We enjoyed a two hour leisurely breakfast while making new friends with the other guests. And sure could have downed our breakfast and been out of there in 15 minutes, but this is one of those hunting lodges that just makes you want to kick back and stay a while. The lodge was built by the current owner, who ran a custom home business, and the grand lodge design was really well thought out, the rooms were really spacious, and we loved how the rooms above wrapped around the big open style living room. This retreat is situated above the river in a truly picturesque high desert landscape.

Much of this grand house is available to guests--a large living room with music and fireplace and a dining room with tea, fridge, and microwave available all the time. Our room had a view of snow covered mountains, a river and chicken yard below. We could walk anywhere downtown from Belle Pepper's, and felt comfortable to let ourselves in when we wanted to. The breakfast was delicious and just enough. Owners, John and Pepper, chatted with us and John ate with us. It was enjoyable to find out their story and to learn the history of the mansion and of the town of Joseph from John.

The Elkhorn B&B has, if anything, gotten even better since my last visit. Debra, the…read moreowner/innkeeper, has expanded her flock of goats and now is mastering the art of goat cheese and milk-making, selling her creative chevre combinations at local farmers' markets and offering advice to would-be artisan farmers (or wannabes) along with her signature ranch house breakfasts (think fresh eggs, hash browns, melon, sausage, and excellent dark rich coffee). She's also a fountain of knowledge and great conversationalist, and her elegant ranch home quickly feels familiar within the first few minutes of arrival (once you open the gate and bounce along the gravel driveway to the barnside parking). This time, I decided to get creative and took a sunrise hike before breakfast to the summit of nearby Council Mountain (8126 ft.) in the Payette National Forest. Admittedly, it was a bit of an adventure, with fallen Ponderosa pines (the good Samaritans have chainsaws in their trucks up here), black bear cubs, a great grey owl, kestrels, and a herd of free-ranging cattle, and I didn't get back until 11:30 am, so my breakfast was an early lunch. But the chance to see the mountains from an exquisitely rugged vantage point made the 12-mile morning trek worth the effort. The food and company that Debra provided after were most welcome. You don't actually need to do a hike like that to have a good stay at the Elkhorn (or bring along French wine to drink on the patio while watching the lightning and rains come in at night). You could just hang out for a while and soak in the hip ranchhouse atmosphere while goats, horses, sheep, mules, chickens, dogs, and other creatures wander about. It's definitely a pioneering sort of place - a 21st century version of a Western American classic, with WiFi and goat cheese included.

The smell in the air of the pine and forest are worth every penny. Each room has a private deck with table and chairs overlooking the forest behind the lodge. Inside the main lodge is beautiful and clean, with a pool table and games upstairs. They also have cabins for rent and an entire house for larger groups. The cost is better than the hotels in town, and for the privacy and quiet, this is the only experience worth paying for. But if you need something, town is only a couple minutes drive. My sweety and I spent our evenings during by the pond, listening to the fountain and looking at the stars. The people here have been incredibly polite, friendly, and as helpful as you could ask for. I understand that ownership has changed hands in recent months, so don't give any heed or negative reviews. These people are not the same. Fantastic place! We HIGHLY recommend staying here. Nestled into the mountainside away from almost everything it sits peacefully. As I sit in the hammock chair on the giant covered deck sipping my morning coffee here is the picture I can paint for you. They have a couple friendly dogs who nestle at your feet as the breeze moves through the trees. The water irrigation can be heard over on one side of the yard while the chickens are talking to each other over on the other side of the property. I have a full belly from a healthy breakfast. Fresh eggs from the chickens with bacon and some fresh picked apricots and bagel. The owners are so friendly, they will happily get you anything you need.They work non stop to the entire place looking great inside and out. Our room is one of the two available. It is separate from the main house and below the covered deck. We have our own two queen beds, bathroom, coffee, Tv, and fridge. There is even other chairs and coffee table. However the place to be is on the covered porch. The sun comes up over the mountain and warms me as I breathe in the fresh mountain air. We already snuck off early this morning for a little fishing. I love how relaxed I am here. It sounds like they are steadily booked. Plan ahead to get in here, cause it's worth it.

Conveniently located, close to town, trails, etc.-The bungalow was perfectly suited for us- offering beauty, privacy, friendliness, generosity, comfort, peace, quiet, just to name a few things! You absolutely cannot beat the view out the front door and porch and everything you could possibly need for your stay is provided with a sincere commitment to quality. Ideal for a couple or single travelers with or without a dog. If you enjoy the company of animals, there are horses on the premises to visit with too. The kitchen is open to guests which I found amazing. When I arrived I was hungry but not for a full meal so I toasted a bagel and sat outside on the porch to eat it and listen to the birds. One caveat about the Rooster Room is the shower. You need to get the shower curtain arranged before you take a shower to avoid water on the floor. Otherwise, it was a great stay and the breakfast was wonderful, as well. It's definitely not your ordinary lodging.
