Forgot to take the picture it was so good black beans and rice, over easy eggs, yucca and the most delicious plantains.

Not much ever comes to Corsicana in the way of good food. Mostly we just get fast food. But while looking on Yelp to find new places to go we found Calle 7. It's been a while but we've been meaning to go. Yesterday on the way to do some errands, we decided that was the day. I'm really glad we stopped. The interior is very nice. Everything is clean and pretty. The dining area is a smallish space with about 10 four top tables. The white walls, interesting artwork and dark mahogany furniture create a classy, casual and elevated space. It's a little echoey and I can imagine if all the tables were filled it might be fairly loud but it was just us and one other table, so it was fine. They also have a pretty little outdoor area, on the eastern wall, with metal tables and an awning to keep off any sun. Highway 31 closely passes not too far from the front so I imagine sitting out there in the summer might not be appealing, but I'm sure spring, fall and maybe even winter it would nice. There were two young women dining out there when we came in and they seemed to be enjoying themselves. The waitress was friendly, attentive without being annoying and helped us sort out what options we had as vegans. I was happy to find there were several vegetarian options on the menu. Now for the really important part; the food was amazing. It was completely elevated. We ordered off the breakfast menu, which they were perfectly happy to provide at 6 o'clock at night. I got rice and black beans with two over easy eggs, cooked to perfection, fried plantains and yucca with two small cheese corn tacos. The plantains were fried to a soft crusty deliciousness. The yucca was also crunchy and soft and easy to eat which is not always the case with yucca. The little corn tacos were adorable made with stringy Mexican cheese that was salty and tasty. The black beans and rice were flavored perfectly. I don't normally like rice but that dish won me over. I also got two of the best corn tortillas ever. I've never eaten a corn tortilla that flavorful or substantial. They were a good size, a little thicker than normal, so they held together really well, and they had the most wonderful texture. Again, I was amazed by the combination of textures and flavors and spices that placed my dinner in the gourmet Mexican food category. Every single bite was delicious and some of the bites were unusual AND delicious. My husband had Enchiladas Mexicanas which were corn tortillas generously stuffed with queso fresco and guajillo sauce a very good substitute for the normal ranchero or red sauce on most enchiladas. He also had a generous helping of Spanish rice, which I normally don't care for, but it was tasty. Covering the rest of his plate were vegetables that were cooked with the spicy guajillo sauce. Needless to say he didn't need a to-go box. It was more food than I could get around though, so I happily took my leftovers home. I had them for a late night snack last night and breakfast this morning. Delicious the second (and third) time around. We left happy and full and were immediately making plans to come back to this cozy, put together venue with food way out of Corsicana's league. I recommend you try it. I think you'll be very satisfied you did.

The food here is always wonderful. On Tuesday and Thursday they have street taco special. 12- $10.99 and that's enough for at least 2 people. Get the pastor! It's amazing. Their refried black beans are awesome. Margaritas are perfect. Mary our waitress and bartender was awesome. Service is great. Not just Mary checking on us but all staff. The only reason I didn't give them 5 stars was because there was a couple of guys sitting at the bar drinking tequila and being very loud. So loud that we could hear each other talk. Place is typically very quaint and that's one reason we love it.

Poor. Slow service. Our breakfast orders weren't prepared correctly. The server was clearly unfamiliar with the menu. Never again.

I had the carbonara, and honestly, it was almost too pretty to eat. The service was a little slow, but it actually gave us time to soak in the atmosphere and admire how beautiful the restaurant is inside. The vibe? Absolutely check. The cocktails were not our favorite, but that definitely won't stop us from coming back to try other drinks on the menu. What makes this place even more special is that it's a true mom-and-pop restaurant sourcing food locally. You really can't beat that. Supporting local while getting an amazing meal is always a win.

Pink and honest in the middle, warm and willing, bread holding it all together like a good road holding a long drive. Nothing flashy, nothing trying too hard just flavor that knew where it came from and didn't apologize. The arugula salad came sharp and clean, green with intent, that bitter edge that wakes you up a little and reminds you you're still alive. It wasn't there to impress you. It was there to balance things out, like a deep breath between sentences. I drank Earl Grey tea, steam rising slow, bergamot drifting up like memory, like train smoke somewhere far off. It felt right. The kind of tea you drink when you're not rushing anywhere, when the world can spin without you for a moment and that's okay. Fern in the Wild isn't trying to reinvent eating. It's doing something better. It's paying attention. To ingredients. To pace. To the quiet pleasure of a meal done right.
