Should've trusted our instincts (and the parking lot). My best friend and I were visiting New Orleans and looking for a casual sit-down dinner that didn't require navigating the French Quarter or negotiating with a prix-fixe seafood tasting menu. She's Team Shellfish, I'm Team Absolutely Not, and The Backyard seemed like a happy medium: diverse menu, chill vibes, close drive from our Airbnb. What could go wrong? Spoiler alert: A lot. It started in the parking lot, or rather, the lack of one. After circling for a bit, we found a spot across the street--only to be summoned back by a security guard letting us know that lot belonged to a different restaurant. (Maybe slap a sign up, y'all?) He was kind enough to let us park on the street and even offered to keep an eye on our car. Honestly, he gets five stars. He's not the problem. We walked into The Backyard and were immediately steered toward the bar or outside seating--which was weird because it's summer in NOLA and there were literally open tables in the dining room. We requested one of those two-tops and were seated. No menus arrived for a while, so we browsed Yelp pics and crossed our fingers. When our server did arrive, I asked if they had root beer on the fountain. She said yes. I got a bottle. Not a huge deal, but it was the first in a line of small missteps. Then came the mysterious cheese conversation. We were told there was only one slice of provolone left--which would've been super relevant if either of us had ordered cheese. (We didn't. We ordered Sloppy Joes.) Our server apologized and took that conversation to a table that had actually ordered cheese. The food finally came out (pretty mid, nothing memorable), and then--after we started eating--our appetizer showed up. Bold move. And then... it rained. Indoors. On us. Drips started falling from the ceiling--right over our table--from an exposed pipe and vent. My friend got hit on the shoulder, then her food. That was it. The final soggy straw. We didn't cause a scene. But we did mention it to our server, who told us, "There's nothing we can do, but if you want to move to another table, you can. It's only condensation." (ONLY condensation? From a dirty pipe? On our food? C'mon, Tina. You can do better than that!) My friend asked for a refill, and five minutes later our server walked by with a tray for another table and told her, "that's right - you wanted another beer!" We reminded her it was a Diet Coke. She returned with the beer (yes, you read that right) five minutes after that, and then finally a Diet Coke another couple of minutes later. Shortly after that, we received a check. Not ours, but what did we expect? We got the check with the beers on it. We were able to call our server over and alert her to (ANOTHER) error, and she finally brought ours out. (It was more than the first one; we should have paid the front check!) We paid. We left. And now we review. Two stars because the root beer in the bottle was pretty good and the sandwich (pre-drip) was not bad. Also, the security guard who didn't even belong to them was delightful. I don't want to be completely heartless. But would we go back? Not unless the air conditioning unit makes a public apology. read more

I came here after work, I understand they are busy and packed ! VERY UNDERSTANDABLE, but what did it for me is that I ordered at 5:49 pm. Over 20 people placed an order AFTER ME. Guess who received their orders before me ? Those 20 plus people !!!! The two waitress walked pass me several times, I went to the to go window where I placed my order. No one saw what I needed for over 5-10 minutes of me standing there, the boy looked at me and did not ask if there was anything I needed and the girl grabbed menus for others who again came after me rather than asking if there was anything I needed. After a few more minutes passed by, she finally came and asked "you're still waiting on the order". Yes! I indeed still was waiting on my order, she said it was 3 more minutes on tots. I SAW HER AND THE BOY BRING SEVERAL PLATES OF TOTS, FRIES, AND OTHER MEALS OUT ! What did it for me was the boy took the next persons order after ignoring me at the window. Did not look like your regular bbq joint. Reminded me a chain restaurant from the outside but inside was really nice and inviting. Very casual atmosphere. The menu is limited but when we asked they had ribs. So we ordered half a rack of ribs, a pulls pork sandwich with fries and a brisket sandwich. The ribs were very tender, as was the brisket. Both had a great smoke flavor which didn't require any sauce. The pulled pork was piled high and also had great flavor. The fries were the basic crinkle cut...nothing special about them. Only problem I had was the sauces. They were vinegar based and too strong. The meat was good enough to not need any sauce. Service was nice. It wasn't packed but once it got full, we still received the same service as when we were the only table in there. read more

Was craving a burger, stumbled across this place. Great service and food. I got the burger and the other ppl in my group ordered the boom burger. We got a side of tator tots, fries and potato salad. The burgers were big and delicious, so were the fries and tots. Potato salad was missing flavor, not sure if that's a normal for them or perhaps just personal preference. But a no for me. I come here often and the service is nice but today is my last time coming here. I always get "the burger". Well today, I called in my order and forgot to add cheese on my burger. I called back ten minutes later and said "I forgot to add cheese on my burger, can I add American cheese" the man who answered said yes that's fine. So when I actually went to pick up my order, the guy hands me my food (after handing him my card) and says "they couldn't add the cheese cause your order was done already ". I honestly thought he was joking. I said "are you serious " and he replied , "yes". So I asked for the cheese on the side and I'll add it myself. He smugly replied "ok" as if I was inconveniencing him. It is National Burger Day so I decided to try a new one. It did not disappoint. Juicy, high quality smashed beef patties loaded with cheddar and grilled onions, lettuce, tomato, and pickles. i went there the other day with a friend. We ate light, as we ordered the snacks. We ordered all of them. lol. I was in the mood for pimento cheese dip. We also ordered the wings, the muffuletta stuffed eggs, and the smoked tuna dip. My only complaint is that i wish the chips were salted. Beyond that, everything is fantastic! in my opinion, they have the best pimento cheese in town. The cheese is hand grated, not that stuff that is chemically sprayed to prevent clumping. the eggs are creamy and salty. The tuna is a light and delicious snack. The wings were the star. Probably the best in town. they are delectable smoked and then glazed with a crystal hot reduction. The sauce is not spicy. Better than any buffalo sauce. I ordered the ranch and blue cheese sauces to pair with the wings. Those are not some jar bought sauces. We're moving to Lakeview soon and wanted to give this cute little neighborhood joint a try, especially since we had our grandson with us and he can play in the backyard without bothering other customers. The backyard is a counter service place where you walk up and place your order and pay and someone brings your food to the table. After you're done eating, you clean up yourself and place the baskets on top of the trashcan. The service was extremely friendly, and I like the backyard area with picnic tables and fans and room for kids to move around and play. I was disappointed that there is no longer a kids playground area, which is part of the reason why I decided to stop at there. Everyone really enjoyed their food thought my Greek salad with grilled chicken was just ok. The biggest BUT in this review, is that there is just no getting around how insanely expensive this place is. We had four adults and a child, and none of us got any type of drink other than water except for one Coke, and our total with tax and tip was $125 , you read that right. $125 for a family of four with a kid to eat out hamburgers, sandwiches, and hotdogs for $125. Here's what we had for $125... I went in to order takeout at the bar. It's a small but cute little place. I ordered a Brisket sandwich, crinkle fries, and a sprite and paid about $25. It was hot when they bought it and it took about 15 minutes or so. Overall the brisket sandwhich was well good and tasty! Crinkle fries were good too but nothing to brag about. I chose to sit at the bar which is rare for me but it was after lunch and they looked like most of the cleaning was complete and the bar was convenient. Anyway it worked out because the bartender was attentive to the 4 customers and myself. I they have both sweet and unsweetened tea., which is becoming rarer. Anyway the bartender recommended the Brisket sandwich and I enjoyed the sandwich. It was the perfect size with ample brisket. You can choose the cut of the brisket, fatty, lean, or mixed. I went with mixed and it was just right. The sauce is warmed on the side and is paired well with the brisket not overpowering but enhances. Unfortunately typical of most bar/burger joints they have limited "healthy" sides, so I just had the sandwich. But I would recommend here and if I was closer I would be here more often to try the other sandwiches on the menu. P.S. there were three pickles I ate one to see if they're sweet or dill. My first time here and it was great! We were seated at the bar and the bartender was very friendly and attentive. We came on Sunday evening to grab a bite since we were in the Lakeview area. The deviled eggs. No words. I'm not 100% a fan of muffulettas but they might've converted me. The salami on top was so crispy I would definitely get those again. I didn't really hear about this place or know anything about it, but I was looking for an outdoor venue with fairly decent food and a chance to watch some pre-season football. Turns out, this place popped right up on my search and filled in the parameters that I was looking for. There are indoor seats, but the outdoors really looks more like a backyard. Picnic-style tables, a little bit of a play area, and TVs under the overhangs so that you can enjoy whatever is being shown. It's dog friendly, which is great, and you can just walk up to the outside counter and order whatever food or beverages fit your mood. Tried a little bit of everything while there -- the muffuletta deviled eggs, the pimento cheese, the brisket, the burger, the tots... there were only two of us, but it was hard to decide what to really eat when everything sounded so good. The only one that was kind of meh was the burger, of all things, but we had so much food that it didn't even matter at that point. I do like The Backyard a lot. It's changed a lot too and for the better with great improvements inside and a really nice outdoor seating. I'm mainly there for the food and it's genuinely one of the most / more affordable places where the consistent quality in the food keeps me going back. I've tried a lot from the menu and never a letdown but the BBQ when available on the weekends mainly is absolutely on the better side compared to the more "specific" dedicated BBQ places. The ribs are I bit more pricey not by much but the quality and smoke in it is way better. Although be warned it does not include sides. However, a lot of food and more of a portion than LITERALLY any BBQ spot in town. The brisket is fantastic as is the sloppy Joe's which is made up of the chopped up brisket too. Sides are all good. Hamburgers very reasonable in price and big. Other foods all good value. Well worth the drive to get here. read more
