    Drunken chicken noodles
    Stephanie M.

We came on a Thursday at around 4:00 pm. I had read multiple reviews where they said the service was slow etc. So I had prepared myself in advance for this and to my surprise it was not slow at all. But that's probably because the restaurant was empty at 4 and there was no one here but us. The food came out really fast and the servers were really attentive. They gave out new plates for appetizers, mains and desserts. They weren't over bearing but when asking for the bill and to order it might be a bit difficult depending on where you are sitting in the restaurant but that's just my take. On to the food! Por pia -$10 - 4 spring rolls with a sweet and sour sauce. Very crispy. Lots of cabbage inside. Not overly salty Prawn Pad Thai - $15.50 - big portion. I liked the proportion of fresh bean sprouts and peanuts to noodles. There were around 7-8 big shrimps which was very generous for the price. The noodles were nicely cooked. A lot of places that have pad Thai always overcook their noodles and they break easily but here they are still intact long noodles. They are bouncy and have a good chew to then. Not overly sweet or salty. Nicely seasoned and not too oily. Vegetable green curry - $14.95 - lots of veggies - green peppers, bamboo shoots, carrots etc. The curry itself was really flavourful. Hint of lemongrass. Went so well with just plain rice. I could eat lots of rice with this dish (maybe 3 bowls haha) Drunken chicken noodles - $14.50 - big portion. Very strong basil flavour overall which I really liked. The noodles were again nicely cooked. Good amount of chicken. Would definitely order it again. Deep fried banana with ice cream - $5.50 - not too sweet. The batter was nice and thin and crispy. Good way to end the night. Overall I would recommend this place for Thai food. The interior feels very homey and the service is pretty good. The portions are good enough to feed a couple people and the flavours are pretty good. The prices are also reasonable for the amount of food you get. TIP: order their drunken noodles

the small containers all 2/3 full

ordered from this thai spot tonight. five of us ordered 109$ worth of food. As soon as we picked up the food, I could tell the portions were super small. We were given one small bag only, with five containers that were tiny. The take out containers werent even full. The food was ok, but for the price it was very expensive. But we are comparing it to Sabhai Thai so thats a tough measuring stick. Wont be going back for the shrinkflation.

Excellent spicy noodle dish, best with tofu. Caters to special requests/needs, like GF, no onions - no problem.

Note: those with kids will find there is no kid's menu, so be prepared to share or bring some home :) === 2. FOOD Thai Iced Tea ($4.50) Served in a tall, slim glass - lovely! Som Tum Thai (Green Papaya Salad, $16) A little on the small side for the price, but the flavours and mix of crunchy textures delight! Ruam Mit ($20 for 2 people) 2 x chicken satay skewers, 2 x spring rolls, and 2 x fish cake patties: the taste makes it worth the price of admission! Egg Fried Rice ($12.95 for large) So the portion is small for the price, but the flavour is delish and comes with that authentic taste that could only originate from a wok that had the right heat and cooking technique! Gang Dang (red curry, $19.50 with beef) This red curry has bamboo shoots and peppers, as well as your choice of prawns, chicken, pork, beef, or tofu. It comes in a small bowl and does not include rice so this may be the worst value on the menu, but the flavour is spot on. Pla Lad Prik (deep-fried fish, $25 for red snapper) You could do base fish for $1 less. The price is steep for what you get, but you will enjoy each mouthful. We got the sauce on the side which was good for us (your preference may differ) - it's sweet-and-sour like with chopped veggies. Nam Sai (like pho, $18.50 with pork) It's like a Thai version of Vietnamese pho! Comes with your choice of beef or pork. Nice and flavourful without being too strong or making you feel thirsty afterward. This might be the only item on the menu that aligns with the value/portion size! === 3. SERVICE It was good overall: reservation was taken easily and honoured, server was quite attentive and apologetic when she brought the incorrect dish and when the table seemed dirtier than expected upon arrival. No worries here! === 4. ENVIRONMENT It's a neighbourhood joint that shares the building with a framing company. Older on the outside and inside - to get up and into the place may be a challenge with those navigating a wheelchair or baby stroller. There are a decent number of tables for groups up to say, 10 or so amid the older, perhaps intimate decor. Parking is however lucky you are between the businesses; at least 5 spots appear to be available on the side of the building.

FOOD Moo Tod Kratiem ($20) This is like the Thai version of pork tonkatsu - panko-breaded pork sliced up - that's served up on a bed of cabbage, carrots, and bean sprouts. It was decent and my little guy like it but note for all parents: even requesting a dish to be "mild" can be seen as spicy for little ones! Gaeng Keaw Waan ($20) It's a green curry served with a bowl of rice - in it are chicken, peppers, carrots, and bamboo shoots. It's pretty good also but the same warning about "mild" applies here to parents of little ones :) Pad See-Ew Vegetarian ($22) You can order this with beef, chicken, or pork for the same price. It's decent with a hint of heat (when requested "mild"), but far too small for the price in takeout. === 3. SERVICE For a takeout order, the service was professional - they do get busy as the only Thai joint in the area surrounded by apartments, so call ahead for best results! === 4. ENVIRONMENT It's small, a little dim, but clean. Best to keep your groups to 6 or preferably 4 or smaller. We are big fans of traditional fare, but the Block is a place we are so glad we experienced and will certainly return utilizing the knowledge we garnered during our first experience. A big thank you to for helping us through picking one price fixe January exploration of your local restaurants and filling it with other ala carte additions. As we often do we ordered far too much food, wanting to explore everything off a menu that is far reaching. Not sure if our additions worked with the price fixe menu, but we sure enjoyed checking everything out. The interior is interesting with the addition of structural steel in the space to keep this heritage building (I think) standing tall for a few generations. We sure hope it's still here for a long while and will most likely come again the next time we are in Victoria. That is saying a lot as there are a wide range of restaurants in the neighbourhood, but you do want to check the Block out!
