The Belfry has been the focus of my shopping trips far less often since they got rid of free parking and started charging. You even have to pay £1 on Sundays now, which is crazy. I surely can't be alone in thinking it would be great for business if they stopped trying to make money off motorists and again allowed us to visit the shops for free. The centre itself is split over two quite contrasting levels. The ground floor is mostly stable, with the majority of big chain stores locating themselves there, many of which haven't changed for years. Upstairs, however, is a different story, with smaller shop units, many of them regularly changing hands and these days there are even usually several that are temporary or unoccupied. The fact that the two levels officially have different names, as if they're separate places (High Street Shopping Centre and Station Road Shopping Centre) is almost reflected in reality! I have no idea how the C&G survives, their opening hours are short, they don't let anyone in without ringing the doorbell and it's owned by LloydsTSB (which is represented by two branches outside The Belfry) anyway. I'm always somewhat surprised whenever I go past and notice that it's still there, even moreso when it's actually open! Despite any faults, The Belfry is undoubtedly a valuable asset for Redhill. There's a good sized M&S here as well as a modest New Look and many other places to buy bits and pieces. You couldn't rely on The Belfry for all your shopping, but as a local place within easy reach, it's handy to pop into when you need to get something or other. The walkways between shops are unexciting but functional and pleasant enough. They're becoming a little cluttered with Sky salesman, massage chairs and tat stalls. Most similar shopping malls seem to suffer in much the same way these days. I think they should build a bridge across from an unused unit on the upper level through to the new Asda; that would be pretty cool, surely help to bring more shoppers upstairs and avoid pedestrians having to fight with traffic on Cromwell Road! read more
