The energy was great, people were watching, cheering, and enjoying the moment. But with record-breaking heat outside, I was surprised to learn that refilling a cup with water was apparently not allowed unless you paid for it. While I was simply trying to get some water, security started yelling, "You can't do that! You can't do that!" At first, I honestly didn't even realize he was talking to me -- because in my mind, I was just doing the most basic human survival activity: getting water. Then came the plot twist: "YOU HAVE TO PAY FOR WATER HERE!" And just like that, the World Cup became the Water Cup -- available for purchase only. All jokes aside, it was disappointing. Water, especially on a hot day and in a public-facing establishment, feels like something that should be offered with a little more kindness and humanity. If you're visiting from another country and had a similar experience, I'm truly sorry. Please know this isn't everyone here. There are many good people in this country who would gladly offer you a glass of water for free -- and probably ask if you needed ice, too.

Cool upscale food court attached to a Marriott boutique hotel…read more Great atmosphere during the World Cup as they had a big screen with speakers and an easy to access bar. There was also a person handing out free taster frozen whiskey shooters. Pretty kid friendly. I brought my 2 and 4 year old to meet up with another family from out of town with young kids. A little loud during the World Cup, but seating was plentiful on a Thursday night and they had a few kid friendly food options (grilled cheese, pizza, quesadillas, chicken nuggets and fries). Parking was easy as there's a covered parking garage attached to the hotel and I think I only paid $1 for 2 hours of parking. There's also a small water splash pad outside for kids to run through and cool down on a hot summer day. Cool spot.

Then you leave the dishes on the table when you're done, no need to clean up. It's not the best for ambiance, more for casual dining. (3.5 stars) Coming from a city where "food hall" is…read moresynonymous with "overpriced," I found Union Grove a breath of fresh air. That isn't to say that the offerings here were dirt cheap but rather that I didn't feel like the food hall setting was a license to jack up prices. Union Grove boasts a respectable variety of vendors for its size, and the offerings range from Cajun to Asian to pizza and wings and more. I opted for the ironically named Health Camp, the Woodway outpost of a longstanding Waco burger-and-shake joint. While the shake selections looked tempting, I limited myself to a Health Burger (cheeseburger), tots, and a drink. At the risk of drawing pitchforks, the burger was a bit underwhelming. It was a fast food style single patty, very thin, and though tasty enough when dressed (lettuce, tomato, mustard, ketchup), not really worth $7. I realize that for locals, nostalgia is a powerful lure (Greensboro's Beef-Burger had similar adherents), but if you didn't grow up with Health Camp's burgers, I'd have to believe that you could do better. To their credit, the tots were perfectly crisp and priced right. One final note: Union Grove has plenty of seating, but it can also get rather loud. There's an adjoining arcade, so expect kids running around. If the acoustics don't bother you, however, then the warehouse atmosphere can be fun.

While waiting for my party to arrive I sat at the second floor bar, Heaven Hill, and ordered a couple cocktails. The bar tender, a pleasantly upbeat woman, educated me on the various food options as well as some of their favored cocktails. I had a raspberry beret (shoutout Prince) and a Larceny Paloma. The name was just calling me. While the beret was fruity and refreshing, the Paloma had a bite and kick that snuck up on you. I loved it!! As it's a mall of food there was no trying just one lol. We tried the dry rub brisket bar, chef chin's hibachi ramen, chilango's tacos, cotton and snow, and unlawful assembly brewing co. To finish the evening. Brisket with Mac and cheese; burria tacos; tonkotsu ramen; cookies and cream ice cream; and lastly a Moscow Mule to end the evening. The Mac and cheese from the brisket bar was terrible.
