This place has gone downhill. The service was terrible. We were seated for 10 min, and no one came over to the table. I had to stop both (only 2 servers) of the waitstaff asking for water. Do not recommend. I ordered pick up here and was seated next to the vents while i waited. While waiting, I could hear rats and mice running around in the vents. I waited for 15 minutes, and the entire time i could these rats running around and scraping their sharp nails against the metallic vents. I mentioned it to one of the staff who said it was normal and that they don't come out of the vents. I can only imagine what is in the air we are breathing, and I can only imagine what happens at night when no one is around and they are free to roam around. read more

Great prices, greater portions, I came with a party of 6 and we all got our food relatively quickly. For the location, it was well worth the money! Ordered the roasted duck drunken noodles, which came with a pretty good sauce, baby corn, and flat rice noodles. Some pieces of the duck were a tiny bit dry but if you mixed it into the noodles and sauce then there was really no issue! Considering how it's on Newbury St I'm pretty sure I'll be coming here a lot ;) Their Thai Iced Tea is SWEET. Too sweet in my opinion... not sure if I would order that again coz Pad Thai is pretty sweet to begin with... Note, we went on Saturday night and it was packed. Keep that in mind. I ordered the drunken noodles with chicken and a Thai ice tea. Thai Ice Tea was pretty good well you really can't go wrong with that. Came around noon on a Sunday and it was not crowded at first however quickly became filled towards 1pm. The drunken noodle was not spicy at all I had to add spice too it. I came here with a few friends from high school one of which I haven't seen in four years. This motley crew hailing from the American south ducked into a little under ground establishment away from the harsh northern winter. We peeled off layers of coats and flung them to our seats and tables as we had when we last gathered as youth. But it seemed our coats were bigger and our social gatherings more subdued. I bit into a crab Rangoon like I would a 10 cent chicken nugget from the cafeteria. We talked about bad bosses as we might have about strict teachers. I ate some pad Thai with a distinctive tangy flavor as I would a child's serving of spaghetti from the Georgia public school system. We compared 401k plans like we did quiz grades from geography. My friend mixed her chicken Penang curry into her rice just like she might instant mashed potatoes and gravy. We dreamed about where we would settle down like we might have about where we'd all end up in college. Now on the other side, we reminisced about the small town we left behind tucked away in the suburbs of Georgia for the bustling metropolis of Massachusetts. As soon as I sat down, I have been brought a check, and was constantly looked at and rushed to sign it. I couldn't enjoy my meal at all due to huge discomfort. So I finally signed my check... Just for them to start abusing me because I didn't want to tip them for service (trust me, even without this abuse, there is no service here to tip). They were suggesting me to write down 20% of the tip. Then they brought some booklet which explains how "international customers often ask about tipping". Then they even brought a check from another table to show how much they tipped. Lastly, they told me I don't need to ever come again to dine here. And so I won't. This was a serious violation and discrimination. Regardless of the tipping culture (which is not universal), and its importance to the staff, they have no right to act this way, and should be reported and penalized. Authentic thai flavor profiles, at a decent price. But check the dishes before using. FOOD: The treasure bags are very good, crispy and very pretty presentation. The Tom Yum noodle soup was very big and reasonably spicy, according to my lunch mate. He enjoyed the dish a lot. I liked the Pad Thai. It was very saucy, which I liked, as some Pad Thais can be a bit dry. The dish came with only four shrimp, but the Shrimp were reasonably sized. Most pad thais come with lime on the side, but I had to ask for the lime wedge here. The dish could have stood to have more egg in it. DRINKS: They only offer beer and wine here, not a full bar, to my disappointment. But they had Sapporo Light, which is usually harder to find. CLEANLINESS: The reason this place gets three stars is because there were some problems with the dishes and glasses. There was some weird green substance on the inside of my beer glass. I only noticed it after I poured the beer in the glass. Furthermore, the appetizer plate that I received had some crusty substance on it when I ran my hand over the surface. That was another disappointment after the glass issue. SERVICE: Service was quick and friendly. They definitely do card here, so have your ID ready if you want to drink. read more

This place is good. Decor is old, not very shi-shi, however its age lends itself to its successes. Places need to be good if they are to last on newbury street. It's not located in the prime of newbury st, but close enough, near niketown. My cousin and I were looking for a moderately priced and casual place, without a wait, as soon as we walked by we knew this was the place. The menu was good, however it was hard to see the catagories in the poor lighting. Our order, fresh basil rolls with shrimp, shrimp pad Thai, and chicken hot basil. Two Thai iced teas, and a side of brown rice. The app came quickly and upon the first noshing, I knew this place was going to be good. The lettuce wasn't cold, the shrimp was still slight warm and absolutely moist. It was made at time of order, and the sauce was to die for. Thai tea was perfect, not overly creamy and not overly sweet, probably the best, I haven't made myself. Entrees, the pad Thai was good, all it lacked was a lime wedge atop, perhaps some fresh uncooked sprouts. As my cousin noted the hot basil was presented in an unusual way, lots of mushrooms and very wet with brown sauce. It was good though. He's not a huge fan of mushrooms, but fortunately, I am. Went here with a group of friends. Everyone ordered their own dish. I ordered the vegetable mandalay (noodles in yellow curry with vegetables). The dish arrived in a large bowl with crispy noodles on top. The curry was flavorful, not too spicy, and had a good amount of vegetables (and I enjoyed the selection as well). This dish is salty though, so expect to be quite thirsty after (there are several good milk tea shops about a 15 minute walk away from Thai Basil in Chinatown). Other people at the table ordered pad thai, chili shrimp, chili scallops, etc - and everyone seemed happy with their dishes (the only "complaint" was with the scallops dish which seemed a bit smaller than the rest, but it makes sense that a noodle dish is larger + cheaper than one with a more expensive ingredient like scallops. read more

I've been eating asian food for a long time. Iuse to live in Boston, 10 min walk from Thai Basil. I went to Boston last week and I may say that Thai Basil was aweful! If this is the best Thai in the area, that may be because they buy the best frozen food. Maybe the night i went there the oven was not working. Thai Basil Restaurant is a decent spot if you're in the area. I have been here twice, once two years ago and the experiences were pretty similar. The waiters are a little much at times (they refill your waters after each sip), but they were at least attentive since some foods can take a little while to come out. The first time I had the pad Thai, which is average when compared to all of the Thai places I have tried in the past. The most recent time I ordered the calamari, and my friends ordered the chicken satay and the chicken wings. The calamari and the chicken wings came with a sweet chili sauce, which paired better with the chicken in my opinion. The Calamari was overly breaded and seemed more like fat than fried squid. The chicken wings were STEAMING when they finally came out of the kitchen, and weren't seasoned that well, but the sauce made up for it (we asked for it on the side). The chicken satay was good, but the peanut sauce was a little bland. But for $24, we were all pretty satisfied. I can definitely see myself coming back (unless you guys have a better suggestion for Thai in the Back Bay area). read more

I walk by this restaurant often while on Newbury and wanted to try Thai basil for lunch. The restaurant is located between Clarendon and Dartmouth Ave, requiring you to climb down a few steps to get to the restaurant. The restaurant is pretty spacious with ample seating, even during the lunch hour on a Monday afternoon. What's great is that the restaurant is fully staffed in order for you to eat and go during your typical work day. The menu was a one sheet front and back with different options from curry and noodles to fried rice and different Thai dishes you would fine at any Thai restaurant. I decided to try their Phad Thai lunch special which includes either spring rolls or pork dumplings (I chose the pork dumplings here). 3 pork dumplings were served on a tiny plate with small in size and came with sauce. The dumplings were not bad but I'm pretty sure they are dumplings you could find at Costco or something in the freezer section. Nothing too extravagant here. The Phad Thai was very flavorful and a good amount was served for lunch. Normally from my experience with Phad Thai, it's either made with a red tomato-like sauce or with hoisin or fish sauce. My favorite, which looks like the fish sauce which looks more brown than red, was served at this place, making it one of my favorite Thai restaurants here in Boston so far. I wouldn't mind stopping back here at Thai Basil, maybe for dinner the next time. If you're on Newbury and are wanting something to eat that isn't going to make you shell out a lot of money, definitely stop here! read more

Not the BEST Thai place I've been to, but it's mediocre. Located right on Newbury Street, the atmosphere inside is quite nice. The very dark/dim lighting is evident as soon as you walk in. The wait staff took a little while to bring a friend's Thai Tea and food took a little while to come out, which was fine, ensuring that it is made to order. I ordered the Pad Thai and the mango fried rice with a friend, which were both decent. Complete waste of $50. I just got takeout from Thai Basil. The chicken satay was raw - totally pink in the inside. The chicken in the yellow curry dish was rubbery. The sticky rice was like glue. I keep finding myself asking the same question while eating at the Thai restaurants of this city: Why is everything SO SO sweet??? Thai food is supposed to be a bit sweet, yes; but this place is going overboard. We ordered the papaya salad, chicken pad thai, and veggie/tofu pad kee mao and they were all soggy and saccharine. Papaya salad is supposed to be bright and snappy with spice, rich fish sauce umami, and individual veggie flavors. But it was limp and soupy (and too sweet). The pad thai was like... a pale lump of soggy, sweet noodles with a bit of chicken and a few bean sprouts. The pad kee mao/drunken noodles--which are supposed to just have a touch of soy sauce--were brown and drowned in soy sauce (and again, toooooo sweeeeeet). It was soy saucier than is typical even for Pad See Ew. Service was quick and friendly, but that was really it. read more
