We enjoyed our dinner and experience at Banyan in downtown Frederick. The closest parking is on the street or after 6pm, the US post office has parking available for free. The Banyan has a neat concept, which includes three different floors and three different themes. The first floor is a Speakeasy with fine dining and full bar. The second floor is an event center with live music and band on Fridays and Saturday evenings. Then the third floor is a roof top bar, with more casual dining menu and vibe. We ended up eating at the Speakeasy restaurant, and ordered the crab dip for appetizer. For main entree, we ordered the rib eye with Banyan potato and bernaise sauce, creamed spinach, and asparagus. The cream spinach was excellent and definitely recommended. We loved the vibe and looking forward to coming back and trying other items on the menu. An out-of-town friend visited to take us out for a birthday dinner. We offered up a few choices and he suggested The Banyan from our list because none of us had been there but we'd heard good things. Our evening was, ultimately, a pricey frustration. The atmosphere in the speakeasy was energetic and the menu was interesting. Prices were such that we thought the evening held promise. It seemed odd that two of the three brands of spirits we tried to order were not carried. The server indicated that the "newness" of the liquor license prohibited carrying more than a few brands of any particular spirit. We joked amongst ourselves that perhaps this was part of the speakeasy experience. Our service, an earnest young man, dutifully wrote down our order. When our first course arrived, it was apparent that the food runners did not know which of us ordered which item (disappointing at this price point) and when they placed items on the table they did so haphazardly that we had to center our serving plates. On the positive, the French onion soup was incredibly well balanced. The broth had a very slight sweetness, which contrasted with tang of the cheese. A Caesar salad was allegedly fine but chewy croutons seemed a bit odd. Mains of pork chop "martinis" and a New York strip were nicely done but again, runners had to announce "I have a pork chop!" and we had to raise hands to claim our food. (Such an easy thing to remedy.) The whole experience, however, was somewhat ruined by a very loud table behind me. One of their diners was served a crab dish, which should have gone to another person at the table. Unfortunately, the person who was served the crab dish (and who ate it) was allergic and thus began very loud complaining and discussing of the situation amongst the diners to the point that we could not---even with raised voices--enjoy our own conversation. That table proceeded to complain to staff of increasing authority but their work took at least 20 minutes, during which time we'd have found a quieter dinner on the hotel's construction site out back any day of the week. The diner in question wanted a Benadryl but was calmed with free desserts and a free round of "Key West" drinks for the table. Meanwhile, we were able to order coffee and dessert and just enjoy our own individual reflection because conversation wasn't happening. I did thank one staffer for speaking quietly. That person leaned into me and, gesturing to the loud table, inquired "what's going on there?" That question was a genuine moment of fun. The Banyan? Great French onion soup and steaks/chops but the atmosphere (and their ability to work with it) leave much to be desired. read more

The Banyan is exactly what Frederick has been missing for so long. The interior is absolutely stunning--thoughtfully designed, elevated, and full of incredible vibes from the moment you walk in. It feels fresh, modern, and unlike anything else in the area. The menu is well-curated with a great variety, and the wine and drink selections are especially impressive. It does lean a bit on the higher-end side compared to the typical Frederick scene, but that also adds to its appeal if you're looking for something more upscale. This is definitely going to become one of those go-to, super vibey spots in Frederick--perfect for a night out when you want great atmosphere and a more refined experience. read more

We came for the country line dancing and had a fun time overall. There's a rooftop food truck where you can order food, but we found it to be just okay. The line dancing itself wasn't very beginner-friendly. I was hoping for more instruction and guidance, as it seemed geared toward people who already knew the dances. read more

Rooftop views are nice. Atmosphere is great. The speakeasy is quite the experience. Decor is top notch. Presentation made the entire experience. The General Tsos cauliflower is delicious. The butter tray was fantastic. We ordered the filet and it was cooked to perfection. The side potato's and the sweet potato casserole are outstanding. Recommend the Key. read more

I have been there twice. The ambiance and decor are beautiful. I love the more formal dining area and the casual rooftop bar combo. They were not too busy on my first visit and Alex and Athena provided excellent attention and great recommendations. I enjoyed the bolognese and the old fashioned. They were pretty slammed on my second visit. I think over time the kinks will get worked out and this will be the place to be in Downtown Frederick. read more

To much money for the experience. Not worth your wallet in this economy. Craisins on the charcuterie board and butterfly crackers from the Keebler elves. No utensils or plates served with the apps. Missed an order at our table. Table has not been cleared from apps and there has been no follow ups on drinks. It had been a miserable experience. Do not waste your money until they get their act together. Scallops were served cold and inedible and came back the same. Friend had steak and lobster and the lobster was undercooked, the fix was to burn it. So after speaking to manager Brad and owner Dan still paid for our dismal experience. They mentioned they would look at the 48 cameras and microphones to review our experience, not actually listening to the comments we gave to them directly. It was the worst restaurant experience of my life. Offered free desserts not the correct bandaid for our experience. If in Frederick and you want a great meal go to Massi down the street or Wye Oak. First off, the Banyan's rooftop location may be the best location for dining/drinking in all of Frederick. The entire ambiance is spectacular. It's therefore truly unfortunate that beyond that, everything else is sub-par or worse. The food is mediocre and overpriced. The waitstaff is disgruntled and manic, and there is absolutely no glassware, silverware, or dish ware. Seriously, serving restaurant-priced food and drinks to your patrons with all disposable glasses, plate ware, and utensils, is completely unacceptable and disrespectful to those who are supporting your business. It's pretty obvious that maximizing profits is the sole function of The Banyan's business model. read more

We went to the rooftop. The panoramic views are stunning. The ambience and exterior design is on point. The food was terrible. We ordered the Patrick street walking taco which was sooo expensive and cheap $15. looks like it was from the food truck. They opened a Fritos bag and used it as the base of the dish where the toppings were. Seemed very cheap. Our utensils were all plastic, no glass cups, plastic house party cups. Our server wasn't good and forgot about us. We were the only one at the bar. It's great if you're going for sports and to just mingle. Overall, I would come here for drinks only and for the views. I sat at the rooftop at the bar. The servers were very friendly. The food was a big disappointment for the money I paid. The cheesesteak was not as full as it should be for $18.00. They should call it a grilled cheese because it was all bread with two slices of cheese on top. The orange crush I had was pretty decent. Normally, I take a picture of my food and send it to some of my friends. I did not take a picture, because the food was so bad. A waste of $31.00 plus a tip. I went with my family on Friday night, we were so excited because the ambiance was wonderful, the people at the restaurant were chatty and it all looked great. We ordered a butter tray, which was good - so we were super excited about our entrees. We ordered the sliders, the beet salad and the ~ $60 pork chops with the Gnocchi , everything was bland, there was no taste to the food and all of us had so much left over but couldn't even think of taking it home. Overall the bill came to $180 (too expensive) for such mediocre food. I will not be going to it again unless I hear that it improves. I want to see this place succeed but they need to get it together. I tried it shortly after opening and the food was ok, but I expected better for the price and menu. The second time the food was pretty good but the service was terrible. So I wanted to give it one more try and made reservations for the 4th of July. On July 2nd they call me and tell me they decided to close on the 4th, when it was way too late to make a reservation anywhere else in town. The Banyan did not disappoint. The food and atmosphere were great! The crispy cauliflower General Tso's were delicious. The Yellow Snapper over angel hair pasta was tossed in a nice light sauce. I usually don't get dessert, but I'm glad I did. The Carrot Cake was the best I'd ever had, so moist and plenty to share. I can't wait to go back when they open the rooftop deck! read more
