I was very disturbed by what I saw at Thatzza Pizza on Saturday, April 18 around 8 pm. I have since received a call from the San Juan County public health inspector who equally as concerned and disturbed as I was (his exact words were "if I were you I'd have told the cashier to take his pizza and shove it") and threatened to take the restaurant's permit away if they did not provide employee training. The owners response on to me on Google Maps confirms that their employee was eating pepperonis and sticking fingers in her mouth while preparing a customer's pizza. As I was paying for my pizza, I witnessed a young female employee stick her fingers into her mouth and then into the pepperoni tub as she made a customer's pizza. I saw her continue to eat pepperonis as she prepared the pizza. I pointed this out to the clerk (a 20-30 year old male with a dark ponytail) and I said it was inappropriate and disgusting for an employee to be touching the customer's food while sticking her fingers into her mouth, and eating, and that I don't want someone else's spit on my food. The man got visibly upset and nasty, and said in a whiny tone that she wasn't doing anything wrong and it's totally fine to have your fingers in your mouth while making food to sell to the public. I was shocked at his response - it's one thing for a child to make a silly mistake while cooking, another for a grown man to not see the obvious health hazard here. We paid for our pizza and left (to avoid making a scene, and to support the employees working who were innocently doing their jobs), but threw it away out of fear of retribution since the cashier was so nasty to me. I've filed a complaint with both the city of Monticello and the San Juan County public health department. If employees are willing to be that disgusting in public in front of customers, I shudder to think of how they behave when out of sight. read more

I just had their weekday special which was a 14 inch pizza plus one topping. Good price. Very good crust. Good flavor. This is a good store. It as good as most big city pizza places. If you want Pizza, I recommend coming here. They have other food as well, but I can't comment on it. I got the pizza and took it back to the hotel room. It looks like a decent place to sit there and eat it, but certainly not a place for a date. read more

TL:DR - Fine for small town pizza, nothing special. Pizza is thinner, so a 14' won't feed more than two people. Wings were also just alright. --------------------------------------------------------------- Honestly, there's not much to it, it's unspectacular small town pizza that's still better than frozen. The crust was soft and doughy (not in a bad way) and I wish it was a bit crispier. It was hand-tossed and so relatively thin. Cheese was pretty solid with subtle hints of parmesan. I like a saucy pizza, and to me this place was undersauced by quite a bit. We got a 14' and it easily fed my partner and I and while we weren't hungry after wards, we definitely weren't full either. We also got some Frank's hot wings. They were ok, bit heavy on the vinegar flavor, but that's all frank I suppose. The 1/2 lb portion got us about 5 un-breaded wings on the smaller end in case you were wondering. We did take out, and typical pizza joint with high school workers, half standing around chatting with friends, but service was prompt and friendly. Another pizza shop has opened its doors in Monticello, Utah, Thatzza Pizza, owned by Tom and Linda Wigginton. Tom and Linda are not new to pizza making, having once owned a pizza shop in St. George, Utah. They are a friendly couple, don't mind chatting and show pride in their shop. When I first called in an order, Linda answered the phone in a cheery tone and didn't mind my questions regarding how menu items were prepared. Menu items are available for pickup or delivery; and they also offer their own version of the "Take and Bake" pizza for baking in your own home, whether immediately, or frozen for later use. Thatzza Pizza is located on a corner; the interior is primarily taken up with food preparation equipment and counter space; there is no space available for indoor seating. I do wonder if, with warmer weather settling in, there is any plan to set up tables and chairs outside. The Chicken Wings are baked in the oven; however there was no problem in getting them cooked longer, so they would crisp up more. Unfortunately, baked chicken wings do not allow for the skin to render the fat, giving them a gummy, slimy texture. Thatzza Pizza's wings were not too bad with the extra cooking time; still not as crispy as we like them, but not gummy or slimy either. The barbecue sauce was indeed very mild and did not overpower the flavor of the chicken itself. The Personal Size Cheese Pizza was typical of what I call "Utah Style" pizza; thick and bready, much like a focaccia dough. While there was a nice amount of cheese, I thought the sauce was lost between the large amount of dough and cheese. The bottom crust was underdone to my personal liking with pizza; I much prefer browned and crispy. Thinner dough cooked at a high temperature (450F to 500F) would achieve this effect; but this is more New York style than Utah style. My husband had the Personal Size Veggie Pizza; while he agreed that the crust was too thick and bready, he did like the combination of vegetables, cheese and sauce. The amounts and flavors complimented each other well. Rating Thatzza Pizza, we would give it a C+ which means we're willing to go back and try other items on the menu for a fair taste testing. That is one of the downfalls of being a "pizza snob", I'm rough on my pizza ratings. Try out Thatzza Pizza for yourself though and give them your own fair taste testing. *UPDATE* June 12, 2012 - I was able to finally see how they bake their pizzas; in a tabletop convection oven. While this may minimize baking time of a 16 inch pizza (8-9 minutes), it by all means does not have the capability to brown and crisp a pizza crust. My firm recommendation to Thatzza Pizza, if they truly want to make authentic and outstanding pizza, is to invest in a real pizza oven that can provide the proper high temperatures required to crisp and brown pizza dough. read more

Ended up at a hotel nearby after a backpacking adventure in Canyonlands. They had free delivery and were recommended by the hotel, so I went for it. Wings were above average. Pizza was pretty good. Definitely happy with the order and would order again if I was in the area. Oh, and it was delivered to my hotel room door in ~25 minutes! read more

We ordered from here because they had free delivery to our hotel with any purchase over $10. Ended up getting a pepperoni pizza, some garlic cheese toast, and a half pound of wings. All were great. Pizza had a crisp, golden crust. Wings were baked but had great flavor. The cheese toast was absolutely amazing. We would absolutely order it again when passing through town. read more

We had a quick pit-stop in Monticello when driving from Moab to Monument valley. We decided to get a pizza from this joint. We had a "meat lover" pizza. Thick crust and not enough toppings. Came here as we were driving thru. It was a late night order before checking into our hotel. The staff was super friendly and happily answered our questions. This is not a dine in restaurant.
