The rooms were straight out of a romantic and cozy place and time, even though newly remodeled this treasure truly felt alive with history. Over breakfast I found myself daydreaming about getting married to my husband all over again and having the wedding in this classic overnight country hotel. The grounds were very well kept, complete with a beautiful pond, historic barn, and a deer grazing in the field out the window as we ate are breakfast at the huge ol' farm table. Or hostess was also super accommodating with a special gluten free, paleo breakfast for me. I look forward to staying here again, and sinking back into that chair on the wrap around porch as the sun gets ready to set, and the wildflowers sway in the mountain breeze.

I was refused accommodations because I showed up on a motorcycle. Blatant and illegal discrimination! While I was being denied lodging, the clerk checked in two "good old boys" who had green teeth and showed up in a beat up pickup truck with rifles in the back window.... I'm guessing they were hunters.. apparently armed dirtbags are much more to their liking. Lest readers be misled, I am hardly the "outlaw Biker" type. I am a Grandfather, professionally employed and college educated. Now if I was a homosexual I could have sic'd BOLI and the State of Oregon on these people but it's still apparently just fine to discriminate against some "classes" pf people if you don't happen to like their mode of transportation. Bikers beware! Motels are few and far between in Eastern Oregon. Make sure you have lodging arrangements locked in before you head out that way.

Debra, the…read moreowner/innkeeper, has expanded her flock of goats and now is mastering the art of goat cheese and milk-making, selling her creative chevre combinations at local farmers' markets and offering advice to would-be artisan farmers (or wannabes) along with her signature ranch house breakfasts (think fresh eggs, hash browns, melon, sausage, and excellent dark rich coffee). She's also a fountain of knowledge and great conversationalist, and her elegant ranch home quickly feels familiar within the first few minutes of arrival (once you open the gate and bounce along the gravel driveway to the barnside parking). This time, I decided to get creative and took a sunrise hike before breakfast to the summit of nearby Council Mountain (8126 ft.) in the Payette National Forest. Admittedly, it was a bit of an adventure, with fallen Ponderosa pines (the good Samaritans have chainsaws in their trucks up here), black bear cubs, a great grey owl, kestrels, and a herd of free-ranging cattle, and I didn't get back until 11:30 am, so my breakfast was an early lunch. But the chance to see the mountains from an exquisitely rugged vantage point made the 12-mile morning trek worth the effort. The food and company that Debra provided after were most welcome. You don't actually need to do a hike like that to have a good stay at the Elkhorn (or bring along French wine to drink on the patio while watching the lightning and rains come in at night). You could just hang out for a while and soak in the hip ranchhouse atmosphere while goats, horses, sheep, mules, chickens, dogs, and other creatures wander about. It's definitely a pioneering sort of place - a 21st century version of a Western American classic, with WiFi and goat cheese included.

The lodge is historic and there is a lot of cool history. There are a lot of cool pictures off the lodge I days past hanging on the walls which gives it a "Shining" ambiance. Getting in the tubs first thing in the morning and watching the steam come off the lake while soaking and relaxing is a wonderful start to the day. Overall I highly recommend the experience.

I went back prior to covid with my mom and we had a great time when it was renovated and turned into a hotel/museum for people to visit during the day. We spent two days there and had so much fun with the authentic antique feeling the place had. Now, fast forward to 2026, I was on a road trip from LA to visit a friend in Idaho and I thought I'd stop by. Sadly, this place now has turned into a full fledged mini resort and it looks like they are trying to coverup its past with every turn. I barely recognized the inside and any mention of the word "Haunted" is utter blasphemy. I asked the bartender about it, thinking she gets asked that all the time, and she read me the riot act. As, I back pedaled out of the bar area, I realized this place is not at all what it used to be and it was time to leave. As I left, I let the front desk know that I have told hundreds of people about this place but, this was the last time. A few of the employees were nice, the grounds are kept, and outside of a few smells it's not too bad on the outside. Inside, save your money (rooms are expensive), they think they banished all of the ghosts, and the female bartender is now the scariest part about the place. Rooms were great, the owner is a little Korean lady that makes the stay special, and it is only a couple of minutes to walk either way to a convenience store or a restaurant at the truck stop. Much more personal and pleasant than the strictly commercial places in Baker or LaGrande. I suggest you step back in time for an evening.

This place is both peaceful and fun. Enjoy some reading time on the ample patio. Walk wherever you need to go or job the local trail along the Powder River as I did. This was a great alternative to hotel living while I worked a couple of weeks in the area. Terry and Jeanne were flexible on my timing and the rate and were fantastic to work with. I moved my coworker into the Upper Suite within days as all my coworkers were super jealous.

This place, in contrast has made lemonaid out of lemons so to speak. The room was great, as always. The staff was great, as always. They no longer have a breakfast buffet.... most motels have stopped offering it while not reducing their room rates. The Eagle's view came up with an interesting solution. You fill out a menu of what you want in the morning and when you'll show up and hot coffee and all the goodies you ordered are waiting when you get there. Being a big eater I was concerned that the portions would be skimpy. But the gal working the b'fast really heaped on the food. It was great! This motel has always been the best lodging in town (by far). Always stay here when we're in town.

After three days, no communication from the owner(s). Called and emailed the owner(s) on 2/28/2022. Left a voicemail and an email message, asking them to contact me and expressing my desire to make a reservation. It is now 3/5/2022 and still no reply to my emails or phone call. We really wanted to stay here but, the owners are obviously inattentive. Not good.

We checked in late at night and the process couldn't have been any easier. There was coffee and a coffee pot in the room which was a great bonus not to have to buy any in town. There is a Safeway around 6 miles away that we did get some items to heat up and have in the condo. Seating was ample for our family. We would have liked bigger beds for our teenage boys but we made it work fine. The surrounding area is lovely and a few miles away is beautiful Wallowa Lake State Park which we stopped at on our way out of town. We would stay here again.
