I'm glad there's a solid Thai restaurant in town. I ordered the Khao Soi with chicken and tofu. It's a curry noodle soup featuring soft noodles in a flavorful curry broth, topped with crispy noodles. My meal also came with a plate of white rice and a small bowl of broth with rice. I enjoyed the Khao Soi overall. The curry was flavorful and buttery. However, it was a little more watery than I prefer, and while it was good, it wasn't quite as good as the best Khao Soi I've had elsewhere. I also would have preferred traditional egg noodles instead of the wider white noodles used here. One thing I would have liked to see was more vegetables. There was certainly no shortage of carbs--I ended up with both rice and noodles left over. The small bowl of broth was tasty, but I'm not used to having rice soaking in it. Personally, I would have preferred vegetables as a substitute for the rice since the dish already came with plenty of carbs. We were in Richmond to attend an art award ceremony and stopped here for dinner. There were good things and not so good things. It wasn't busy, there were 2 other tables. When we (5 of us) first sat down we waited about 10 minutes without a server stopping by so I went to the front and asked that we get 2 crab ragoon plates. Another 10 minutes later and I again went to the front and asked if our server would stop by and take our order. (Still no crab ragoon) Once we ordered our dinner the crab ragoon came out. There was 4 to a plate, well prepared and delicious, Next the dinners. First one plate. Then more than 10 minutes later 2 more but delivered without rice. Next one more plate and the rice for the other 2. I had the red curry with tofu. A really good curry but the tofu was mushy. My SO had the red curry with chicken. We both ordered a level 4 out of 5 and it was what I would call mild. It's an independent restaurant that makes very good Thai food but it lacks in servicing. read more

I've been roaming through three Ohio counties in search of top notch Thai, and who knew my five star experience would be found across the state line in this unassuming, homey little gem. Dimly lit and quaintly decorated, there are two dining rooms and the word was to sit wherever you like. Beer and wine is on offer (low prices!) so I had a Singha and my husband had merlot. Ice water was provided. We started with the appetizer sampler- stellar crab Rangoon with actual visible crab and scallion in the gooey cream cheese center, very crispy outside. Chicken satay was done perfectly, crisp out and tender in and quite flavorful. The dumplings took first prize, so juicy and packed with filling and flavor. Chicken pad Thai was excellent, very thin noodles and plenty of peanut. Also very satisfied with pork Spicy Basil. Full of flavor. All dishes were beautifully presented on charming dinnerware. We both chose 3/5 spice level, and I would say they used a light hand. Next time I'm kicking it up to level 4. Portions were extremely generous. Leftovers were packaged up for us. Got a Drunken Noodles to go, too. We interacted with a two-person staff, both women sharing serving duty, one as hostess and apparently the other doing the cooking. Both very pleasant and polite and cheerfully answered questions. They do have red curry. There is a rather funny misprint under Curries on the menu, so if you see something about salad with Italian dressing just ignore it! It is accurate on the takeout menu. Seems to me the dining room on the left when you enter will be more comfortable. The main one got a little loud with so much takeout traffic coming in. They do a brisk business with that (great food at very reasonable prices) but give me table service every time. Plus something to go. Will be back soon. read more

Thai Thara is a fabulous and authentic Thai restaurant. I am addicted to their wonton soup. I get the big bowl, just for myself. Ingredients are fresh and the wontons are delicious and perfectly seasoned. You can choose your spice level. I also really like their drunken noodles. read more

The good: Really great food, including lettuce wraps, crab Rangoon, curries, soups, fresh vegetables. Lunch specials. The cuisine is all sooooo good... light and fresh. Today tried the tangerine chicken: was perfectly sweet, but not cloying. Not heavy and the chicken was lovely too: fried lightly. You will want the people to become your friends, they are so kind! The service is punctual but not overbearing. The not so good: Not very special ambiance, though they did just try to update. No longer offering drive-through pickup, unfortunately. The bathroom door seems very dirty. And they do use the detestable, non-eco Styrofoam. Terrible hours: they have a very short lunch then close, and open back up at dinner. Not open Sundays. What a pleasant and lovely surprise to discover in my hometown! Ordered takeout for the first time last night, and it was delightful. As I waited for my food, the very kind server even brought me a Thai iced tea to enjoy because it was so hot outside. I have never gotten anything other than the Pad Thai, because it's so good I don't want to go with anything else. I have went with many people and know many others that say you can't go wrong with any option. The price of the food is very fair and you get some great portions. The vibe and feel of the restaurant is great as well, dimly lit, but very clean and orderly. This restaurant reminds me of Andre Iguodala. The only thing keeping them from 5 stars happens right off the bat. They have a drive thru and a menu board from a previous restaurant like most drive thrus. They don't use the menu board. There's no walk-in. You have to know where the menu is in advance, drive up to the window, order and then turn around and go wait in the parking lot for a few minutes. Then, you come back through and get your food and go back to the parking lot to eat. The exit of the drive thru is a hard 90 degree angle and several people had to make it a 3 point turn. With all of that out of the way, though, service is quick and the menu is expansive. I ordered the pad kee mao and went for spicy level 5. They even gave me a free soup. It was excellent. The meal is already pretty big for lunch so I was extra stuffed. When I first opened the pad kee mao, the spice hit my nose and was strong. I actually got a little concerned about choosing level 5 at this point. Fortunately, the taste was much more of a moderate spice level. It was great and, best of all, I managed to avoid splattering on my shirt or car. read more

Excellent Thai Food...and we are picky! We stopped in here for a take-away, while traveling through. The exterior "look" may shy people away....but DON'T shy away... We entered and were greeted by the nicest person. We ordered the yellow curry-chicken and drunken noodles-pork, both at a Level 3 heat, out of 5. Both dishes were fabulous, better than Thai we've gotten in urban metropolitan cities. The heat scale is dead on! The 3 was spicy, making us slow down our consumption to cool down a bit. I am glad I finally got to try the food at Thai Thara. It was a couple of hits and misses. First time, I got there, I found out that it was carry out only. The next time, it was already closed (after 8pm, Yelp said they close at 9pm). Good stuffs: - An oasis in Richmond, IN. I believe that this is the only Thai food place in town - Good assortment of choices on menu. - Food was of good enough quality and tasty! - Excellent service. We had to wait a bit longer than anticipated for our food and they threw in a Thai iced tea which was great for our wait. Thai iced tea was legit! Not so good stuffs: - It was not easy finding their menu online. I had to rely on Yelp photos and that takes away from the experience. - The dishes are decent but not quite there. Panang chicken tasted abit peanut butterish and the minced chicken in special was a bit too minced to be eaten. Will come again! But perhaps #3 is too mild for me, might bump up the spice level to #5 read more

This was an interesting surprise. I haven't seen Thai food in Richmond since the late 1970s when a Thai-Chinese couple took over the old A&W root beer stand on South 8th and E Streets. That was a 3 wok carry out operation and the food was spicy enough to melt your ears. Their only drawback was that the girls to deliver the food to the cars were no longer there. Durn. I've eaten a lot of Thai food since then. This had good flavour and that's the most important thing to me. I was a bit surprised to see that they'd taken over the Power House building and the one wall is still very much concrete block inside. I was greeted by two very friendly women and taken to a table near the back. They have several tables, both for 2 and for 4 chairs but it's not spacious. First, I asked for Thai iced coffee. I was shocked that they didn't have any. I have instant packets at home. They had tea, so I tried that. I don't remember iced tea ever being so sweet. It almost seemed as they were going for bubble tea without the beads. I mentioned several times that I'd like Prik King and it didn't register with them. Usually, I get a response of "Oh, yes!" or "No, we don't have that" but never a blank stare and a smile. In any case, we went through the menu together after I mentioned a peanut allergy. I ended up ordering "Spicy Green Bean", which was...wait for it...Prik King. These people aren't Thai, although the cook might be. Maybe, they've got that old couple from the other place chained to the stove. The way she pronounced "Padang" also leads me to believe that they're not Malaysian, who might know how to make Thai food. Their spiciness scale was from 1 to 5. I ordered at level 4. Well, it's only a 4, if the scale is from 1 to 10. I have much spicier food at home. However, the flavour was excellent, and a soup came along with the entree, which considering the bill, was a good thing. $10.90 for one person is a bit much, though the tea put me over the top. The only reason for the "missing star": pretty please bring back the soft and fresh spring rolls (rice paper, noodles, Thai basil, general deliciousness). First off, can I say just how ridiculously HAPPY it makes me to have a Thai eatery in Richmond? Now we have Thai and Vietnamese to choose from when I visit my parents? Mind blown. We opted to attack the menu family style with an order of Tom Yum (large portion is perfect for family style in a bigger pot), spicy green beans (served with rice), tofu red curry (perfection - and also served with white rice), and a fried chicken dish loaded with veggies whose name I cannot recall. All dishes were fresh, flavor-packed and made my tummy smile. The restaurant is clean and staff is friendly. I can only hope the folks in Richmond learn what Thai food is all about and jump on the bandwagon to support this local business. I know my family will! read more

Just like Brian J. and Valerie R. said, the service is very attentive and friendly. I ordered spicy green beans with chicken as my protein choice, at a spice level of 3. Green beans were fresh and crisp, chicken meat white and tender. The sauce had a nice kick to it, I was definitely needing some tissues to stop my runny nose. Had one of my friend's crab rangoons, heck, you can't go wrong with deep fried cream cheese! LOL. Admittedly, rangoons are more American than they are Thai, but still very good. Chicken Satay with peanut sauce was another favorite. Tasted my other friend's panang curry dish -which I will DEFINITELY order next time, that was delish! Haven't tried any of their desserts yet because their entrees are so generously portioned, there really isn't much room at the end. Excellent service, great food and very reasonable prices! I ordered the spicy noodles (Pad Kee Mao) at heat level 4. The lunch portion is $7.25 and comes with a soup and a Ragoon. They give you a HUGE amount of food for $7.25, enough that you could probally split it between two people. All the veggies where bright, crispy and tasty. The rice was nice and light, and not too sticky. I didn't really care for the Thai iced tea; way too sweet for me and it had a funky after taste. I was underwelmed with the heat of this dish; The heat scale is 1-5 I ordered a 4, and it was what I'd call almost warm. Next time I'll ask for a 7... Went there for the first time today. It definitely won't be the last! I took my parents who are from TN and felt the need to apologize before going in just on the fact that the outside looks like a dump lol. But the food speaks for itself! I got mixed vegetables with tofu and it comes with steamed rice and a bowl of chicken noodle soup. I don't eat animal products, sugar, or oil so I told the waitress and she said oh well you give it to baby there, it good for her. She should have offered a vegan option but I didn't push it because I already asked for my dish to have no oil. They complied and it was delicious. The vegetables were cooked just right. I like them on the crispy side. You can choose your spicy level from 1-5. I chose 4. When I first started eating it I thought it wasn't hot at all. A few more bites into it and my lips were burning! I found this restaurant via Yelp when I was here in town for a class. I ordered the yellow Currey with Chicken medium hot. My food arrived quickly. The rice was perfectly cooked. My currey was full of chicken and very flavorful. The spice level was on the milder side, I would have liked some additional pepper to add to it for a bit more heat. The ice tea I had with my dinner was fresh brewed and perfect with my dinner. If I had another night in town, I would go back again for dinner. read more

Stopped hear on a road trip to Chicago. This was a much better lunch option than fast food and it was definitely worth the two extra miles from the highway and about 10 minutes extra for table service. We actually got our food quite fast on Saturday for lunch. There were other customers and I was impressed with how quickly we got our food. The panang curry, dragon noodles were great and the thai fried rice was pretty good. It tastes like what I imagine homemade thai food would be like. Pricing was very reasonable for lunch about 8$ an entree and quite big for lunch sized portion. The hostess/waitress and maybe owner was patient and helpful. Wow, this place is so good. I've been going their for years I absolutely love it, I've never tried something I didn't like. I think it's probably one of the best places to eat in Richmond. They are always quick and friendly and have a great system for picking up food to minimize contact! I'd recommend ordering the drunken noodles, sesame chicken, or the spicy basil, but honestly you can't go wrong no matter what. read more

I can't believe it took me so long to visit this place. I LOVE Thai food and was convinced there was no way the food here in Richmond would be comparable to other places I've visited. I couldn't have been more wrong! This is probably my favorite restaurant in Richmond. I've had pad Thai (my favorite) that is better, but it is still really good. Our favorites are the three spice chicken, pad see ew (soy sauce noodles), and yellow curry. And the Thai tea is spectacular! This definitely a gem in this city and I'm now a loyal customer! read more
