that's an English pub vibe? I ordered the endive salad and the fish sandwich with fries. The salad was delicious but overpriced for the portion size. My friend and I split it but it's definitely a serving for 1. The fish sandwich was really good. The fries were crispy and the aoli was fantastic! There is street parking in the surrounding area, and I would suggest making a reservation. We had a Wednesday night reservation and the restaurant appears to be always hopping. Our server Sarah was friendly and did a great job of anticipating our need for water and cocktail refills. Our group ordered a lot of food so we could try everything! The yellowtail crudo app was light and fresh, hush puppies were flavorful and came out piping hot. The smoked trout dip was rich and salty and fishy in a good way. The fish sandwich was generous in size and everything was hot and crispy. The fishmonger pie was my top choice of the evening - so hot with creamy potatoes and lots of assorted seafood bits. Here's the low points- the cauliflower salad was not a salad as it had no greens, just a large slab of cauliflower with sauce and bits of pickled fennel (which I couldn't taste). This needs to be totally reworked where the cauliflower is cut up into fork sized pieces and the fennel should be fresh shaved and generously applied and it should under apps not salads. The Siam salad was equally problematic. Labeled as a Napa cabbage dish, my salad came with 90% shredded purple cabbage and 10% shredded Napa cabbage. It was a travesty and I should have sent it back. The food is about what you'd expect for an English pub, fine not great. But what wasn't fine -- the nickel & diming via a 3% "tech fee" surcharge (was not a credit card fee), and the overall spend due to line item prices. $14 for Negronis? Sheesh this isn't a craft cocktail bar. $21 for half a dozen oysters, $18 for a salad, $13 for the scotch egg, etc. These are high-end prices for pub-fare. The new "tech fee" was the last straw -- the manager explained their out-of-state owners leverage this on all their restaurant properties to pay for their point-of-sale system. This is a scam of course, because a business' equipment costs are part of their overhead -- you build that into your (already quite high) prices. Won't be back. read more

Last night, I visited The Bell in Mid City, and I was really impressed by the atmosphere and overall vibe--it was fantastic. I ordered the snapper crudo, the steelhead dip with fried saltines, and the fish and chips. Each dish was excellent. Their fries, in particular, are some of the best in the city. My only complaint--and this might be more of a general observation about the direction the restaurant industry is heading--is the price. The fish and chips were $26, which feels a bit steep. I'm not sure why it needs to be that expensive. That being said, everything was very delicious. read more

I love the Bell. My boyfriend and I have been a few times now. When it first opened it was difficult to get in but we've been able to walk in since. The atmosphere is cozy inside, it's perfect for winter nights. My boyfriend always gets the Guinness which is on tap but I've like the cocktails I've tried there. All the food is really good too. My favorite has been the celery salad because it's just really unique. Although the fish sandwich is delicious too. I also love the fishmongers pie! Worth checking out! read more

Made reservations with son #2 and Jen L. . Glad we did as the place was packed at 7:30pm. It's the new kid on the block, so I get it. A group of 4 were just chatting away and completely blocked the entrance, if I was seated at the table closest to the entrance, I would be annoyed. We were seated quickly in the side room, great English pub type vibes and really fun art. While the atmosphere is very English looking the menu is not. We started with the Crudité, the smoked trout dip & crackers and the fried mussels. I really enjoyed the onion dip served with the crudité, but the veggies were odd and some undistinguishable, maybe fennel? I was surprised not to see a cheese plate or pickle plate. I ordered a Guinness, it was served in a fancy Guinness glass. Next we had the Siam salad and the Endive salads, I ate the Endive which arrived chopped with stilton and apples, a great combination. My son and I both had the fish sandwich with fries. We also ordered the peas. The bun was very soft with slaw and a sizable piece of fish. I added malt vinegar to my fries, fish and the peas and really enjoyed all of it. They served a vinegar aioli as well, but I personally preferred just using regular malt vinegar. These were probably the closest to traditional pub food on the menu. No dessert offered, we were just offered the bill. After we inquired we were told their soft ice cream machine would be up and running shortly. It was really noisy, the people behind us were shouting so loud, we could barely hear each other at our own table. After they left it was a way better atmosphere. First the good - fries with malt aioli are a winner as are the half pints of Guinness and the oysters. Endive salad is yummy too. Cloth napkins! Decor is good if a bit sparse (compared to other "British type establishments") Disappointing- no whisky (Dewars only). This will prevent me from returning. Had an excellent afternoon dining experience. The restaurant has patio and inside seating. The inside seating has a pub side with bar seating available or the dining room. We took the pub. We started with hushpuppies that were a cut above what you think of, smoked trout dip and the crackers were soooo buttery I would have been happy with just those but perfect vehicle for the mild (not fishy) but flavorful trout dip and crudo which was light and fresh perfect for a New Orleans day. Lunch was fish sandwich served with French fries. The sandwich was a good sized piece of fish fried to perfection with malt vinegar aioli. The fries were fantastic as well. We ordered the side of peas.... Wish they were mashed ... but they were delicious anyways. Dessert was toffee pudding and a perfect end with complimentary flavors but definitely serves two. So about the service... when we arrived we had a reservation, we were greeted outside by name even though we'd never been there before. Our server was attentive and thoughtful. We never had to ask for anything. She knew the menu well and made sound recommendations. The menu has something for every dietary restriction-I'm a pescatarian and had multiple options. Will go back. Ambiance is lovely and service was friendly and efficient. The food, however was very mediocre. I had the celery and arugula salad. Nothing special - I could have made it from my pantry in five minutes. It baffles me why they don't serve at least a roll with my salad. My partner had the oysters - not quite raw but not char grilled. Just sort of hot with cheese. Cheese seems to be the unifying element in almost every dish. My main course was the fishmongers stew. It was very bland. Under a layer of melted cheese were a lot of mashed potatoes. The seafood was overwhelmed. The texture was baby food like. Now, we lived in London and have had good shepherds pie but this was just a boring dish. The steak frites was cooked perfectly and the fries were hot and crisp but, again, a tiny steak. The Bell, you have potential to become a neighborhood darling bit you can't do it in this city on atmosphere alone. You need to really up your food game. I would really like to see this place thrive but with the current state of the food maybe not. Steak and fries were great. The trout dip felt like the whole thing has just been taken out of the fridge with underwhelming fried saltines. The dip was tasty enough. The broiled oysters need to decide if they are raw or broiled because the lukewarm half cooked was not hitting right. I understand that the establishment is new but our server could have been a bit more knowledgeable. When asked if we could have pepper the response was "possibly?" and no knowledge of whether the bar had OJ or not. We enjoyed trying a new place in our neighborhood and were excited for this place to open. We are hoping it adjusts to the neighborhood as time goes on. Confused why the fish sandwich bun is so much bigger than the actual piece of fish on the bun. So much bun and so little fish. It's geared as an adult establishment so also confused why soft serve ice cream is the upcoming dessert. Seems underwhelming. Why not sticky toffee pudding? Menu needs work. Why serve a chicken thigh as an entree when so few other real entrees are offered? Fish mongers pie seems like it needs something else on the side like cornbread and a vegetable. We realize they're just getting started but menu needs other entrees and possibly a burger option. So many other restaurants close by that serve the area. Hope this place understands expectations for New Orleans diners and adjusts as time goes on. read more

Steak and chips was just ok, yet laughably small, maybe 4 ounces of steak already sliced for 30 something bucks. Frozen gin and tonic is served in a small rocks glass, also about 4oz. I'd be shocked if this place stays open very long. The dining room is cute but not very comfortable. Very small tables and chairs jammed close together. Spent all their money on the vibes which were cool but the food was mid at best. The customer service was absolutely wonderful. Everything was just greasy, and I felt like there should've been more variety in options based on the price point. We got the steak with frites and the fish sandwich. The steak was incredibly small, not well cooked, and wasn't even cut against the grain. Very rubbery. The fish sandwich I felt like I could get anywhere and for cheaper somewhere else. We also got the saltines for the appetizer and again just greasy, and the whitefish dip pretty much only tastes like chives.
