Stopped here for a bite while on a food tour and we were served 2 things. The sausage rolls came out first and were absolutely delicious! A meat mixture in a flakey pastry. We were then served gur cake. A mixture of sweets wrapped in bread. Didn't care too much for them. For a sweet we had a piece of a spice-filled dark pan bread that someone said tastes like Christmas. Was good. Tables are inside. A small park with a few tables is across the street. Delicious, Simple, and Friendly. If you need to get a great quick breakfast, this is your place. We had a pastry, cappuccino, and hot chocolate. All were amazing. We liked it so much, we came back for lunch. The sandwiches are the size of my 11 year old head... And only 4€. You can get the sandwich and pastry Cake for 5€. All bread is handmade and sandwiches are prepared to order. Plain or toasted. Fantastic deal! Lastly, we chatted with the baker himself. The Bakery in Temple Bar makes the best fruit flan. I had two slices today after a collegue brought it into the office for someone's birthday. Mmm! It was so soft and moist and had pretty icing sugar and kiwis on top as decoration. If you fancy not getting your food to go, The Bakery has a delighful seating area on the adorably named Pudding Row. How a bakery should *not* be! I've no patience for bad service or rudeness, no matter how fresh or nice the desserts are. This breaks my culinary heart, it really does. I've been visiting this place about twice a week for the past 9 weeks. I enjoy the sweets and the 5.50 Euro special of a sandwich and cake. I was there yesterday and had a lovely sandwich. Pastrami, bacon, Edam cheese and mayo on soft brown bread. It was yum. The brownie was delicious too. Today, I was craving the same thing. So I went back and was served by the older counter-lady. She was rude, hostile, and abrupt. When I started placing my order that I'd like pastrami, bacon, and Edam cheese - she cut me off and said it be more than 4 Euro. I pointed out that I know, I usually get the sandwich and cake special, and she said it'll still be more. I slightly protested, stating that it's never been that way in the past - which was, I suppose, an invitation to be lectured. She told me that I must never of ordered from her (true) and that the other girls are doing it wrong (great, but I doubt it). Then she said that you can't just order five toppings. I wasn't. I was ordering the same as I did the previous dozen times. If I was just being incorrectly charged, then this place is nowhere near as good a value as I first reviewed. But if you look at the pre-made or the custom made suggestions on the chalk-board, they are not any more modest than what I was asking. She was having a bad day, I suspect, and decided to flex some muscle over a customer. There's no shortage of places to eat in Temple Bar. Granted most are rubbish, but there are gems. I can easily find some place else to spend my money. Basically they lose out on 11 Euro a week for three minutes of work. It won't break them, but it will add up. I just walked out and went to an establishment down the road (which I've previously reviewed) that has fresh ingredients and an excellent deal of 5 fillings and a fillet of chicken with a combination of 3 things, be it a fizzy drink, crisps, or candy bar, all for only five Euro. read more

So far so good! I recently moved in the area and decided to give an irish bakery a try. Being from France I must say it's very hard for me to appreciate anything bready or cakey anywhere else. I ordered a cheese salad sandwich on brown bread and it was one of the best sandwiches I've had in a long time. Fresh, and the bread was actually tasty! Never thought I'd be enjoying an irish loaf! (Besides soda bread, that is, which I find exquisite). The coffe wasn't good, that's ok I won't get it from them. I previously tried their carrot cake, loved it. edit: I still want to give it 4 stars, but I forgot to say that yes, they are not overly polite, but I don't really care for the amount of time I'm spending there. The Bakery is situated down a side street, which is quite unfortunate as I don't think many people realise that the best bakery in Dublin is minute away from them. Upon entering the store you will notice how small it is, and that there are only three areas to sit, which are inconveniently situated right beside huge windows looking out onto the street. This is the only negative thing about the shop, after that I don't think you can say a bad thing against it. The prices are exceptional for the quality of product your are receiving. I got a huge sandwich on proper brown bread, along with a sizeable chocolate cake slice for five euros and fifty cent. I was so stuffed after the sandwich I had to "force" *ahem* myself to eat the chocolate slice, which I must say was perfect. It wasn't gluey, overly moist, or stale. It was 100% fresh and I couldn't believe I had nabbed it for a euro. I've also tried a date and fig slice, which while sounding a bit unappetizing, was quite unbelievably better than the chocolate slice! I still can't even register this still as I am a chocoholic. It looked beautiful - dark mahogany wedged between golden pastry - and it wasn't too filling or too overpowering. Hats off to the baker, amazing, amazing, amazing! The staff are brusque but I think that it is a given as the shop is very busy. Having said that they are quite friendly to regulars, and I even saw one woman run around the till and give a man a huge hug for his birthday. read more

Stopped in early on a Wednesday morning. Wasn't greeted with a friendly smile, more of a "Why are you here?" kind of attitude. Ordered a croissant and an apple turnover. The croissant was more doughy then flaky but the apple turnover was excellent. Just the right amount of sweetness with a perfect filling to pastry ratio. I'd go back for the turnover but I'd avoid the croissant. I'd also love to try their lunch options the next time I'm in Dublin. read more

Fabulous place. Less than stellar service, but I got over it in favor of the quality and great price of their food. 4 euro for an enormous sandwich (I especially love the smoked salmon or the chicken & stuffing), 3 euro for vol au vents (addictive) or mini tarts, and even less for a whole host of delicious pastries. Always fresh, but they do run out quickly if you go towards the end of the day. No seating inside (except for like 1 table if I remember correctly), but just outside on Cow's Lane there are lots of little benches and such to sit on and enjoy the sunshine (if there is any). read more

Last semester I had a class with Economist Tony Foley and he was always gong on about how great Fresh Irish Cream Cakes are, but my friends and I never had any idea what he was talking about. Today I found out. They are AMAZING. It also could have just been The Bakery, since everything looked amazing and was pretty cheap. The food is great but the service is terrible if you have the chance to be served by the older lady,hair highlights. I had to repeat my order 3 times to her as she was distracted by cleaning or smtg,and I was a bit annoyed still didnt say anythg to her,she saw me and she made faces. We sat down at one of the two tables available and when we were leaving she said to my boyfriend to tell me that she had to clean my table for me,we are talking about takeaway cups and napkins as they have no plates to serve on. Yer man made me a perfect double espresso, handed me the sammy and then when I handed him my card to pay, discovered they don't take them. I tried to leave all the goodies behind to run to an ATM but he wasn't havin' none of it; told me I was barred and sent me out the door with a wink and all my treasure. Best place to eat a sandwich in all of Dublin, never mind the incredible pastries. You could easily walk past this place, like I have done many times, and say, "hmmm... that smells nice" but not walk in. Do not make that mistake again! I have never in my life had a sandwich akin to what is offered here. It is an entirely different species of food altogether. The bread is freshly baked every morning and freshly cut for your made-to-order sandwich. The immense thickness of the slices of bread and overly generous sandwich fillers (included generous meat portions) is like nothing I have encountered before. I havn't even gotten on to the pastries yet... oh my, oh my, the pastries!! They are that little bit larger than you'd normally find as well as incredibly delicious... Always fresh and any of the cream filled ones are always perfect. My favourite has to be the almond croissant. But what I find mind-boggling about this place is how reasonable the price is. €5.50 for what has to be one of the best sandwichs in town and a large pastry. Love this place so much and am always trying to encourage people to get their arse in there! I can't walk past it without stepping in. Do it, your belly will thank you for it. Only ever had the apple strudel here but it was divine, everything looks so tasty its such a struggle to pick the few times I've been here I've reverted to getting the apple strudel just because it is so amazing but Ive promised myself to get something different next time! The muffins and croissants are huge and the gingerbread men so cutely decorated I just want to eat everything. They also do sambos and I think they have a lunchtime deal of a sambo and a cake for a fiver ( not totally sure) It is hidden away at the edge of temple bar but it is always full when I pass. To be honest it is the only proper bakery in Dublin that i know of and it is amazing. People have complained about the customer service but I think you can expect a rushed service as it is always so busy and besides, aren't you in a hurry to scoff the fab cake anyway hehe.
