Crispy Fried Duck
Vic Y.

I'm generally not a fan of Thai food, except pad thai and pad see ew. But damn this place is good, and not too busy- might I have stumbled upon a hidden gem? I've always had a thing against Thai satay (sorry), but the one here is much better than I've had in the past. While I still prefer Malaysian satay, the chicken satay here is is juicy and well seasoned, and peanut sauce adequately flavourful. The best thing though, was really the crispy duck. Oh my goodness. The duck was completely deboned, deep fried to a perfect crisp, then placed on delicious bed of greens and tamarind sauce. This dish is easily one of the best things I've eaten on the island. I mean, it was fried so well, the fat beneath the skin nearly melted in my mouth. Wow. If you're a duck lover, this is an absolute must!! Forgot to add, the service is great too. Servers are all super nice and the food arrives fast.

Fried Duck? More like Dried Duck!

This tasty dish was only 25 dollars...it was literally inedible. Think twice before ordering from this place especially with so many thai restaurants in Victoria

Not a fancy place, but the food is excellent. The curry is one of the better ones I've had and Loved the spicy pork and eggplant dish.

Generic Thai food, nothing super special. Parking (a few spots) available beside the restaurant.

Fantastic Thai food, I've tried a few places in town and this one is best by far, I will keep going back.

Oh man. So fresh and good. Spring rolls to begin with. Crispy and with a nice sweet spicy dip. Then the ginger beef was amazing.

Delicious and great service. I would highly recommend. I ordered the yellow curry, and it was a great temperature.

=== 1. VERDICT/VALUE Just based on a single takeout visit:…read morethe food wasn't cheap but it was good! === 2. FOOD Moo Tod Kratiem ($20) This is like the Thai version of pork tonkatsu - panko-breaded pork sliced up - that's served up on a bed of cabbage, carrots, and bean sprouts. It was decent and my little guy like it but note for all parents: even requesting a dish to be "mild" can be seen as spicy for little ones! Gaeng Keaw Waan ($20) It's a green curry served with a bowl of rice - in it are chicken, peppers, carrots, and bamboo shoots. It's pretty good also but the same warning about "mild" applies here to parents of little ones :) Pad See-Ew Vegetarian ($22) You can order this with beef, chicken, or pork for the same price. It's decent with a hint of heat (when requested "mild"), but far too small for the price in takeout. === 3. SERVICE For a takeout order, the service was professional - they do get busy as the only Thai joint in the area surrounded by apartments, so call ahead for best results! === 4. ENVIRONMENT It's small, a little dim, but clean. Best to keep your groups to 6 or preferably 4 or smaller. Wheelchairs and baby strollers could theoretically fit, but they're a squeeze in the small gaps between tables. Parking is up to the driver's luck on the street out front.

Ambiance was great - super warm and welcoming which was magnified by the host. Super lovely. Then the wait staff. Whoever is hiring/training is doing a great job! Not drinking right now but the cocktail menu was super tempting. Every menu item sounded great. We got some help on ordering from our servers and Tanya picked ones she had enjoyed before. We also sat right beside the pick up window so it was fun seeing food come out! The food was fantastic. See pictures for what we ordered. Not sure if I can remember the names of everything but it was a perfect combo!!

We are big fans of traditional fare, but the Block is a place we are so glad we experienced and will certainly return utilizing the knowledge we garnered during our first experience. A big thank you to for helping us through picking one price fixe January exploration of your local restaurants and filling it with other ala carte additions. As we often do we ordered far too much food, wanting to explore everything off a menu that is far reaching. Not sure if our additions worked with the price fixe menu, but we sure enjoyed checking everything out. The interior is interesting with the addition of structural steel in the space to keep this heritage building (I think) standing tall for a few generations. We sure hope it's still here for a long while and will most likely come again the next time we are in Victoria. That is saying a lot as there are a wide range of restaurants in the neighbourhood, but you do want to check the Block out!
