This is a great little stop in the middle of nowhere. The service was fast and friendly. Our server was the only one working and he kept a smile on his face and kind words the whole time even though he was very busy. We tried a variety of items. Our faves were the buffalo chicken wings and steak bites with an interesting and tasty cocktail type sauce. We asked for our burger to be medium rare which was met with the response they would try but truly don't expect it. Well, he was right. Just take it like it comes. Consider yourself lucky there's even a place like this out there. The fries had a coating on them that we don't prefer, but it seems to be getting more popular. The ham and cheese was our least favorite. The flavor of the ham wasn't to our liking. The ambience was def worth it. Overall, a nice and relaxing stop. read more

This review is a really hard one to write, where do I even start.... And keep in mind, I sell food to restaurant for a living on the Oregon coast and I am very knowledgeable about the ins and outs of the restaurant industry. First off, if you look at the location of this establishment... they are REMOTE. They are so far out into the Idaho backcountry! It's just simply amazing that a place like this even exists this day and age. We rented snowmobiles in McCall and road them on the trail all the way to this place. We made this trip in -20 degree temps, and to say it was worth it is an absolute understatement. The service was outstanding! I really wish I could remember the name of our waitress, but I am HORRIBLE at remembering names. Luckily this town has a population of 8 people... So I am hopeful that she will get credit for this experience. We spent an entire week in the Cascade and McCall Idaho area and ate out at MANY restaurants. The sad thing about that is that the best food we had the entire trip was at the Baum Shelter! A little restaurant in the middle of no where can provide better service and better food than the places in Cascade and McCall?!? And they don't even have running water in the winter! All the other places we ate at should be ashamed of themselves. We ate at Grandmas and Reo's pizza in Cascade, and we ate at Lardos and McCall Brewing in McCall. These restaurants get food delivered right to their back door from places like Sysco or US foods. And on top of that, they have a bigger population available to staff their establishment and more selection to hire well qualified people. How is it that a place like the Baum Shelter can have better food, better service and better ambiance than a place in town!? For crap sake, the Baum Shelter has to ride a snowmobile 30 miles each way to McCall in the winter, once a week to get food for the restaurant. That's INSANE. We started off with Jalapeno poppers and mushroom soup. The poppers were fresh, hot and delicious. They were hand made poppers and they were not breaded and fried like most other places. These jalapenos were filled with cream cheese and wrapped in bacon, and they do not disappoint. The Hungarian mushroom soup was outstanding, and believe me... this was not soup from a can. This was house made from scratch and had a depth of flavor and quality. We then had a burger and chicken strips. The burger was awesome! Good quality patty, good quality cheese, good hearty ciabatta bun and cooked to perfection! And a house made BBQ Sauce, which was to die for. And as the chicken strips, they are probably the best chicken strips I've had at a place. When we ordered them, I just assumed they would be some pre made Tyson product that is pre breaded and just deep fried... but NO! These were hand breaded and cooked perfectly. They do a unique cornmeal style breading on the chicken strips that I have not seen since I lived in South Carolina. And they were not dry either, which was awesome. Even served with HOUSE MADE ranch, which was way better than the crap in a bottle. Hands down a totally fantastic visit at this place and we look forward to returning soon! Absolutely without a doubt in my mind 10/10 would 100% recommend this establishment. read more

Oh my goodness! Worth the drive out from McCall! Our family of 15 had zero complaints and loved everything. Burgers, fries, fish and chips, finger steaks, you name it we loved it. Service was friendly and fast and we wanted to adopt the cook because she knows what he's doing for sure! read more

This is an Amazing Restaurant that serves great food year round on the trail from McCall. They also have an assortment of drinks from soft drinks to beer and wine and also offer cabins for rent. We have rented a few times and have been very pleased every time. Summer and now winter time. Check out their Facebook page for fun events during the year!!! Highly recommend it. To say it is remote is an understatement. If you live or are camping nearby, I'm sure you know about it already. But if you're looking for a nice day drive from McCall, ID with a fabulous meal at the end, this is the place. Warren has a rich and varied history (check it out on Wikipedia), and a lot of historic buildings remain. Given the location we were expecting a limited menu of home cooked specialties. The Baum Shelter is much more than that. The menu is nearly as expansive as the surrounding views. We were there at lunchtime and ordered basic lunchtime fare, though there are more elaborate choices available. The Buffalo Wings were by far the best I have ever eaten; not the spiciest, but certainly the meatiest. The sauce was perfectly balanced, with chunks or garlic all over, and cooked to perfection. The proprietor confessed to me that she is a "wing snob" which is why she starts with the best chicken and attends to every detail. My husband had the fish and chips and was likewise delighted.
