We happened to pass by this Indian restaurant and noticed its sign advertising the buffet, so we decided to give it a try. We're glad we did! Everything we tried was delicious. The food tasted authentic, and every entrée was well prepared. They offer a great variety of curries, all of which were rich, flavorful, and satisfying! The lamb curry was especially good. The meat was tender and delicious. My only wish is that there had been a little more lamb in it! I also tried the garlic naan. It was good, but it wasn't quite as good as the best garlic naan I've ever had, which was served steaming hot, extra buttery, and packed with a strong garlic flavor. The complimentary mango drink was a nice touch and tasted great. They also offer ice cream for dessert. I tried the Campfire S'mores flavor as well as the Chocolate Brownie Pretzel flavor, and both were a perfect way to end the meal. The restaurant itself is nicely decorated and even has what appears to be a private dining area in the back. The weekday lunch buffet is available until 2:30 p.m., and on weekends it's served until around 4:00 p.m. The weekend buffet is $16 per person. The buffet is a great value considering the quality and variety of the food. Overall, we really enjoyed our meal and will definitely be back! read more

First time here. Food/Drink: Entrees were amazing, everything tasted fantastic. The flavors and the smells were intoxicating! I had the Goat Vindaloo, and paneer. Bread and Apps: The garlic naan pizza was crazy good, mmmm mmmm! Dinning Area: Pretty large, and open. Prices: Relatively cheap. 2 Small appetizer, 3 entree, and a 3 drinks I got away for $100. Parking: Plenty of space, private lot. Bathrooms: Bathrooms were clean and smaller in size. Atmosphere: During the weekend Dinner rush, pretty busy, but not unmanageable. Steady overall. We have been enjoying the weekend buffet at Gulzar's in richmond for several years. Today (October 12th) my wife and I took the 45 minute drive to have a meal and it was shockingly bad. The Pakoras were old and dry. The curried were very much like leftovers which had been warmed up often and with little meat. Even the condiments were old and stale. I am not sure what has happened to the quality of the food. We will not be coming again. We heard the same complaints from two other tables around us. So sad to see a good restaurant becoming so bad. Yummy in my tummy! I love spicy food and buffets! Gulzars is a great place to eat, but I do wish the buffet was bigger and provided more entree type options. The chicken Tikka Masala is great and chicken curry-but it would be nice to have more variety and options on the buffet. Also would love to see a couple desserts thrown in there to try. Plus different types in Naan ect instead of just one. I love that kids eat free, but a couple more kid options on the buffet wood be great! I also love the spicy pickles!!!! The hot pickles are spicy and are very different than any pickle I've ever ate! They also have limited hours and the buffet is only open for lunch.. it would be great if it were open for dinner hours too! The service is always fast and friendly. It's a small quaint place and the cultural music adds to the ambiance, and is kept an appropriate volume to were you can still easily talk and hear one another. So 10 days on the road and one cuisine we have not had was Indian. Given this area had mainly chain restaurants this seemed like an oasis so we popped in. The place was almost empty on a Wednesday night. The staff was very friendly though at times inattentive considering there were never more than six customers in the restaurant at their busiest. The price for a regular beer (not Indian) was very cheap at $3.50 even for a Stella. We ordered the chicken Shashi Korma and the chicken gobi (with cauliflower). Both had good flavors and the hottest level we requested. The nan and raita were solid. The prices were typical and the decor very nice. Recommended! read more

Namaste! Gulzar's is one of my local favorites. We had a great experience here today which is usually the case - realized I'd never yet reviewed it. When I think of Gulzar's the first thing that comes to mind is the heady aroma of rich exotic spices that hits you and sets your mouth to watering as soon as you walk in the door. The dining room is comfortable, with booths, muted wall tones and strategically placed Indian artwork. There's a second dining room for overflow or large groups, as well as a patio dining option. All the classic Indian preparations are here - korma, curries, tikka masala, vindaloo, and more, with lamb, goat, chicken, seafood, or vegetarian. Biryani dishes, tandoori chicken, melt-in-your-mouth naan fresh out of the oven. The chutneys and raita are perfect too. The food quality is top notch, and priced accordingly - and so worth it. You can get Kingfisher and at least one other Indian beer here too and they are amazingly tasty and refreshing! The spice level option is 1 to 10. In my opinion they use a heavy hand on the spice, so if you're not sure start with a lower number and they will bring you some spice on the side, if requested, if you decide you want to kick it up a bit. I like spicy food but the level 5 killed me once. I usually stick with 3 or 4 depending on the dish. The waiters are very helpful and will answer all your questions, and they'll make what you want even if not specifically listed on the menu. We did the weekend buffet once, which is a good opportunity to try different things you may not have had before. It's great for buffet fans but you're unlikely to find goat vindaloo on offer, so we're sticking with the table service and getting exactly what we want. They also offer a meal for two option vegetarian and non-veg) that includes soup and dessert (Aloo Gobi) which is a great deal and huge amount of food - always enough for a second meal at home. The staff are all an extended Indian family and are very kind and welcoming. We have had a couple of service issues in the past, likely due to not enough workers on hand - but nothing to lose a star over. Today all was perfect. Highly recommended! read more

This is hands-down my family's favorite place! The food is consistently delicious. We eat here at least every other week. AJ and crew are amazing. Whether you order off the menu or do the lunch buffet you will not be disappointed. And unlike other places, the take out is just as delicious as eating in the restaurant....but I recommend eating in the restaurant so you can get the curry tacos or pizza. Another great find in my hometown! Have been meaning to try Gulzars for ages, ordered via Doordash for dinner delivery last night. Between three of us, we shared the chicken tikka masala (spice level 5), chicken coconut curry (spice level 2), Kashmiri naan, paneer pakora and raita, and had enough left over for one more good serving. The curry and the tikka masala -- delicious, although I wish the curry had been one notch spicier and the tikka one notch less spicy. Level 5 definitely brought some heat. I like it a little spicy, but can't imagine going above that and still being able to actually enjoy the food! The naan and the pakora were also good, but we didn't care for the raita, it was way too liquid with pieces of onion floating in it. Was expecting a thicker, creamier consistency. All in all, though, great Indian food on par with what you'd expect to find in a much bigger city. Would definitely order again. (I believe lunch is buffet service only if you want to go and sample a bunch of different things at once.) read more

When you walk into this place you're greeted with the most wonderful and fragrant smells of amazing Indian cooking! And then you're welcomed with genuine and beautiful smiles from the family that works at the restaurant. And you notice how inviting and clean the restaurant is - so happy to be back here again! This is my second visit to this restaurant, it's on the top of my list of places to visit when I'm in the area. We were promptly seated and given nice big glasses of ice water which was very welcomed. It's obvious that everyone at this family restaurant really cares about you as a customer and wants you to really enjoy your food and dining experience. I started off with the chicken soup - delicious subtle flavors, followed by chicken wings. I had no idea about what to expect about the wings in an Indian restaurant, but they were wonderful - cooked in a tandoor oven, tender, moist, and with a unique and delicious coating. For the main course I had chicken tikka masala with a side of Kashmiri naan - my favorite type of naan! The restaurant really tries hard to accommodate the level of heat that you want on each dish. My wife and I have eaten at a variety of Indian restaurants throughout the United States. Indians tell me that the vast majority of these are Punjabi dishes. This place is no different. It's Punjabi, with some of the traditional dishes we're used to, but with many we've never experienced. And it was SUPERB. That's saying a lot. Indian cuisine is often rated as the most delicious food on the planet, an assessment I agree with, but this place takes it to a new level. Today's lunch buffet placed a very close second to the best Indian meal we'd ever had, which was a catered meal of Gujarati cuisine served at a high school graduation party for one of our former martial arts students. Both meals were skillfully liberal with spices, blending them masterfully into dishes that set our eyes rolling. Have you ever had such an experience? You take a bite and your spouse or companion registers your reaction? A moment of stunned immobility before an uncontrolled moan of pleasure...if not an expletive of appreciation...issues forth. "Oh. My. God." We're on our way to a wedding in Columbus, Ohio. We may hit this place on the way back, and we'll tell all the Hoosier attendees to consider it on their way home. My favorite place to eat ! Gulzars has super friendly staff that are very helpful to those that have never had Indian food before . Now I like my food spicier than a lot of people and the great thing about gulzars is that I can get it spicier than I can take AND it still tastes amazing ! FYI the spicy scale goes up to 10 but that's just a base line , I have ordered as high as a 25 (that will light you up !) If your a spicy lover try the bullet naan ! We loved every bite of the vegetarian feast. It was 2 samosas, rice, naan, and 4 entrees with malai kofta, paneer, daal, and potatoes as the star of each respective dish. We even got 2 gulab jamun for dessert to share. There were enough leftovers for two carryout containers so we certainly got our fill. My only complaint was the food was not nearly as spicy as was promised. I asked for a compromise for myself who likes wickedly hot food and my mother who likes medium, and neither of us found the result remotely spicy. I ended up asking for extra chili powder three different times and it still wasn't very hot. I know I'm white but when I ask for hot, I want it to be HOT!! I love this place! I've been for the buffet and it's good if it's your first time coming in or aren't sure what you want but if you have had Indian food before order off the menu! I love the Chicken Tikka Masala, Chicken Vindaloo, butter chicken and garlic naan! I try to get something new each time I go but these have been favorites for sure! I always get about a 6/7 heat and I love spicy so I feel like this is a nice level without it being to much. Our servers are always really kind and attentive. And it's a nice little atmosphere. Accidentally stumbled upon this place in Richmond and really liked it. Butter Chicken and Tikka Masala were good, though there wasn't an awesome amount of chicken in the dish. My new favorite local restaurant. Food was well spiced and fresh. I will say they are heavy handed on the heat. But some heat is never a problem. We had both the chicken and chickpea tacos for starters and they were flavorful. I had the mango milkshake and my husband had the mango lassi. So good! The buffet is excellent and runs till 4P. Great since I get started late. We took our little granddaughter and they had some beautifully spiced chicken nuggets. No heat whatsoever which is what she needs. I've ordered the spiced tea and that is real good too. The cashier said these were his grandfather's recipes. You can tell the food was made with care.
