This was my last meal in Maui and we made sure to eat locally the 3 days we spent in Paia. Therefore, I didn't see the menu beforehand but it was close to our Air Bnb so we gave it a try. We got there about 1.5 hours before they closed and once we arrived, it took a while for someone to come out from the back. We then realized they were getting many to-go pick up orders back to back so it seemed like business was booming for them. Eventually, our server did hand us the menus with the specials for the day. It's a very small restaurant with very limited seating indoors but we were the only patrons so it didn't feel crammed. There's $5 parking directly in front or you can park a bit farther away for some free spots. For starters we split the spring rolls, pretty good nothing extraordinary. I got the Tom Yum soup with chicken and my partner got the pineapple fried rice with shrimp. Honestly, we could've gotten away with splitting the second meal because the serving was way bigger than we expected. Nonetheless, the soup was delicious and had so many different vegetables in it that I lost track. What I enjoyed most about the fried rice was it contained browned cashews and I think that really sold it for me. I like crunchy textures like nuts and i feel that it balanced out the usual softness of the shrimp. It seems like a lot of people don't dine in, rather they just come to pick up their food and head out. Either way, I'd recommend trying it out if you like Thai Food. Walked in, lady was very rude. I asked if they were still open and she told me and the kids to sit right there. I didn't quite understand so I asked, "excuse me?" She again, told me to go sit in a corner with my kids and disappeared for literally 6 minutes. The place was empty and there were ants on the table. When she finally brought the water and took our order.. it just didn't feel right. I quickly ran after her and said we are going to actually cancel and left. My wife and I enjoy Thai food on the mild side. We started with the coconut shrimp and shared the Massaman curry, which was cooked to perfection. There was an abundance of vegetables and chicken. My Thai iced tea was flavored to my taste. The service was friendly and efficient. When we travel and are in a location for several days, we enjoy finding a local Thai restaurant. We have eaten here on previous visits and were not disappointed. We plan to return during our April visit to the Islands. read more

First New Chiang Mi in Hilo, now Thai Spice. The Thai people and Hawaiian ingredients together are perfection. The combination is better than actual Thailand, Thai Town in Hollywood, or Thai in the Bay Area. Opt for the creamy panang that is reminiscent of a now closed Indonesian spot my wife and I were obsessed with when we lived in Berkeley. Start with crab rangoons that instead of those little puffs are you familiar with, here they are like fried eggs rolls stuffed with cream cheese. Good lord they are delicious. The lady working here is a sweetheart, great service and so humble. As we dined in so many locals came in and out for pick up. The people know Thai Spice is the truth. It's mainly a carry out spot, but we decided to eat here. We ordered Basil fried rice, Yellow curry and white rice two bowls also the Thai ice tea. The freshness of basil in fried rice was flavorful. The curry had great coconut flaovor to it and aroma was very refreshing. The quantity was decent. Service was adequate and no issues there. Everything was served hot and beautifully plated. I am writing this after our second visit. We ordered: Pad Kee Mao Panang Curry (rich flavorful, sauce and so tasty!) Tom Yum Soup Papaya Salad (wow, exceptional flavor!) Grilled Snapper with Ginger Snapper (special) I forgot a few photos because everything was so delicious we jumped in and I forgot! My friend and I got the fried Thai spring rolls, and it was crispy and not super greasy. The sauce also had the right amount of sweetness. We also got Thai ice tea, and it was delicious. It was a full big glass of Thai iced tea, and we were almost considering buying another one to go. For our entree, we got pad ke Mao and crispy fish with sweet and sour. You can pick the spice level that works for you. We both picked 2 since we were traveling the next day. It had just the right amount of kick to it. Pad ke Mao was very flavorful and delicious. Had a bizarre experience. Tonight was told they are only seating tables for tourists, not locals. The people before and after us got a table simply because they were tourists. Locals were take out only. All this during a time when tourism is down 90% because of the fires. After pointing out how unfair this tourist only policy was, a table was offered. There was no line, this all happened at 4:45 in the afternoon! Have never experienced anything like this at any restaurant anywhere in the world. To discriminate against local customers simply makes no sense on any level. Local money spends just the same as tourist money. Adding to the unusual situation, was asked to pay upfront and told that they would only drop off the dish of food at the table but provide no waiting service even though the 2 "tourist" tables received normal wait service. Have never experienced such an utterly misconceived and poorly implemented restaurant experience anywhere. Locals and tourists ought to be treated equally. No exceptions. All that said, the food was delicious. 4 star food. 1 star service. read more

As we strolled through the streets of Pai'a my wife and I decided we wanted a break from the standard fare we had been enjoying in Hawai'i and opted for a return to our favourite cuisine - Thai. We stumbled into this cute, and really tiny, restaurant on the edge of town and oh my, wow! A simple menu, packed with flavours! Finally tried this spot after all these years. As with any Paia establishment, the parking can be tricky. However, at 1130am on a Friday, I was able to find a parking space right in front of the shop. The place is super small and seems more practical for takeout. It appears that only about 18-20 people max could be seated, and that would be awfully cramped. In terms of food, everything was great. My client and I had the yellow chicken and mahi mahi curry, along with sticky and brown rice. The mild curry was a bit spicy for being called "mild." So just a heads up. I enjoyed it though. I also ordered a Thai iced tea which was good as well. Overall, no complaints really. Just a bit cramped inside and kind of hot if you're seated by the window (couldn't feel any AC). I wouldn't really have the need to go back, just due to location for me. Although, I'd recommend it to anyone in the area looking for good Thai food for take out. read more

It's hard to find food on Maui that isn't touristy, but Thai Spice is a solid bullseye. Not the best Thai food I've ever had, but definitely some of the best non-mainland Thai I've ever had. The pumpkin curry was everything it needed to be -- spicy, rich, and amply portioned. The service was fast and the folks here are gracious. Mostly a take-out place, which is exactly what we did. Prices are reasonable for Maui -- $20 ish per entree. I do wish they'd include rice with entrees; it's extra, and many Thai places include it as part of the deal. I wouldn't get on a plane for this place, but, since I was already staying in Paia, it was a solid choice. read more

I've been here a few times, there's only four or five tables and sometime only two employees for cooking taking orders and waiting. The owner has been concerned that service would be slow, although every time I would say the service was fine and food came out at an average speed. The food however, is not average. Everything I've eaten here is exceptional and definitely better than average. We had amazing food experiences during our time in Maui, but unfortunately Thai Spice missed the mark. I was disappointed with the service and the food quality. We ordered several dishes including Panang curry, spring rolls, fish, beef house noodles (which were just drunken noodles so not sure why there was a separate "house noodle" option?) and Thai teas. The tea had a powdery taste, the fish tasted like it had been previously frozen, and the noodles were not the fresh lad nar noodles that we experienced at other Thai restaurants we tried in Maui. We also had to pay separately for rice to be served with our curry dish and fish entree. I've never had to pay for rice to go along with an entree or curry dish at a Thai restaurant. That was surprising and disappointing given how pricey the entrees were to begin with. And the server was possibly new, but could not answer questions we had about the menu. Plus the seating was so tight and the party of 6 who were seated by us moved their table even closer to us so we were blocked in. Overall, not a great experience. Would not recommend. read more

My friend and I came through here after hiking the bamboo forest trail. We had worked up an appetite and were craving Thai food. Service here was great - super friendly and quick. Parking was a bit of a nightmare. We had a rental car and this place is in a tiny plaza with only a few spaces. We tried to find street parking in downtown Paia but it was impossible. Wound up having to pay to park in a lot nearby. We shared the fresh rolls to start, which were very tasty. Super fresh - they had avo, carrots, sprouts and cabbage inside. The peanut sauce just tasted like peanut butter. I liked the mix of that with the sweet and spicy sauce. We both got the pad Thai with tofu and it was not a normal pad Thai. The sauce had a tomato based sauce, which I've never had before with Thai food. It wasn't bad, but was a bit unexpected. They also use a soft tofu here, which I didn't mind. Lots of veggies in the pad Thai, which I always like. Prices were super reasonable. Only a few tables inside but they moved pretty quick. read more
