The early dinner my wife & I tried to enjoy was quite mediocre. Sunday evening. The place is almost…read moreempty, one other couple having drinks only. My get out of here alarm did not sound because 100's of TripAdvisor reviews proclaim that the food is well made & tasty. NOT TRUE. Duck salad: burnt meat. Way over sauced, a literal pool of miso dressing in the bowl. Beef carpaccio: meat okay. Grated Parmesan cheese, too unctuous on top ruined the delicacy of the thin beef slices. Duck confit: terrible. Not confit but stewed sometime in the remote past, frozen then microwave re-warmed for service. I saw into the open kitchen. The microwave was getting plenty of use. Chicken with creamy sauce: acceptable. By no means high cuisine. Ate it because I was hungry, did not savor it. Honey cake with caramel: again warmed in microwave. Which made the cake gummy. Service: hit & miss. One engaged, happy & helpful server. Other one was sullen, perfunctory and really needs to acquire employment elsewhere. She might be happier working in a job that required no contact with customers. £23 for a bottle of Chilean Merlot that sells in supermarket for £7.68 Total tariff: £53 after removing the duck confit disaster. Go elsewhere.

I love the decor- very mythical fishermen with posters for movies and wanted signs. They have an extensive menu, including alcohol and their cider comes in 500ml bottles. I've been told it's quite expensive in local standards but for the atmosphere it's worth it. I'd like to give a shoutout to one of the chefs. We had shown up here and the hostess had said they were not taking any one without a reservation. But there were open tables. Disappointed, we walked out. Standing in front of the restaurant, trying to figure out what to do, the cook comes out and says they will make room for us. Absolutely the sweetest. We were so stoked to eat at this place again. He even brought out tasty food out to us himself!

The local chippy may have won some awards, but the takeaway vibe isn't so enticing. So when you want a bit more of a dining experience this is a modest cafe style setting that's nicely decorated in the centre of town. We parked in the back streets on a meter. My haddock and chips and Sam's cod and chips were freshly made and really good. Our waitrees gave us friendly service and was attentive. We went in the early evening in early Jan and it was pretty empty.

They have several local ales on tap and some "Real Ale" cask conditioned for a traditional experience. Sadly, there was no roast beef when we arrived so we'll have to wait for the classic Sunday roast. Steak and ale pie, and a butternut squash pie were good substitutes. This is a popular spot, especially for outdoor seating. We sat inside in a cozy dining room but if the weather is dry outdoors is a nice option. Service was a confusing at first, but was just swell once we were seated...the leftside is a side is a traditional sit down restaurant service, the right side is a classic pub style where you order everything at the bar, and the expansive outside patio is self service as well, a completely taken over by smokers and vapers like every other European patio. £20 FISH & CHIPS! The fresh beer battered haddock was thick and crispy on the outside, and moist and tender on the inside, perfection!, The chips were pleasant enough, though crushed minted peas were just okay...maybe because they day prior I had some incredible mushy mint peas at another pub. Still a great plate overall! £20 SHORTCRUST PIES...wife went with the Chicken, Leek, and Herb...wonderfully rich and savory, with flavorful scent and warm, buttery pie crust. Lovely! Also came with seared greens, braised red cabbage, buttery mash potatoes, and rich decadent red wine gravy. £7.5 STICKY TOFFEE PUDDING...gooey, sweet, sticky, buttery, and fantastically wonderful!
