a plate of salad and a glass of water

I am so pleased that I have stuck with this local delight. Early on, some issues had affected my review but it would seem things have improved enough to add a star. I would rather keep my money local in an locally owned restaurant and I am more than happy to do so at The Anvil. I do keep my orders to the hot and cold sandwiches and the occasional steak and continue to be more than pleased with them as well as the service and cocktails at the bar and from our local favorite bartender. Cheers!

My husband and I grew tired of restaurant chains, which is all they had in the area we were in so we decided that on the way home, we would stop at the first unique place that caught our eye. As we left Rutland, Vermont, we stumbled upon a very historical and charming town of Fort Edward, a place that neither my history buff husband or I had heard of. We're new to upstate NY so exploring this area is a must. There are little towns with delicious hidden restaurant and bars tucked in pockets of early America and the Anvil Inn boasts of it all. We actually turned around to go back to this place because it snuck up on us. It looked like an old red farmhouse, but it was actually an old blacksmith shop from the 1840's. Its rustic interior splayed glass bottles along the window sills which were all original to the area. The main bar was made of wood that was cut from a tree from Warrenburg. A large fireplace in the dining area looks as if thats where the blacksmith kept his flame lit. After taking in all its historical glory, we sat and gazed out into the drizzled courtyard, dreaming of sunny days and how wonderful it could be to sit under the giant old maple tree. Since it was cool and rainy we ordered a cup and crock of french onion soup, a favorite of mine. It came in brownstone ware bowls with the cheese throughly melted and crusted onto the rim. Chunks of bread sunk deep into the bowl, drunk by cheese...it was marvelous. Next, our prime rib cold sandwich (for me) and hot and melted for him, arrived promptly after devouring our soup. The service was prompt and friendly, but not overly enough to be annoying. The sandwich was exactly how I wanted a BLT and I wished I had kept it original after having tasted my husbands hot version with the original horeradish sauce. I had switched out my horse-radish for mayonnaise and probably ought to have tried it with it as the sauce was not overpowering like most places, which is what turned me off horse-radish all together. The fries as the side were thin and hand-cut but delicately delicious, but I wished that they weren't so thin as they cooled too quickly and became hard. Otherwise, my husband and I have agreed to stop into the Anvil each time we're working in the area. We can't wait to try other items on their menu and take in the charm.

Came here for the first time last night. Have heard of the Anvil for a while but just never made it there. We have family staying in town for the weekend and took them to the Anvil for dinner since the menu had something for even the pickiest (as in primary meal consumption is burgers) of diners. I love the historic building and the general towny vibe. Not pretentious with very friendly staff. There's crackers with some kind of yummy spread on the table to start buzz sawing through if you happen to be hungry. Appetizers included shrimp cocktail (giant, fresh shrimp served chilled) and onion soup (solid reviews from the picky one). Main dishes were prime rib, burger and 2 salmon dijonnaise. Everything was cooked exactly as we had asked...and the salmon didn't have a hint of fishiness (meaning: fresh!). Salads that came with the dinner were cold and crisp....plus the blue cheese dressing was really good (so were the other salad dressings). OH...the bread.....I could have eaten the entire basket of bread myself...it's really good. We shared the caramel custard and chocolate mousse desserts. Both were delicious....the caramel dessert was basically flan and the chocolate mousse was very dark and rich. A perfect ending to a lovely meal.

Tonight my husband and I arrived at lake George and were having a tough time finding somewhere to eat that didn't have a crazy wait. We ventured to The Anvil Inn after seeing Welch rarebit on the menu. When we arrived we were told we were getting the last available table but most of the tables were empty. Our waitress took our drink order and appetizer order and brought us crackers with a cream cheese spread that was delicious! Our Welch rarebit dip was insanely good! My husband also had clam chowder which he said was really good. So we were excited for our main courses. I ordered the NY strip with brandied mushrooms and French fries while my husband ordered chicken Alfredo. Both courses came with a house salad, I had requested to swap for a Caesar salad but was told it wasn't possible but I could have Caesar dressing on my house salad. When our salads arrived at first look the croutons looked crispy and delicious however they were saturated in oil leaving our mouths coated in oil. The "Caesar" dressing had so much vinegar it was inedible. Our waitress never checked in and never asked why we pushed them aside. When our main dishes came out they were beautiful! I am a huge mushroom fan so I started there. Unfortunately I got a rather nasty bitter taste. It only took one more bite to realize it was the brandy. It had not been cooked off at all. I tried to get our waitress's attention for several minutes before she finally noticed. I explained that I expected the brandy to be cooked off which would have left a nice flavor. She offered to have them replaced and went to the kitchen. When she returned she informed us that it wasn't possible since all the mushrooms were brandied. She offered us onions but at that point I was pissed. Now I'll explain why: my husband and I are former chefs and we know how brandied mushrooms are properly made as well as croutons and dressing. All I wanted was my mushrooms to be cooked off, it would have removed the bitter taste and been perfect with my steak. Instead I got a bogus excuse and our waitress didn't come back until we were ready for the check. My husband enjoyed his chicken Alfredo but the meal was ruined by poor service and undercooked brandy. Pretty disappointing considering how well it started. We will not return.

Try the clam chowder. You'll be glad you did. Also had the turkey club and local beer. All very good.
