Thai Princess is a small but elegant restaurant. The decor is dimly lit wih warm browns with a dark laminate wood floor. It's amazing considering the previous restaurant to occupy the space -- Scalliwags Fish and Chips. The owners redid everything, from the ceiling to the walls, to the floors. It easily has the best ambiance of any Thai restuarant in the Lansing area. Service was prompt, our server did not have the best english, but refilled our water several times and boxed up left overs at the end of the meal. We started with the Thai Salad, which was pleasant with sprouts, carrots, daikon , cold fried tofu and an excellent warm peanut dressing on the side. The chicken in the pad thai had a pleasing charred flavor betraying the hot wok it was cooked in. Overall however the pad thai was too mild for my taste, lacking spice, peanuty sauce or a hint of fish sauce I was expecting. The portion was huge however and the noodles were cooked perfectly, not a greasy lump like Taste of Thai's. My wife ordered Sam Rod (see photo). She enjoyed it, it even had some exotic green papaya which was a nice touch. She did say she preferred the sauce of Taste of Thai's Sam Rod over this one's. Overall the food was excellent, with modern fresh ingredients just not quite as dynamic as we had hoped. We'll definitely return to try out more of the menu. The prices were spot on, our check with two meals and an appetizer was $24. It's very nice to finally have a Thai Restaurant that's elegant and nice to be in, something that you find in Thai places around the rest of the country. I am told that thai princess is one of the better thai food places around the East Lansing/Okemos area. Solid 3-stars: "A-OK". Pad thai was a difference style then west coast style, where there is an abundance of thai food. Fairly decent, but nothing spectacular that I would go out of my way for. Their 'fresh rolls with shrimp', commonly know as 'spring rolls', although they had that labeled something different, lacked a whole lot of meat. Shrimp was as thinly cut as possible, so hardly worth the $2.50 / roll price. Decor was alright for a tacky thai place, however the tables were horribly small. My knees kept hitting the table when I moved around, which, by the way, was also not bolted down to the floor. Maybe I'm just a little to big to be eating at thai princess... Overall, fairly average eatery, nothing that really amazed me yet from this place. If I was shopping closeby, I may decide to sample other things on their menu, however at this point I wouldn't go out of my way to eat here. read more

Drunken noodles with chicken were delicious, with a slightly sweet n savory sauce, but not as spicy as I would have liked, even though I had asked for it to be spicy. Curry with chicken n potatoes in yellow coconut curry sauce was pretty good as well. Chicken dumplings were good and came with sweet soy sauce for dipping. Crab rangoons were good too n had a decent amount of filling, comes with sweet n sour dipping sauce. Thai iced tea was generic, but Thai lemon tea was better. read more

Was recommended by friends and was so excited, Until i got there...The most rude staff I have ever come in contact with. I won't take it out on their food because it was decent but their portions are not even explainable. So me and my cousin went in for lunch and ordered of the lunch menu, which is visually obvious from the dinner, and clearly told him what we wanted. They came out with two of the same dishes when we ordered two different ones and the order was wrong! Then they charged us for dinner menu prices and told US to make sure to make it clear.....then slammed the check and walked off. I am so disappointed and upset. read more

Wow! I recently moved here from the San Francisco area and honestly didn't have high hopes to find a comparable Thai place here. Everything was amazing! Spring rolls, Tom Kha Gai (i always add extra veggies) , Pad Kee Mow, Papaya Salad (just the right amount of spicy) and had some bites of my friend's curry & some Pad Thai Best place I've found so far in Michigan. I have been eating here on and off since they opened up a few years ago. The last time I went to this restaurant, they failed in such a catastrophic way that I will not return. I came in with 3 friends during the lunch rush on tuesday. It took them over an hour to take our orders and bring my food. It really wasn't my food because they got my order wrong, but I wasn't going to send it back because it had been an hour already. But don't worry, they hadn't finished making my day bad. They brought out our meals one at a time over 40 minutes. One of our party had finished their entree about 30 minutes before the last one received theirs. When we wanted to check out, the lady (I think she is part owner) told us that someone called in sick. She didn't offer to comp the meals or anything. Even if that were true, the service wasn't all that great to begin with, and their entrees are comically small. I recommend steering clear from Thai princess. read more

Thai Princess is one of my favorite Thai Restaurants. This is a family run business. The food is great, which I usually order the dumplings. All of the entrees I have had have been great as well. The atmosphere within the restaurant is very cozy. I have gone a lot after MSU football games and it has never been busy. The only reason I didn't give it a 5/5 is the service is a little slow. The Tom Yum is good, but not worth the money to add shrimp. I added the shrimp and they gave me 2 really small ones. The Pad Thai is decent but the noodles were a bit over cooked. Loved this place! Came on a saturday night with a couple friends and there was no wait. Staff was very friendly and helpful with ordering. We got the tom yum soup to share (L for $8) and I had the yellow curry with chicken ($13). The soup was a little sweeter than I was used to, but very flavorful. The yellow curry was spicy and a good portion for the price. We ended up lingering at the table for a while after we paid, but the staff made sure we had plenty of water refills and never made us feel rushed. I will definitely be back! read more

It was a sunny and warm Tuesday afternoon, my fiancé was craving fried rice, she said, innocently, cutely, what about Thai? I said? Thai? She said, yes did you not hear me, Thai! I said oh yes, Thai. Again this place used to really good when they first opened. READ ON! My recent visit has continued to prove that their food is now very much subpar. The food is no longer consistent! Their ingredients are not lined up with what is on the menu! Due to the fact that Chinese Broccoli is expensive, they are substituting ASPARAGUS, which they cut to look like Chinese Broccoli! You know better to precook the damn carrot before throwing it in to fry it! The carrots are tough and tasteless! Their FLAT NOODLES USED to be FRESH! Now they are just using dried flat noodles in replacement, it taste completely different and the texture is completely different! FIX THIS or else DO NOT ORDER ANY FLAT NOODLES MY FRIENDS! YOU will be disappointed! The DUCK......where do I start.... The FRIED DUCK was soggy...... clearly the person cooking did not have the oil up to the right temperature. I've ordered Thai Princess approx. 6 - 10 times and it has become my default Thai takeout place primarily because it's close and the food is decent, even though it's not sensational. I have never dined in but it looks inviting as the decor is well done with a nice mixture of modern and trendy. As for the food, it is good but nothing great. I've ordered the spicy thai basil on numerous occasions and at different spice levels, but I've never found a seasoning level I've enjoyed. (I promise I'm not Goldilocks and I'm not that picky). But I've ordered it and it's been over-the-top too spicy, or so bland that I just add my own Sriracha sauce to it. I can confirm that this is the case with most of their dishes as the default is quite bland, or as I unflatteringly call it "Michigan spice.' Thai Princess is convenient, they offer the majority of the American-Thai dishes, it's moderately priced, it's good enough, it's lowest common denominator, and I have not found another Thai place exceptionally better so I keep returning. But I can't entirely besmirch Thai Princess, it provides your run of the mill American-Thai food and it's there when you need it. read more

Our first visit, though it's been here a while. I like the decor and light. The wait staff were not exactly warm but were efficient and helpful. I ate Jungle Curry and requested mushrooms to be added. This was very delicious, with just the right ratio of vegetables to broth. It's your basic strip mall Thai place, nothing too out of the ordinary there. I had the coconut noodle with chicken which was pretty good, nice thin noodles and tender chicken. Coconut wasn't overpowering. They didn't ask for a spice level on any of my party's dishes, which I find to be unusual for most Thai places like this. My dish had no spice to it (which is fine for me and expected). We also got some steamed dumplings which were pretty good. The food came out very quickly after we ordered, but we probably sat for maybe 20 minutes without service (despite being seated by staff and given water). It's a very small place so it's hard to understand being overlooked. We also sat for quite a while with finished plates before being offered boxes or checks. I ate here after reading all of the positive reviews and at the recommendation of a coworker. The restaurant itself was very pleasant, the waitstaff was courteous and attentive and there is a 10% cash discount which was very nice. Two of us dined and our dinner consisted of satay, jungle curry, and peanut curry. The portions are small and the jungle curry and peanut curry were both rather bland and lacked any sort of salt. The ingredients were very fresh though and the eggplant in my dish was cooked perfectly. I ordered extra hot, but there still was not very much heat to the dish. The satay was excellent, but a bit pricy at $5.99 for four small skewers. With all of the other options for Thai food in the Lansing area, I probably won't be back. read more

It's always nice to see a new Thai restaurant in the area! The Yelp reviews were so good, and I'd been craving Thai, so we stopped in a few days before Christmas for dinner. I think the interior is really cute - it's not a huge restaurant, but it's cozy and they have some cool decor consisting of glass vases that are lit up and change colors through the evening. We started with the curry puffs, which was a pasty/empanada/samosa like appetizer of spiced chicken in a pastry. They were hot and crispy, and pretty yummy. Then we split Pad Thai, Masaman Curry, and a Mixed Vegetable stir fry. Everything was "fine." I was a little confused about why this place received so many raves, since it seemed quite average to me. I wasn't crazy about the pad thai - I was hoping for stronger flavors. The Masaman curry was tasty, but I've had better incarnations of the dish. The mixed vegetable stir-fry was a pretty generic mix, reminiscent of what you get in Chinese restaurants. It was all satisfying and we finished our meal happy, but I wasn't really taken by anything. We did enjoy learning from one of the women who works there (possibly an owner or cook?) that Thai people use chopsticks for noodles but NOT rice dishes. She thinks it's funny that Americans who want to be "authentic" use chopsticks with rice - she herself said she always uses a fork! People in other countries, China and Japan I suspect, do use chopsticks with rice, but apparently that is not Thai custom! Anyway, I think I've actually had better Thai food in other parts of Lansing, though I forget where, so I probably wouldn't be super eager to return here - it's nice that it's close to home, but other than that it seemed like an average offering. This is just what the area needed. A small, yet sophisticated restaurant with character. Their tagline is "We are the same old Zabb Thai Manhattan, Queens, and Astoria in New York!", which I definitely believe after my experience at Thai Princess. To be honest, I did not particularly feel like Thai this evening, but happened to notice the restaurant driving by. Feeling up for trying something new, after dinner with a friend did not work out, I ended up at Thai Princess looking for a table for 1 at about 6:00pm on a Saturday. The seating is limited, probably 4-5 tables on two walls that can seat 4 and a center row of two 2-tops, plus a single, which is where I sat. I do admit, it wasn't ideal, but I wasn't feeling picky. Atmoshpere I was surprised at the sophistication of the decor, something I have yearned to see in the Greater Lansing area. It was simple, yet chic. The chairs were nice and comfortable, seemingly with a halfway decent leather and with dark-glittery backs, certainly befitting Thai culture with the 'gold' elements. The table was simply set up with a white plate, paper napkin and water glass. It would have been nice to have real cloth napkins, as the paper napkin didn't quite fit with the rest of the decor, but I am giving them the benefit of the doubt that it will be a future upgrade. Due to the small space, every time the door opened, it let in the cold, which is something I think can be remedied. In the meantime, make reservations and ask for something either on the left wall or towards the back. Price The appetizers ran from $3.99 to $7.99, which is hard to justify for a single person dining. That being said, seeing what was served around me, you certainly would be getting enough for the price of the appetizer as all seemed to be sizeable enough to share between 3-4 people. The prices for main entrees is extremely reasonable, most around (or less than) $10, with only very few dishes surpassing the $10 mark. Service The servers/host were very welcoming and warm. Having grown up in restaurants (4-5 restaurants owned by extended/immediate family) and worked in the restaurant industry throughout college, I have a certain tolerance and understanding for waitservice. Being a low-maintenance single diner, I was not often looked after, meaning my glass of water was empty for quite a while until I was ready to leave before being asked to have it re-filled. But, to their defense, there was significant traffic, people around me waiting to be seated and others higher maintenance than I: those asking for specific tables and otherwise being very picky. Welcome to Okemos. It was evident that most of the patrons entering the restaurant had come upon recommendation and they were coming in consistently. Food Starting of with a Thai Iced Tea, which was delicious, I did end up ordering an appetizer: the Fresh Roll, which was essentially a fresh spring roll. It was very nice, large and cut up into four pieces, just right for two or four people as a starter. I didn't finish, nor intended to spoil the remainder of the dinner. For the main entree, I went with the suggestion of my server/host, who I suspect may have been the manager and possibly even one of the owners. I typically love Pannang Curry, but the suggestion was for the Drunken Noodle (Pad Khee-Mhow) and for the meat I opted for chicken. I asked for it 'medium' spicy, though knowing that most mediums in Thai restaurants is pretty spicy, even for me. The dish was excellent. It was simple, yet sophisticated. It was a wonderful blend of sweet and spicy (yet a hint too spicy for me). The spices and elements of the dish seemed almost perfectly balanced as a whole, yet your tastebuds could experience each flavor as it was intended. Summary I do enjoy other Thai restaurants in the area, but this restaurant is on a different level. They seem to have the big-city experience of knowing you can't just be another 'acceptable' restaurant and have the sophistication in their food to keep the people coming. I foresee this restaurant doing well, even for the dinner period, which is not always easy for Asian establishments in this area. It has a chic atmosphere, almost making you forget where you are, the food is sophisticated and unique compared to the pricier establishements in the area, and the price is more than acceptable for the quality you receive. read more

I travel A LOT. Including many trips to Thailand. I can honestly say that Thai Princess is hands down the BEST and most authentic Thai that my wife and I have found. Every time we come to Lansing we make it point to eat here. The food is excellent and the staff is always courteous. You should be able to quench your Thai thirst here.
