Stopped here on the way home from a backpacking trip in Emigrant Wilderness. The ambience and layout of the place are great -- open-air seating with misters, which was perfect on a hot day. Even the bathroom was impressively clean and modern, which you don't always find. I ordered the fried chicken sandwich, as did the rest of my group (four of us total). Unfortunately, we were all a bit underwhelmed. The sandwich looks great in photos, but didn't quite deliver on flavor. The bun was a little too thick, which overpowered the other ingredients. The pickles were also a bit too aggressive, throwing off the balance of the sandwich. The chicken itself was okay, but the breading lacked crispiness and seasoning -- just kind of bland. Some folks in our group got the garlic waffle fries and liked them. I had the side salad, which was fresh but nothing special. All in all, it was a beautiful spot to rest and cool off, but the food left us wanting more. Not terrible, but definitely didn't live up to the visual appeal. Just okay. read more

They have an inside, outside and upstairs patio on a first come first serve basis, so you have to have an eye out to locate a table or you could make friends and do a community type seating arrangement. First time here and we loved it! We came from far (Santa Cruz, CA) and needed a good outdoor setting... Fish tacos were wonderful and blackberry mojito to die for!! Elenor and Natalie were very attentive and kind. Overall all staff were kind and very welcoming. Having never been there, it was confusing how the service at this restaurant works. We were not greeted by anyone and the fact that we were wandering around looking lost, and trying to figure out what to do was annoying. We finally had to ask a busy bartender and were informed that the downstairs outside is self serve and you have to order at the bar and then they will bring your food to you. The upstairs and the barrel room are full service. Once we figured out where we were sitting, the experience improved. Our servers were friendly and attentive. The food was very well prepared and flavorful. We will go back, now that we have an idea what to expect. read more

As much as I wanted to like this place, it was simply too bizarre and unorganized to give it much credit. We came for lunch. The two stars were just for the food, a Bang Band Bowl that was quite good, although not dressed thoroughly. More on that later. We entered at the front, a rather cold and imposing entry, a block off Sonora's main thoroughfare. The place is enormous with a series of rooms and spaces most suitable for events. The ambiance is creative, interesting, and stark, but it goes directly downhill from there, other than a pleasant courtyard and upper outdoor seating area. When you walk in, there is absolutely no way to know where to go or what to do. It's just a myriad of spaces. I guess you can sit in one of the dark rooms and wait for the boogeyman to arrive. There is a bar right at the entrance and another in the courtyard. We gravitated to the nice sunlit courtyard and just stood wondering what to do, as apparently others have done from previous reviews. And we stood and stood and stood. Occasionally, servers would pass by us and say nothing or even acknowledge our presence. Does management train them??? We then stopped one server and asked what to do and told rather abruptly, 'just go to the bar and order'. After standing at the bar for quite a while, someone did come take our order. When we paid at the checkout machine, it didn't give us a receipt as requested, and the person just shrugged. No receipt. We proceeded upstairs to find a table and got settled. A very pleasant woman server came to take our order and seemed perplexed when she saw a number at our table. It became apparent that if we had come upstairs, we would have been waited on and served. Why couldn't someone say that? We felt sorry for the woman server as she seemed sincerely wanting to accommodate us. MANAGEMENT: If you don't have a reception station, which is perfectly fine, then at least POST A SIGN AT THE ENTRANCE STATING: PLEASE SEAT YOURSELF AND YOU WILL BE SERVED. Or train your staff in courtesy. Simple!! Our meals arrived, and the server, not the woman, seemed annoyed we were upstairs. He just tossed the bowls down and asked abruptly, "anything else"? I commented that we needed eating utensils, and he pointed to a service counter in a far-off corner and said, "it's over there", and left. I was stunned. Very poor manners and service, and so nonchalant, like not my job to wait on you. Another annoying fact was the spray misters, which I do appreciate in the heat, kept dousing us with water. Admittedly it was windy. The Bang Bang bowl was good, came in a recyclable paper container. The greens and fixings were fresh, and the soba noodles well prepared. The dressing, which was good with a spicy tang, was heavily doused on the noodles but nothing else. As we finished, the woman server came over to give us our bill, and we explained we had already paid it at the bar but had no receipt to prove it! She believed us and just let it go, with a smile. I guess if you're a local and frequent the place there wouldn't be all this confusion. This establishment would be wonderful if it only had some organization and management oversight. What a great surprise this place was! Super cool environment, amazing drinks and the food was ON POINT! Short ribs were The Bomb! Nachos off the hook! Pretzel was warm and salty with nice cheese dip and stone ground mustard. I absolutely loved the Cherry Bourbon Sour (Eric mixes mean drinks) . We were visiting Twain Harte and was recommended this restaurant (less than a 20 minute drive.) The restaurant is super cute, we ate outside on the upper patio but there was a beer garden/bar area below. We had the kids chicken tenders with waffle tries, Bavarian pretzel, fried chicken sandwich, a strawberry mule and a beer. The strawberry mule was very refreshing- I would get it again (I think I would ask for light mint next time though) The pretzel is huge and the mustard and cheese sauce were both delicious for dipping The fried chicken sandwich was crispy and really good, it came with chips and a green salsa which was tasty. Everything was brought out quickly, our server (female in college at Sac state) was super attentive and everything tasted great. We will be back next time we are in town read more

I am visiting from New York and I came here for the second evening in a row! Everything is so fresh! I recommend the poke bowl, the Sonoma chicken salad, and for sure the garlic loaded fries with ranch! Natalie and Eleanor were exceptional weight staff and Eleanor even has her signature cocktail Strawberry Fields, which is delicious with the Sonoma chicken salad! This place is just wow!!!! Was awestruck by the way each and every corner here is thought of. Was here just for drinks, did not try any food here. As you enter the place a barrel shaped door welcomes you that leads to a cozy bar area open till midnight. They serve the best cocktails in the most creative glasses. I have never drank out of a pig glass and licked the salt from its bum !!! The servers were very nice & friendly. If you go straight after entering, on your right is an open air 2-story bar. The upstairs can be reserved for parties. Checkout my uploaded video of this open space. Words might not do justice. Other than these areas, there is a huge hall that looked like a club's floor with a DJ's space in one corner and bar on one wall. There is also a dining hall for people to sit and hang out. We go the Armory often because of the ambiance , wonderful food and excellent service. It truly is like coming home. Last night was no exception. We brought friends who had never been before. Our server Ellie made us feel very welcome, made recommendations that came with the reasons why. In a previous visit the server and bartender (Wyatt) had made me a signature drink that fit my requirements and wrote down the instructions. I brought his "recipe" to have him make it for me and it was excellent once again. For us, this restaurant always provides a warm welcome, excellent food and bit of lovely conversation. The Armory added such a cool flair to gorgeous and historic downtown Sonora. The food is delicious, the drinks both at the outdoor bar and inside the attached Bourbon Barrel are excellent, plenty of seating, friendly staff, and very fun vibe. This is one of those newer, must-go places to take your visitors from out of town or just to visit on a night out. The music is loud and fun! Even in winter, there were a lot of people out, and I can't wait to see the upstairs balcony seating when it opens for service when the weather is better. One piece of feedback for the restaurant: I asked for gluten free Baja tacos and got flour tortillas. So if you have a gluten restriction, make sure to emphasize this more when ordering. I'm not allergic, just restricted, so i didn't send it back or anything and the tacos were still good. My friend got the chicken sandwich with waffles fries and Loved it. Went to the Armory for drink and some food. Were told by a manager that they only had one server....Could be a bummer, So we decided to sit and take our chances and ordered drinks with Natalie. Wow, not a wasted step for her and team (the had food and drink delivers) big help. Drinks were great, and didn't have to wait forever! So we went for the food. Adult Kids got the Goat cheese Gnocchi, They said they really enjoyed it! Wife and I split The Prime rib French dip sandwich...AWESOME! loved it They had a full bar, for real drinks and a full beer line...Including Draft Coors Light! which is great! Just wanted to thank Natalie for her great job under pressure, and very professional service. I didn't mention that we sat down 5 minutes after a very large family group...Which had me thinking like lots of wasted time, BUT NO! Natalie handled us all great. 5 Stars all day! What a great find! We were visiting Sonora on a day trip to the Sierra Repertory Theatre to see "ELVIS!" We came early so we could explore the downtown and have lunch prior to the show. My wife and I always enjoy eating at the bar and oh my goodness what a bar. Timeless classic bar with a killer ambiance. Our bartender was super attentive and very knowledgeable about the menu. After exploring the drink and food menu options - we ordered a cold draft beer and a chili mango margarita! The beer was served in a cold glass and was perfectly balanced. The chili mango margarita was very tasty with a smokey hint of spice! I had the poke bowl - which was fresh and delicious (our bartender stated it is flown in fresh from the San Francisco fishing dock. My wife had the short rib tacos - which rivaled any short rib taco we have ever tasted! Both selections were delicious winners. The bar service was 5 out of 5 and the kitchen was the same! Our food and drinks were served quickly and efficiently. Our bartender checked regularly on us - but wasn't too hovering - which was perfect! Can't wait to visit again!
