Green curry, pad Thai, white rice & spring rolls was the takeout order, $34.56 was the total before tip. Biggest disappointment was the curry. Seemed like a broken sauce. Tasted ok. Pad Thai was good. It was a lighter color than we're used to. Spring rolls came with two sauces, a peanut type and the usual sauce you get. They were great. It's been over ten years since we've eaten here, but we will be back again much sooner than that. read more

The Thai Gem has been open for 35years without one case of food poisoning. Reason being, all the food is made fresh including all take orders. It's a family owned business, father is providing meet and greet table service while the son is the master chef. I would recommend the Thai Gem to anyone looking for quality service and excellent Thai food. read more

Thai Gem - Pad Thai combo w/ Chicken & Rice., also Seafood fried rice :) - Thai Near Me - Clovis, California

I still go here. Almost a decade now. I enjoy their pad thai. Its not as dark and full of sauce or oil like some other places (Pad Thai Rest.). Not that dark and saucy/oily is bad. Its just diff and sometimes the pallet wants these subtle changes. Thai Gems phad thai is drier and not so oily. It is a little more plain. I knocked a star off bc recently I saw a few things that disgusted me. 1. The cooks bonnets cover only the top of their heads. Hair still stick out and flow down to the neck and was shaking around as they move about. 2. The old guy would use a dirty scissor to cut chili peppers. The scissor was just sitting on his mouse pad. He would even put a few peppers on the mouse pad while he cut the one in his hand. That mouse and mouse pad looked pretty dirty. I don't think they've ever been washed. The scissor had dark gunk on it so obviously it hasn't been washed and it didn't look like a food scissor. I'm sure he uses it on paper and anything else at the register. One last note, it appears the portions are less than other places and the prices are at or above the competitors. I do still like their phad thai. read more

The pumpkin curry was recommended to me by the owner. I'm glad I tried it, it was excellent. Friendly service and a relaxing ambiance. I will definitely come back. Reasonable prices too. The rice was cooked properly and seemed to be of high quality. If you're in the area it's worth stopping by. read more

So we tried the Shrimp Pad Thai and let's just say it was extremely dry not to mention they asked if we wanted it spicy or mild, we asked for spicy and it came w/ a small container of dried chili pods.. never had dry pad Thai or had to add my own spice to it. Disappointed to say the least! read more

Thai Gem - Combo 1 Very yummy! Taste water! - Thai Near Me - Clovis, California

We've been coming here for years. Food is DELICIOUS and very affordable. The owner is incredibly nice and always has cool stories to tell. I would give him 10 stars if I could! read more

Food was delicious! As a nearly new Fresnian, I have been very reluctant to try food out here unless it has been recommended by someone trustworthy. So, my husbands professor recommended this place. We were a bit confused at first because apparently there is a "Gem of Thailand" in Fresno, but this is "THAI GEM" in clovis. Anyway, we came here on a Saturday with my family (7 of us, two kids), who were visiting from the Bay Area. The place was neatly tucked inside a shopping center. Suprisingly, the inside was very neat, clean with a touch of elegant. The owner took care of us with a great personality, good information and good suggestions. We ordered the pad thia, coconut soup, shrimp and chicken fried rice ( seperate) and orange chicken. I have to say the soup was delicious, and my husband fell in love. My mother loved the pad thai, as the noodles were very flavorful. The kids loved the orange chicken as did my brother and my grandma loved it all, as did I. We are all big foodies, and back in the Bay Area there is an array of Thai restaurants so you can imagine the options we have and the experience in thai food. Thai gem, felt and tasted authentic. The atmoshpere was quiet, not a lot of people, just several take-home orders. This is def a come to spot for me and my husband from now on, for lunch or dinner. I know my family was not dissappointed and will make this a come to spot when they visit Fresno again. The only thing I forgot to mention was the fact that none of us ordered anything to drink, all we drank was the water we were first served. But we didn't seem to care because we were enjoying every bite of food and the water balanced it off perfectly. =) read more

I really enjoy coming to this place. The service is really good. The man that works there is really funny. He loves to get to know his customers on a personal level and I love that. He's honest about everything and certainly makes sure that you'd want to come back. The atmosphere of the restaurant is really nice too. It's small and really different from what many people are used to, but that's what makes it so warming. I love getting something new every time that I come here and I haven't been disappointed yet. read more

Staying at Holiday Inn, I saw the sign for this little Gem. So glad I did! I ordered Egg Rolls, Chicken Satay, and Lad Nar. Egg Rolls perfect. I prefer Thai Egg rolls because they have glass noodles and basil. The dipping sauce is excellent. The Chicken Satay has a really nice grill taste, but the peanut sauce (the owner says it is his Mom's recipe) is to die for. Very very good. The Lad Nar is tasty. I like the thick noodles too. The owner said he takes requests, so if you have a favorite Thai dish, not on the menu, he will try to recreate it for you. Great customer service. Can't wait to come back! read more

I ordered take out, just to try the PAD THAI. The pad thai was just ok, not the worst but certainly not the best in Fresno/Clovis area. It was not the most generous in terms of portion too in comparison to other places, and quite expensive compared to other places at $9.75 The pad thai had a little too strong of a shrimp paste taste, or maybe the shrimp was not the freshest. Had bean sprouts on the inside of the take out box which was not too bad, but again too skimpy in terms of amount of bean sprouts. The pad thai had 8 pieces of shrimp placed on the top, but should be incorporated into the pad thai, not placed on the pad thai as a way to create illusion of a generous shrimp portion, also there was no egg present in the pad thai, and no greens too which normally contributes to the aroma. I would really recommend this eatery to improve the taste if its shrimp pad thai by making sure it does not have a pungent shrimp smell or flavor that overwhelms the whole meal. Also updating the store looks, it looks very messy and dingy which is an utter turn off. read more

So I Yelped this place one night for take out and it was a hit! This place is very small and family owned. While I was there waiting for my take-out, I got a few historical facts from the owner, who by the way is a very talkative and friendly old man. Here are the facts: 1. It is rated the best Thai restaurant in Fresno....according the urbanspoon. 2. It is the oldest Thai restaurant in Fresno. I forgot how many years. 3. It is own and run by authentic Thai. Apparently there are 15 Thai restaurants in Fresno, and only 2 are owned by Thai's, the rest are by Laos and Cambodian. 4. Food are made after it is ordered. The owner has never served a pre-made dish since opening the restaurant. This was my first time at the restaurant, and after I ordered, the owner was shocked. He told me, "Wow, you really know how to order Thai food. These are all the specials here." I told him I'm from SoCal and I've been to quite a few top-rated Thai places down south, so I might be a newbie to his restaurant, but I know my Thai food. Anyways, I ordered the Tom Yum Talay seafood soup, BBQ beef salad, and Pad Kee Mow (drunken noodles). All three dishes were very good! I really liked the beef salad. Prices are average, about $8-$10 for each dish. I'm very glad to have found this place. Definitely going back for some more!! read more

Please give me a good reason to make this a great review. i've missed you so much. Ordering delivery today. Granted, not the same as being in that wonderful atmosphere, but still.... Much love. New to Fresno. Ordered pad thai and some appetizers. Ownership was very nice. Accommodating. When I got home the pad thai was not made with correct thai noodles. Really badly done. Appetizer egg roll was good. Vegetable tempura was good. Pad thai was really bad. read more

This is my #1 spot in Fresno for thai food! Big portions, all freshly made to order for a good price! Lots of options and good deals. The owner is very passionate and proud of what he does and it shows! Basil chicken is my favorite and their pad thai isn't bogged down with sauce, it's light and fresh! Food can take a while to cook because it's all made when you order but it's worth the wait and gives you time to take in the cute space and enjoy your friends company. Definitely a must try spot and I always recommend it! :) read more

Thai Gem - Combo #7 with chow me instead of pad thai. Ate my egg roll before I remembered to take a picture. So good! - Thai Near Me - Clovis, California

I had a craving for some yellow curry, so I turned to Yelp for help. It was mid-afternoon, and I was noticing most restaurants closed at 2 or 3pm and opened again at 5pm. I couldn't wait until 5 and I really, really wanted curry, and only curry. Thai Gem came to my tummy's rescue. The curry was OK, not my favorite, but what has inclined me to give a 4th star is that I got to put in an order at all. I called very close to the closing time (between lunch and dinner), and yet they didn't turn me away. I was their last customer and when I walked in to pick up and pay, I was treated like an old friend. On an aside, I did get lost trying to find this place for the first time. So for others like me, who always seem to take the wrong turn into Lostville, this place is located in the same parking lot with the dollar store, gas station, and Denny's. read more

I've heard that this place has more "authentic" Thai food than my Thai restaurant of choice, Thai Country, but to me that sounds like an excuse for the inferior food here. It's like saying pizza you have in Rome is better than pizza you get from Me N Eds because the one from Italy is more authentic. Have you seen the crap they put on pizza over in Italy? I don't care if Me N Eds isn't authentic; I don't want pizza with dates and truffles and all that crap on it. I had the pad thai and some red curry... Highly forgettable. The ambiance of Thai Gem reminds me of a stereotypical run down Chinese restaurant. If the food were better than mediocre, it would be worth tolerating. It's not, so I'm going to stick with the "unauthentic" but consistently pleasing Thai Country. read more

Best Tom yam (hot and sour soup) you can find in Fresno. Very friendly boss as well had a great chat with him since I came in a 8.55pm and he didn't make a big fuss about it at all. One of the few restaurant still own by a Thai guy and cooking that is close enough to real Thai food. read more

Situated on the southeast corner of Shaw and Willow in the shopping center anchored by a 99 cents only store in Clovis, Thai Gem is somewhat of a hidden gem. We arrived at about 7 pm on a Monday and ordered to-go. I ordered the Basil Chicken and my wife had the Shrimp Paste Fried Rice with Sweet Pork. On this particular day and time the restaurant was empty and I was greeted by a friendly man who I presume is the owner who was very friendly, talkative, and helpful. He explained to me how every dish is prepared fresh and that nothing is pre-made. Service was quick as it didn't take long for our food to come out. The restaurant itself is long and narrow consisting of a central walkway with seating on either side. The decor seemed to be a little dated but the restaurant appeared clean. My order of Basil Chicken was really good but could have had more basil as I could barely distinguish the taste of it in the dish. It was spicy just as I ordered it and had a lot of chicken and vegetables. The side I rice ordered (which cost extra) was perfectly cooked. Overall, it was a good dish and the portion was large. My wife's Shrimp Paste Fried Rice was just OK in her opinion and lacked mango which the authentic version includes. My wife's came with an egg (scrambled and fried flat) that was sliced into pieces and placed on top of her rice. The sweet pork was on the side. Sliced Thai chilies came on the side. Their menu had a lot of dishes I'd like to try - including some well-priced lunch & dinner specials - so I will definitely be back to try some of those in the near future read more

Fast, friendly service. Plenty of menu options, and the sweet and sour chicken here tastes better than what you would find anywhere in Fresno. Pad Thai was a bit dry, but was still good. read more

Super sweet owner and amazing food! The owner prides himself on making food to order. No food poisoning in years!

You know that funny little piece you sometimes crunch on when eating beef or chicken? Well, I'm happy to say the meat here is free of "funny pieces". In fact, the chicken is all white meat and the beef is tender and tastes fresh. Albeit we get the same thing every time, but that just proves its consistency. This dining room is tiny and the front counter is packed full of junk but I have eaten Thai in SF to Saudi Arabia and this guy knows how to make some really pleasing food. I would give the full 5 stars if only it was cleaner and more tidy. read more

Ive had Thai Gem a handful of times, and honestly I haven't stopped thinking about it. It definitely looks like a hole in the wall type of place, but that just adds to the charm. When I was pregnant I would literally lay awake at night thinking about the food. I am not a California native, and in the three years we've been here it is hands down my favorite place that we've tried. read more

Something should be said about a restaurant that has been around in the same place, with the same owner since 1982. Not only that, the owner is truly of Thai decent. I hear that's rare in these parts. I'm addicted to the #7 - Garlic Chicken with steamed rice and pad thai, and an eggroll (which my fiance gets - not a fan of eggrolls). Always a slice of lime for the pad thai. (Owner once told us that's the TRUE way to eat pad thai and the other "Thai" restaurants don't do that.) I get cravings for this plate! I truly enjoy this restaurant. Small but comfortable. A weekly treat! read more

One word....disgusting!!! Every dish and glass was SO dirty!!! Had to wait over 90 minutes for our food and we were the only people in the restaurant. My food was brought out in such on a filthy tray. It was shocking. I have no idea how this place has 4 stars! read more

I had a Panang, salad with from scratch peanut dressing and sticky rice combo with mango sticky rice for dessert. This was the freshest, well balanced, flavorful, high quality Thai food I've had since moving to Fresno from the Bay Area. The food scene here in Fresno has disappointed me as well as made me ill, but not Thai Gem. It is a crown jewel in Fresno. The owner take great care and pride in how they prepare Thai food and they are so diligent because they treasure their customers. It is important what is not in foods that affects smell, taste, appearance, texture and mouth feel. I didn't detect any modified food starch, gums, preservatives, artificial flavors, colors or additives. To top it all the mango sticky rice was warm, creamy, buttery, fresh and perfect. read more

Thai Gem certainly lives up to its name. Quaint litte restaurant with seating for about 24 people. Had the spicy beef salad, eggplant w/ chicken, 3-flavor fish and shrimp pad thai. Everything was delicious, especially the fish dish. I believe it was the owner who was doing all of the serving/waiting, so once the place filled up, it took awhile to get the check and leave, about 30 minutes. Oddly, I didn't mind so much as I was tired w/ a full, satiated belly. Some digestion time worked out just fine:) read more

Thai Gem's great. It's a small family owned place with some stellar Thai Food made by actual Thai folks! (Yep, most Fresno Thai places are owned by Laotians or Cambodians.) My personal favorites: 1) Pnang Beef 2) Hoi Tod (I call it the Thai Pizza) 3) and that wonderful coconut soup that I never can remember the name of. Damnit, I could drink that stuff by the gallons. read more
