A powerhouse pastry shop when many nearby places are churning out somewhat mediocre food targeted at the office worker crowd. Huge, diverse selection. Great coffee. High recommend. Blueberry Scone: Creamy and buttery, with just a hint of blueberry. Great with the jam offered on the side. Tunisian Orange Cake: A true treasure. Loved the gooey cake texture that was sweet and had a nice hint of orange. Perhaps one of the better desserts I had here. Croissant: Flaky and light, as it should be. Ricciarelli: It was like a baton of almond paste, cooked to have a crispy cookie shell. I was a big fan of this, both texture and taste. Strawberry Jam Brioche: Doughnut like, but not quite. Kinda like someone put jam inside a dinner roll. Think I prefer real doughnuts more. Tiramisu: Felt thicker than tiramisu, more like a mousse that has some lady fingers at the bottom. I was so looking forward to visiting the Queen of Tarts, having such fond memories of past visits to Dublin. It was a shock to see the place converted into a new cafe, il Valentino, knowing how popular the former cafe had been. Now you walk up to a counter to place your order and carry all of your food/drinks to a table. In the past there was table service and delicious tea sandwiches. I opted for a tuna sandwich on a seeded roll. It was just okay, very bland, and the roll was tough to chew. Glad I didn't get it toasted, it would have been even tougher. This is a lovely bakery located right next to the water. The lines go out the door in the mornings on weekdays. There is an assortment of bread and pastries for sale, and they all look really good. I tried the small and large strawberry fruit tarts, and I also got a chocolate tart as well. The fruit tarts are good, but they do add this glaze on top of the fruit though. The tarts don't quite taste like the ones I really love in the United States but they are still good regardless. The chocolate tart was just perfect though. Crust was good, filling was good, size was good. I would definitely get this one again. They have a minimum charge of 2.80 euro on the credit card, but I'm glad that they take credit cards. read more

The service is great, you will be well looked after by the staff and Owen himself wich is a treat to have the owner behind and on the top of things. the display looks very yummy!!! and it has a good range of delicious breads with different fillings. Popped into Il Valentino today for the lunch and I highly recommend it. It's like a little bakery/patisserie/deli that offers muffins, pizza slices, sandwiches and all sorts of breads. Now I love bread - give it to me any day over chocolate - and the stuff their bread looks delicious. Lots of variety and all yummy. I opted for a vegetarian pizza slice and it was yum. Really tasty, which was surprising seeing as though I don't really believe food should come served without meat! But it was great and I'll be heading back there very soon. read more

My mother in law tells me that on a Sunday they sell their bread for half price... she tells me this as I am being ushered out the door and mentions that what she would really like is the large crusty swirley one and would I be a dear...... I was a dear.... and while I was there I treated myself to a large black coffee and a couple of the small macaroon type thingys. It was a nice day, so I sat out and further treated myself to a quiet cigarette as well... utterly civilised and even more so when you realise this was being done under the guise of Sunday morning chores (i'd love to cut the lawn but I have to run some errands for your mother dear...) The staff are mostly Italian and this adds to a lovely feel of something authentically foreign and well... charming I think, I am possibly seeing it through Marlboro tinted glasses but I stick by it none the less. This place has had the best write ups that I have seen of any bakery come coffee shop. So I ventured in for Yelp to see for myself. Average sized place with the amazing surroundings of the Docklands at it's disposal. The bread is out of this world, such a variety that is hard to find in Ireland, no doubt easier for the continental or major city dwelling folks. It's nice to know that we too have one in central Dublin. I had a coffee and muffin there, a healthy muffin if that is possible. They just bake everything as naturally and as healthy as possible, divine! I got some Pane Pugliese bread to go, mouth is watering again at the thought of it. Hmm so far the service has been good only 50% of the time (but I've only been here twice :-p); the first experience was on a weekday morning before work and the guy behind the counter was very, very impatient. The second time was Monday afternoon and the woman behind the counter was very, very patient. :-p Patience and good service are much appreciated! Blueberry scones are delicious; ask for the wonderful blueberry jam to go with it. I wasn't as impressed with the chocolate on chocolate cake as it turned out to be a little dry. Fantastic coffee, Wonderful assortment of cakes and breads!! (On entering the shop, 99% of people would be amazed.) This is my second visit. In my first visit, the assortment of cakes and how to display them(!) was much more fantastic (and exciting) than I had imagined, and I found myself totally at a loss for what to do! In that moment I knew I had to come back frequently, and so far I've tasted Croissant, Sandwich and some coffees. Croissant was nice, with purely rich flavor of butter and was not too fatty. But it was not as specially great as I had expected (from their website, I suppose). Cappuccino was too amazing. "Oh, then what were the things which I've thought 'amazing coffee' until now?" I thought! In the second time I had a Focaccia Sandwich: Grilled vegetable and Pesto. (Though the pesto was too much and consequently too oily,) The Focaccia itself was really good. When toasted, the surface was lightly crusty while the inside was tender and 'affectionate' (not sure how to express..like Pain de maman, as kindness of Mom!) Cafe Mocha was great, too! It was as profound as espresso, with perfect amount of 'hot chocolate' element. I've never tasted their cakes, and I MUST. And other Italian breads,too! I finally made it into Il Valentino. I walked past it a couple of times but it was never the right time for me. This time it was Easter monday and just half an hour before they closed. But we were very welcome, they only said we would get our coffee in a take away cup which was fair enough as we could still sit down, enjoy our pastries and leave with whatever bit of coffee was left in the cups to allow them to properly clean and finish up. It was tough to choose from all they have on offer, but I couldn't resist a fresh strawberry tartlet - the first ones for me this year. This cafe is always a lot of people. The patio is nice place because we can see Grand Canal. It's hard to get the table brunch and lunch time. You can order some sweets on online. The Italian owner of Il Valentino reputedly said he would only move to Ireland if he could set up a bakery. Ok! Il Valentino is gorgeous. This place was near our airbnb and so I would run an errand every morning to get breakfast for the family during our stay. This place had a line outside the store to pick up baked goods for the day - and I see why! We started by trying the Ham and cheese croissant - custard croissant and chocolate croissant: each one was eyeball-rolling-to-the-back-of-your-head phenomenal. The guy that pre-opens the store (e.g. sets out the chairs on the patio an hour before they truly open) isnt the friendliest - I asked if they were open upon seeing him one morning and his says "no" and just doesnt even look up at me. After tasting their goodies and seeing that line, I am sure he gets asked that a million times every day, so I try not to hold his "not morning person" attitude against him. This was a fantastic spot to pick up and run (it is quite small if you're looking to stay and eat here though). Make sure to order any and everything there: we wished we had more time so we could have eaten more of their delicacies! read more

Nice. Very italian. Good varity of deserts, coffees and sandwiches. My favourite is smoked sandwich bagel (toasted). Tuna malt is bit dry ( brown roll). Coffees are nice. And here's the problem, I like weak coffee flavour where's my boyfriend likes strong double espresso. For me Valentino is perfect, coffee is much weaker than in lolly and cooks so I'd rather eat/drink here than there :-) read more

Oh Il Valentino, you provide the sweet sweet morning ambrosia. I frequent this fine establishment every hung over Sunday morning, at the behest of my wonderful girlfriend, who's only audible words are a quiet and strained " cofffeeee ", sheepishly I make my way out, as not to disturb her further from her slumber, for I know of only one way to bring the dead back to life. Two small one shot americano's with no sugar and a splash of milk, €2 each, and a small sweet pastry for the walk back for myself. The coffee is always nice and strong, if somewhat small, and tastes fantastic. I have however taken away one star, this is due to the queuing system, I may be cynical and antisocial when I am hung over, but when all you want is a coffee you should not have to queue with the people who want stuff from the pastry / bakery counter, nothing grinds my gears more then having to stand behind someone who is indecisive about what danish they want, when your so hung over you're relying on your auto-pilot to get you places. Perhaps some kind of fast track for those just wanting drinks. read more

Meh. Since we moved, or more accurately started looking in the GCD area, I've been to Il Valentino a few times. Although they seem to use good quality coffee, I find it weak and to be honest I prefere the coffee from the Fresh supermarket next door. Il Valentino carry a good variety of cakes and pastries, which can be nice, although I am not a big pastry person so it is of limited appeal to me. My most recent visit was this afternoon (prevening?). We were looking for somewhere to sit outside for 1/2 hour and have a coffee in the sun. We got a coffee and a couple of small snacks. The coffee, while better than the last time I was here, is still weak. Il Valentino is also a bakery and on Sunday afternoons they sell off the remaining breads 1/2 price. As we were leaving we decided to grab a french stick to go with out dinner. When I asked for one, i was told that they were closed and they could not sell me the bread that was almost certainly going to be thrown out. Just to be clear, I was standing in the premises beside the counter at the time. I can think of few things that annoy me more than standing on a commercial premesis wanting to hand over money and being told that they don't want it. Look it's ok if you are in the area and fancy a cuppa, especially if the weather is good, but apart from that, I wouldn't go out of my way. It's not a bad place by any standards, and is still a lot better than countless places in Dublin that I could call to mind, but the hit or miss service, weak coffee and refusal to take my money leaves me feeling cold. No, I'm sorry but no. A small soup that tastes of nothing other than potato water with a side of monocle- sized 'bread' for 4 Euro? Ahem, come on! That bread slice was so thin, I could've done my nails perfectly whilst looking through it. Anticipating that the soup might not be a big bowl, I also ordered a slice of pizza. I can honestly say it was the worst I ever had. Dry (not the 'next morning' kinda way) and decorated with (amongst other veg) mushrooms that weren't even fresh, I was charged 4.90Euro for that. The prices weren't displayed anywhere (at least not visibly) so I was a bit shocked at the till but at that stage I was still full of hope for nice flavours. Sadly, this is not the place for me although I might try one of their pastries as they looked divine. But then again, they also might cost as much as a pastry WITH coffee elsewhere. read more

Went here today for a work lunch and was recommended to try the foccacia with chicken, peppers and cheese. Seeing as this place is Italian, I was hoping for some bresaola but they didn't have any. So back to the chicken and an Americano. Divine. Nice and fresh filling and the foccacia was to die for. After a bad Espresso experience nearby , I was pleased to find somewhere that restored my faith in Dublin espressos and Italian food, served by staff who know how to treat customers. I agree with most people that your pastry was good and this review would have received full score but there's still room for improvement in the way you treat your waiting customers. Today I visited your bakery with a friend, and while I was waiting in line (which was supposed to be right after my friend), two random gentlemen cut in before me; they were promptly served leaving me surprised. Not the kind of person who likes to start a quarrel, I let that go and continued waiting dutifully for my turn. After placing my order of a Ham & Cheese Croissant and a Strawberry Tea Cake with an employee, I went ahead before those 2 queue-cutters who at this point in time were waiting for their orders, and attempted to place an order for a Latte (and of course pay for my order) to which I was told to queue up by another veteran staff (who had also served my friend), implying that I was the one who didn't wait in line. I was embarrassed and felt victimized by your staff, and it just ruined my Good Friday. I understand that your bakery is well-known in Dublin but please don't let that get to your head. I hope that my experience was just an isolated incident and wish that you could spare some time contemplating with your team how you could avoid such incidents from occurring in the future. read more

Can I just say what a find! My boyfriend purchased two amazing tartlets here for my birthday! The chocolate tartlet stole the show-decadent and rich! The strawberry tartlet was light and tasty! Excellent bakery that makes Italian and continental style bread fresh, on the premises from scratch everyday. The bread contains no enzymes, preservatives or additives and is doughy on the inside and crusty on the outside! The Tuscan bread is my favourite and I use it to make bruschetta as they suggested and I am also I real big fan of their pastries, especially their fruit tarts, but please don't tell my Weight Watchers coach! read more
