We started by trying the Ham and cheese croissant - custard croissant and chocolate croissant: each one was eyeball-rolling-to-the-back-of-your-head phenomenal. The guy that pre-opens the store (e.g. sets out the chairs on the patio an hour before they truly open) isnt the friendliest - I asked if they were open upon seeing him one morning and his says "no" and just doesnt even look up at me. After tasting their goodies and seeing that line, I am sure he gets asked that a million times every day, so I try not to hold his "not morning person" attitude against him. This was a fantastic spot to pick up and run (it is quite small if you're looking to stay and eat here though). Make sure to order any and everything there: we wished we had more time so we could have eaten more of their delicacies!

The custard slice description is a golden and flaky puff pastry filled with fresh Irish Cream & Custard Sweet Fondant. The custard slice was nicely sized and had plenty of cream in the middle! I wish the top of the pastry wasn't hard though, it made eating it VERY messy and cumbersome, but it did taste good. The Americano paired nicely with my treat. Once I finished my mid-afternoon snack, I was told I could leave my dishes and they'd pick them up - a full-service café! Manning's Bakery is a cute little bakery/café serving up some delicious looking treats. I don't think I'd order the custard slice again - the top of the pastry being that hard made it cumbersome to bite and cut into and made a mess. The workers behind the counter were friendly enough but came off stressed out still. I'm also giving Hansel and Gretel Bakery & Patisserie 4/5 Green Stars for social and environmental impact, based on the following: Good quality baked items made from fresh ingredients; Coffee beans are from local micro roaster, Ariosa, which has some direct trade and organic offerings; pantry items for sale that support progressive local food companies; Hansel and Gretel has run bake sales to support charitable causes; discounted items at the end of the day helps avoid food waste. Items for improvement: Would be nice to see some vegan items - pastry and cakes made with vegan butter such as Naturl'i (available at Dunnes Stores) is just as good as pastry made from butter. It would also be good to see some tables in or outside the café that would then allow them to use ceramic cups instead of disposable cups. More vegetarian and vegan savory items would be good too (it was close to the end of the say so perhaps hard to judge).
