Don't be fooled by the the pictures of the barbers here, they all know how to cut black hair (textured hair), they can give you the exact fade you're looking for--and they're friendly to boot. Megan hooked me up! My haircut at the Barber Joint was a pleasant experience after having visited one of the top "black" spots "Supreme" and and getting the feeling I was a little too alternative for them. (I have never been the Jordan-wearing type, sorry. ) At the Barber Joint , everyone was happy to see me. They also got me an immediate appointment as quick as I could get to Boulder (versus waiting a week for Denver cutters--what's the deal?). Megan listened and collaborated with me throughout the process. I'm pleased to have the proper cut for my vacation. I don't really know where to start as I believe this is my first one star review. Although the women working here are friendly, this is the most unsanitary barber joint I've been to in my life. Adjacent to the hair wash station they leave the used/dirty towels in an open hamper. A cutting station had an open box of cereal and Girl Scout Cookies on it, looking like a college dorm desk. Seriously? I couldn't tell the last time they really cleaned the place outside of sweeping up hair. Furthermore, they are dog friendly (and so am I, I have one myself). But when you allow inside a dog that has just been neutered to pee and throw up everywhere, specifically at my feet and next to the hair washing station, I don't know what to say. I walked out smelling like dog piss. I've never been in a business outside of a vet where they place the comfort of animals above the comfort of clients. Now I can start talking about the cut. It's average, that's all you need to know. You get what you pay for--$25 plus tip. All in all, I don't understand how this place is operational. They have serious sanitary issues. I'll be taking my future business elsewhere. As for people scoping this place, I'd recommend the same. read more

Quick, easy, friendly, good conversation, and in and out in 30 minutes or so. You need a haircut, here's your place. Only thing is I have very curly hair. Told the stylist, "Lose the volume, keep the length." She cut a good two inches off the length. If I had a buck for every time that directive was ignored by a stylist, I'd be rich. I liked them so much that I wasn't mad, though. Hey, it grows back. They are used to fast, fast, fast here. That's all. When I'm in NYC I will pay $60 for the haircut I asked for. But here, it's express service and you get what you pay for. I'd still go back if I needed a clip in a big hurry. I would probably just have to slap the stylist's hand when she tried to lop off hair where I told her not to. read more

Over priced and sub-par. I did not like the atmosphere here. I walked in and it stunk like marijuana. To be fair it is legal but I still do not feel it is professional. They played new rap, and they played it loud(drake,fettywap,etc.), which I did not like either. The haircut itself was just barely acceptable enough that I did pay for it. Any more and I would have not paid. Finally the price was ridiculous for what I got. It was $25 which I feel is way to much. I usually go to another barbershop(check my other reviews) but they were closed on mondays so I went here. I did not give them one star because the people who work there we're all relatively friendly. If you are a college student who doesn't mind over paying then maybe you would like this place. A haircut should be a lot of things, it should feel right on your scalp, should be an expression of your best grooming, should make you look younger, feel younger, and get at least some compliments; add to that, it should be cut to grow out nicely between cuts. Not Your Typical Barber Joint This place is friendly, fun and has an amazing staff. My personal experience from being out of town and trepidatious about someone cutting let alone touching what hair I have left was quenched when the barber (all female by the way) calmed me. Walked in without appt, there were 3 barbers cutting hair and no one else waiting. Took 45 minutes before any of the 3 finished their cuts, then someone with an appt came in and jumped me (and two others that arrived after me) in line. Understandable because we didn't have appointments, but then the second barber finished her cut and had an appointment in ten minutes and said she'd take me if he didn't show. Unacceptable to wait almost an hour for a basic haircut without being warned that appointments were on the way and it would be a long wait. Another customer and myself left after being told we'd have to wait at least ten minutes (and a lot more if the appt showed) for a cut. Unprofessional barber shop and barbers - there is no excuse to allowing a nearly 1 hour wait and not at least providing some warning to walk-ins about upcoming appointments. read more

Moved in from out of town and use to drive an hour away to get a haircut because that's how firm I am about having a great cut. Came here as a walk-in. My barber was Yvette. She did an amazing job! I got a beard trim and a medium skin fade, both were very skillfully done. I used to be in the military and had to get haircuts at least every two weeks. I know a good fade when I see one and Yvette knows how to do a fade for sure. That's the biggest thing I think you can judge a barber on is how good their fades look. Everything else was top notch as well, I'll definitely be going back here regularly for my haircuts. Let me tell you something about being a black man in Boulder. Certain things that you would normally find within your immediate community are lacking up here because of Boulder's....... crunchy granola type vibe. When, I came up here to work my hair hadn't been cut in months because a similar situation. In a mostly white town, it's really tough to find someone you trust to cut black hair without leaving it uneven. So I would just grow a fro and shave it down. Easier than finding someone who could do my hair right or than walking around with some busted ass fade. Then I met Ricky. I came in asking for a high top fade, which he just grinned and turned the chair so.i could sit. I was at ease from the moment I walked through the door. Then he started to methodically work the fade out of the gang of hair I had amassed. It felt like having a sculptor work marble up there. He was smooth, and focused. When he finished he faded the cut into my beard then worked just as hard getting my lining done right from forehead to the bottom of my chin. I left looking better than I think I ever have. When I leave Boulder to go back to college in the Springs, best believe I'll commute up to see Ricky. It's worth it, knowing that he is confident in his ability to make me feel confident. I've since had other friends in similar situations go in and see him and now we are the flyest bunch in town. They even bumped Biggie, Nas, and old Jay Z in the shop which I loved. Either make an appointment or prepare to wait over an hour till someone can cut your hair! When I walked in I was greeted and told to sit down with another person waiting and I was also told that someone​ would be with me shortly. ​​As I waited for about 20 minutes, more people started to come in and some of them said they had appointments. The barbers finished cutting a few people's​ hair​ and then proceeded to take all the people who had appointments next. When they finished cutting some more people's hair, they went completely out of order and decided​ to take someone​ else who had just shown up about 15 minutes prior who didn't even have an appointment. The person waiting in front of me tried to say something​​ but the barber just walked away. After 40 minutes I was up next, but then more people showed up who had appointments and I was quickly back to the end of the line. When they have "walk-ins welcome" outside of their barbershop​, they should​ also have "be prepared to wait over an hour just waiting and then another 45 minutes to have your haircut."Even the people who did have appointments waited on average for about 10-15 minutes before they could get their haircut. After waiting for well over an hour, I couldn't​ wait any longer so I left and went to the barbershop​​ across the street(it was much better). Overall, I would definitely​ not recommend​d this barber shop to anyone. It's extremely disorganized(there's no check-in), understaffed, overpriced and has terrible customer service. Oh, and did I mention that there isn't even someone working at the front desk? I watched as a lady stopped cutting someone's​ hair to go to the cash register, give someone their change and then proceed to keep cutting the person's hair without washing her hands.
