Fresh cut potatoes, golden crispy with a finish of rosemary....Yummm!
Mori N.

What's interesting about this place is that it is so unassuming, modest and minimalistic that you wouldn't expect much by just walking by it. Welll....... That morning's breakfast at this place was one of the best breakfasts I've had in a while. I'll tell you why: First of, the eggs were cooked perfectly.....yes, it is possible to cook eggs the wrong way! I asked for sunny side up and the egg white with the yolk was both cooked to the right temperature proportionately....what that means is that to cook the white part is different than to cook the yolk. The only way you can get that right is either by watching it literally heat up and change its composition or by being an expert and knowing it's exact timing. It was juicy and flavorful. The Italian sausage was crispy on the outside and juicy on the inside and cooked in butter, which you can taste. Yummmm.....and I don't even like sausage that much. The baked beans....well ..they were just baked beans out of a can...but what I loved was that they flavour-paired it with this dish, which went perfectly. I went to town on these beans...and almost chuckled at myself half way throughout my breakfast. Now probably the best part.....the potatoes. They were fresh cut. No. Not yesterday. Not last week stored in the walk-in cooler....fresh cut that morning and you could taste it. Cooked to a perfect golden in butter with a rosemary finish topping. I asked for my bacon to be extra crispy and that's exactly what I got and almost ordered an additional side order of it....that's how much I enjoyed it. The service was casual, friendly and welcoming with a cozy interior. Loved it.

I ordered a Waffle Sandwich for breakfast. Burnt potatoes, burnt waffle, scrambled eggs with no taste at all, tomato: not even a slice, but half of a thin slice, overfried bacon. Perhaps if enough cheese was added, it would have hidden this terrible general taste, but no, it was a drop. I have never had such a tasteless food for breakfast, even the waffle is not tasty. My husband ordered the Avocado & Tomato Benny, it was terrible. Our morning is ruined. I do not recommend these dishes to anyone.

Anyone who accommodates to my partners vegetarian diet with lots of extra avocado gets a 5 star from me :) the chef/cook/owner came out from the back to ask what more he could put in the breakfast sandwich instead of sausage. Thankyou for that ! And I got the Monte Cristo which was very yummy and not greasy. Great filling breakfast in the west end.

Cheese Benny ($10.50) - excellent hollandaise

3.5 STARS Well done Joe on the Cheese Benny ($10.50 tax incl.). Sometimes the hollandaise at diners are a hit and miss and they nailed it. I actually enjoyed my pan fried potatoes this time. They were crispy in some parts and still soft in others and they were not deep fried like some. The melted cheddar just added another layer of goodness to the taste.

Definitely beats out Dennys/White Spots hands down in terms of actual quality, original tasting breakfasts! Highly recommended their corn beef hash, best w/ the sunny side eggs so you'll get extra juice when you mix it; comes w/ choice of toast, buttered to boot. lots & lots of food here, boys n girls, this is good for 2 meals! and just for $9.25! but stay away fr the blueberries/cinnamon french toast; the fruit's fine but the cinnamon may not be the right mix, at least to me. A cozy, small resto of about 12 tables, love the sign that says "seat yourself at a clean table'...duh, right.... helpful staff, 4 servers on, i was impressed... all cards welcome.

This is also where you hang your key when you leave the house so they know who is here. We got the Under the Apple Tree Room which was spacious and nicely decorated. It even had its own private yard. Also has gas fireplace, jacuzzi style tub and stand up shower. The heated bathroom floor was a nice touch. If you get tired of your room you can also enjoy sitting outside on a deck or the living room. We really enjoyed relaxing on the couch back in our room in front of the fire place. Service was good, friendly. The restaurant is the same as I recall, clean enough. A little cramped and the seating isnt too comfortable. Its really not a good place to hang out for a long time, but rather sit down, eat, and get out type of place. I had the lavender latte and the Tagine this time. Ive had it before and at least its pretty consistent. Ive tried several other things on their menu in the past too, all pretty solid 4/5. Nothing standout as so amazing to deserve 5 stars, but consistent and tasty. I did have a reservation which they charge $10/person for, purely for donation to a charity and does not contribute to your meal at all, and also nonrefundable. While I find this somewhat annoying, I dont blame them for doing this from a business standpoint. They always have a lineup so there is no shortage of customers for them. There is no reason they need to deal with the headache of a ton of reservations. On the flip side, they honoured my reservation in a very timely fashion and I bypassed the line, so props to them for doing that part right. If you have to park, then you may find street metered parking or use one of the nearby paid lots.

I chose to sit outside on the patio instead of inside at the bar to take in that Canadian Vitamin D! It was sunny and hot, but the patio had a great view and was perfect for people-watching. My server, Dursh (or something close to that), was really cool. He asked my name, made me feel welcomed, and gave solid recommendations. He even picked my drink for me, which I ended up enjoying. He suggested a Benedict dish, but I'm not a fan of runny eggs. I had already decided on the El Camino poutine and plot twist....it also came with two runny poached eggs. Even so, it was still delicious, mainly because the yolk texture wasn't an issue with the crema on the dish. That poutine was an easy 9/10. It came loaded with cheese curds, pork carnitas that weren't dry at all, bacon, pinto beans, roasted pineapple for a little sweetness, salsa, jalapeños, pickled onions, salsa verde, cilantro crema, and spinach. The herb potatoes were seasoned so well too. All in all, a great last meal in Vancouver from the food to the service (even beyond Dursh, everyone was helpful) to the patio vibe. Great spot.

I was meeting a friend here yesterday who's visiting from California, and when deciding on a meeting place, we realized a bunch of the Gastown coffee roaster places were closed on Sunday, so I mentioned Breka , knowing it was opened 24/7. (LOVE this!). Plus, this site is close to Waterfront Station, and my friend had a busy day planned, taking the Seabus to N.Van and doing a lot of sightseeing. So this Breka was perfect. I was there early at 10 am-ish, and from the outset, I was impressed: exposed brick wall, long counter and display case, fully stocked with the most beautiful pastries and tarts and cakes, and lovely looking sandwiches, too....Just lovely. I ordered a tea from the guy taking the orders. At the check-out, the woman working the cashier was the most unfriendly, aloof person I have ever encountered at a Breka. She was downright dour. Never looked up, never smiled, said I owed X for the tea I ordered, gave me a receipt and said I was "number 3", no "thank you" (despite my saying thanks!), nothing. She looked really unhappy and bothered to be there. (I sat at a nearby table, waiting for my number to be called. I saw her interactions with all the people behind me - and there were quite a few, as it got suddenly busy in the cafe. She was cold and unfriendly to everyone in line as she rang them all up. These are mostly tourists! Why have a dour, borderline-hostile woman at the check-out counter of a busy cafe in a touristy part of our city? I just don't get it). Anyhow, I waited 10 minutes to hear my number called, but I never heard it. I walked up to the take-out area and there was my tea, on a receipt that said "number 3". Did they call out my number? I honestly don't know. I was seated at a table a few feet from the area and listening for my number and I didn't hear it called. I was not impressed with this set-up. Not at all. My friend arrived and got a chocolate concoction which looked amazing, and he loved it, so there's that. I still love Brekas but I probably won't return to this site. Between the cold experience at the cash and the prolonged waiting for my order (a cup of tea!), and not being sure if my order number was ever called, it just all left me with a bitter taste in my mouth.

We were having gorgeous weather in Vancouver so we decided to eat on the covered patio. The place is pretty cozy, but was only moderately busy when we went. They have a pretty good menu with lots a Benedict's and a build your own breakfast option that seemed pretty nice. I took the recommendation from our server and got the bacon benny. It did not disappoint. I think I have recently discovered that I love poached eggs and these were perfect. The yolk was nice and runny and the white was firm but not hard. I like to cut in to my egg and have it run down and get messy on the plate. The hollandaise was excellent. So many breakfast places will serve it broken, but not here. It had the perfect amount of lemon, butter ratio for my taste and I really enjoyed it. The bacon was good, not to salty, and the english muffin was, well, an English muffin from a package that they toasted and out on the plate. I did splurge and paid the extra dollar for the truffle potatoes and they were very good. I love truffle oil on potatoes so I am a sucker for it whenever its on a menu. You just cant mess it up. Fried potatoes, truffle oil, and a lemon squeeze to bring it all together. My wife got the brunch burger and she loved it. It was a messy breakfast burger that a lot of places have but this one was done right. A poached oozy egg, on a burger patty with american cheese, the best burger cheese in my opinion, bacon, hollandaise and arugula on a brioche bun! It came with tater tots and they were nice and crispy just like she likes them. Well, why didn't I give it five stars you may be asking? Great question. Here it is, each plate came with a side that was just awful. Mine had some "fresh" fruit that nearly made me laugh. It consisted of the saddest, limpest piece of watermelon I have ever seen this side of a trash can. I also had an old crusty orange wedge and a single grape. My wife got a slimy side salad that I think was holding on for dear life. Both, we deemed inedible and moved on immediately. I think there is a rule, or at least there should be one, in restaurants that if you wouldn't eat it then don't serve it. There might be another one that says if you eat rotten food maybe get a different job and see rule one. Overall, we liked the place and would go back. We would just avoid the salads and fresh fruit and stick to the food they cook.
