I used to come here all the time and recently re-visited this place since I happened to be in the area. I love how the food is always consistent, it's authentic Thai food, and the portions are a generous size as well. I tend to stick with getting the chicken pad thai. They were open on the 4th of July holiday - score one for them! Thai Basil Restaurant is located on Newbury Street in a subterranean space down a flight of external stairs from the sidewalk. So yes, not at all handicap accessible unless there is a hidden elevator I am not aware of. The dining space goes pretty deep, so there is a good number of tables to choose from. Me, however, I was here for take-out for my contribution to a potluck picnic out on the Esplanade nearby. Thai Basil is actually pretty convenient for that - take the T to Copley, and it is located on the block to the right on Newbury, then head back to Dartmouth toward the closest walking bridge above Storrow Drive. My order (previously placed) was pipping hot and ready for pick up. Service was friendly. The bathroom was fine, though located through a door, down a not so pretty hall. Forks and napkins were included, but I asked for a couple of chopsticks for serving. For easy to share dishes, I decided on the Pad See Ew with Chicken $9.95 (dinner price), and Pad Thai Vegetable $9.95 (dinner), figuring that the shrimp part of the normal chicken & shrimp version might not do so well sitting out in the summer sun and heat for the 1+ hour we still had till dinner time. Both were tasty, with firm bright veggies and maybe a handful of fried tofu triangles tossed in (rather than the usual nominal 1-2 pieces, or even zero tofu, so I didn't feel piggy helping myself to 2 triangles), and the portions were good - particularly the Pad Thai, as the noodles seemed to be nicely packed into the metal tray. *** 5/2018 *** I love sweetened coconut milk, so in turn, I really enjoyed the mango sticky rice $6.95 at Thai Basil. Their Thai ice tea $3.50 was fine though it was half ice. *** 9/2018 Dinner *** The portion of Vegetable Pad Thai was pretty good for the $10.95 price tag. The vegetables were bright and firm, but there was sadly no tofu among them. Their American sweet version was just to my liking. *** 11/2018 *** Okay, mystery solved - the current iteration of their vegetable pad thai $10.95 does not come with tofu. We moved to back bay! So we're hitting all the thai stops immediately. The drunken noodles were perfect. A huge portion, only 10 dollars, big chunks of beef and the noodles were just right. I thought it wasn't spicy enough but I've started to realize that's a me problem. We also had the hot basil with minced chicken. The portion was decent but a little pricier (13.95). Terrible delivery experience - I ordered directly through their website at 11:15 they didn't open until 12 and the earliest delivery window was 12:30, which I understood and was fine with. My food didn't arrive till 2 PM. I ordered a pad Thai with crispy chicken as part of the lunch, combo and dumplings on the side. They didn't give me the dumplings and gave me regular chicken and not crispy because apparently they can't just upcharge for crispy chicken themselves and they did not think to call to tell me. The regular chicken was rubbery and gross and my food was cold by the time I got here with the dumplings missing. I called to complain, and they only offered me money off my next order. There will never be a next order at this joke of a restaurant. Then they only offered me a 20% refund and then finally a 35% refund. Horrible customer service I do not recommend. read more

I've been here a bunch of times over the last 6 months and I always get the Red Curry. Today I ordered it for pickup but they gave me Yellow curry instead. When I mentioned it should be Red Curry, the woman working there said I ordered Yellow (I've never ordered Yellow Curry anywhere) and that she confirmed this on the phone (she never confirmed anything). She accused me of changing my order even after I told her I was a REPEAT customer and this is my order every time. After repeating how *I* screwed up the order and it's *my* fault, I told her I'm not paying for the wrong order. For a Thai place that has *decent* food (but nothing compared to other cities or states), it's a little pricey for what you get. I walk by this restaurant often while on Newbury and wanted to try Thai basil for lunch. The restaurant is located between Clarendon and Dartmouth Ave, requiring you to climb down a few steps to get to the restaurant. The restaurant is pretty spacious with ample seating, even during the lunch hour on a Monday afternoon. What's great is that the restaurant is fully staffed in order for you to eat and go during your typical work day. The menu was a one sheet front and back with different options from curry and noodles to fried rice and different Thai dishes you would fine at any Thai restaurant. I decided to try their Phad Thai lunch special which includes either spring rolls or pork dumplings (I chose the pork dumplings here). 3 pork dumplings were served on a tiny plate with small in size and came with sauce. The dumplings were not bad but I'm pretty sure they are dumplings you could find at Costco or something in the freezer section. Nothing too extravagant here. The Phad Thai was very flavorful and a good amount was served for lunch. Normally from my experience with Phad Thai, it's either made with a red tomato-like sauce or with hoisin or fish sauce. My favorite, which looks like the fish sauce which looks more brown than red, was served at this place, making it one of my favorite Thai restaurants here in Boston so far. I wouldn't mind stopping back here at Thai Basil, maybe for dinner the next time. If you're on Newbury and are wanting something to eat that isn't going to make you shell out a lot of money, definitely stop here! read more

I've only gotten delivery from Thai Basil. I have ordered yellow curry with chicken and steamed noodles, chicken satay, and pork dumplings. The yellow curry is my favorite that I have found in the city so far. You can customize spice levels, it is rich and creamy, and the portion is huge - easily enough for 2 meals. The chicken satay is spot on. The chicken quality of the satay is much better than the chicken quality in the other dishes- marinated, juicy, and fresh. The peanut sauce was a bit thick but still good and went great with the cucumber sauce. The steamed dumplings were not as good as the other 2 items in this review, but still solid. They were flavorful, but do not hold up well in delivery. Also they were very small. Overall I will continue to order delivery from here as my go to Thai spot in Boston. read more

I forgot just how good this place is. I used to work at Snappy Sushi which is like 5 storefronts down from this place. I would constantly come here in the summer for Thai Iced Coffees to keep my sane/alive during my shift. Two weeks ago, my boyfriend and I came here because he was craving Thai food after his shift. I was going to join friends for nachos after so I only wanted to nibble at his food. He ordered this Thai fried rice and these Thai styled wings and boy oh boy, I forgot just how good their food was. Their service is phenomenal. Food came out pretty quickly, very hot, and very fresh. Their rice was GOOD and their wings were pretty damn good. I definitely need to dine there more. As always, I was craving dessert and I saw that they had mango with sticky rice. That was exactly what I was craving. However, the waitress told us that they ran out and I had a mini heart attack. After that, my boyfriend told me he liked the fried ice cream here. So we got green tea. The presentation was absolutely stunning, topped with raspberry sauce, sesame seeds and a flower that I assume was edible. It looked great, it tasted horrendous. The breading tasted stale and ruined the whole thing. Also the raspberry was not a good touch. The flavors and consistencies did not match/sit well. I was sad, but willing to overlook it just by how good the main food and their coffee. This is definitely one of my top 3 favorite Thai places in Boston for sure. read more

It got to the point where we felt uncomfortable and despite leaving more than the change of what was given back to us she proceeded to say bad commentary on our way out. She stated, "if you can not afford it then do not go out to eat" in a rude and loud tone. I followed up multiple times and was at one point told that there was no order in my name despite the fact that I had ALREADY paid for it. Moving on to the actual food itself, I ordered unsweetened iced jasmine tea, spring rolls with shrimp, and drunken noodles with duck. Sad to say that the iced tea was the best thing I had. The spring rolls were rubbery with a lot of excess rice wrap. I noticed that the shrimps were not properly cleaned and I could see the shrimp poo .
