If you know exactly what you want, and can find it on their website, well, I guess you might be okay. If, however, you have questions, or need help, just give it up, go to Cavender's and buy a hat off the shelf. Been a customer for over 30 years In Buda and then Lockhart. Bought over 12 Custom hats and hats for my wife as well as my best clients from Manny and then David. Just visiting with them was a great experience in itself. So sad for the recent loss. Walked in today to have a hat cleaned and shaped as well as to Have a new one made. The man behind the counter blew some compressed air over it and stated there was nothing he could do with my hat. He proceeded to walk into a room closing the door behind him Only to see him leave the shop thro the back door. Needless to say I wasn't able to pick out a new hat to be manufactured. This place is amazing! My husband's father had a silver belly hat from the 60s that was all beaver. My husband wears a different size hat than his father. The incredibly talented man that runs (also owns, I believe) the place completely took apart and remade the hat to fit my husband's head. It looks absolutely perfect. I'm so happy we took it to him. We have several friends that also have hats made by this gentleman and they are truly magnificent. It's not a quick process, but anything worthwhile is worth waiting for. I purchased my second cowboy hat from Texas hatters when they were located in Buda Texas. I of course am still wearing it and each time I am complimented numerous times. I recently took that hat, and my first Stetson hat, in to be cleaned and was informed that they didn't need cleaning, just a good brushing. Each hat came out as though it had been cleaned and they did a marvelous job for only $20. Wow! I recommend them highly.! read more

This business is one of the only hatters in central Texas that will clean and block your hats. Some can somewhere but only if you buy yours from them. I will buy my hats from them in the future since they'll accommodate my other hats. I live over 50 miles away but i'll drive there anyway. Great custom hats! Shaped to my head and comfortable, I wear them all the time. I get lots of great feedback for my distinctive hats. One is a campaign style hat with the edges rolled for a western look, the other is the one the Pierce Brosnan wears on the AMC Mini Series- The Son. I have custom snake bands on them from Texas Hatters and they ROCK! Going back always makes me want more. Every time I go, they adjust the hats for free, great service! read more

Texas Hatters has been my go-to hatter for many, many years, ever since they were located in the Buda area. I own upwards of 8 of their custom hats and have visited their shop dozens of times to buy hatbands and get my hats shaped up. Unfortunately with David's passing the shop no longer offers quality work. The kids running it don't have the experience nor the temperment to provide the same quality of work. I recently brought in 3 of my old Texas Hatters hats for new sweatbands and to reblock and shape them. I was wearing my Texas Hatters Half Breed hat at the time I dropped off the hats needing repair, and told, and showed, the young kid behind the counter EXACTLY what I wanted. They were supposed to be just like those David made for me several times before, the kid said no problem. 6 weeks later I went to pick them up and he put in the wrong sweatbands and then lied to me saying that they no longer had those nicer hatbands. So, I picked one of their hats off their for sale rack, which did have the nicer sweatbands, showed him they did still have the nicer ones, and he just ignored me and said it was too late now and nothing he could do about it now. Sorry to say, but I won't be doing business with Texas Hatters any longer. There commitment to quality work appears to have gone away when David passed. :( read more

What an experience! My wife and I had such a great time getting our hats! From picking out what we wanted to having them shaped by the Master Hatter himself. This is another check mark for our bucket list! Don't waste your time with a big box store hat....have one made for YOUR HEAD! Being in the store and speaking with David and Joella was such a great experience. They not only make the best quality hats but work in a store with so much history. This place is an absolute gem. Being from Texas, I've loved cowboy hats and the book/movie Lonesome Dove and thought Gus had the coolest hat I'd ever seen. I happen upon this place online and called them up and sent in measurements and took a picture of my head. I have also never had a cowboy hat fit quite right. This not only fits perfectly but they are the finest hats I've ever seen. You can throw away all your other hats. They don't come cheap, but you get what you pay for and then some. I did not know my real hat size until David gave me a fitting. Turns out I'm a 7 3/4 long oval. I knew exactly what I wanted, a perfectly fitting clone of a Resitol my dear departed dad bought be over 30 years ago. The wonderful staff at Allens Boots in Round Rock (far better and nicer than the Austin location) pointed me to Texas Hatters. David made me exactly what I wanted and I could not be happier. Hats come with a lifetime shaping and creasing maintenance warranty. I feel for the quality the price is very fair. I'm confused why folks spend a lot more on store bought factory hats when for less than a high end Stetson you can get the highest quality one of a kind custom hat that is perfectly fitted to your head for less. My Dad passed away Dec 2013 and I sent his hat to Texas Hatters to be cleaned and re-blocked in order to have it ready for his memorial. The ol' man really used his hats on the ranch so I was not expecting "brand new" results but I DID ask for a few things: (1) that the Stetson liner be cleaned and replaced if they couldn't source a new one. (2) My Dad's name, DOB-DOD be engraved on the new sweat band (3) it be returned to its original shape v what Dad morphed it into. What I got was: (1) the liner was replaced with a Texas Hatter's liner. It's top quality but IT IS NOT WHAT I ASKED FOR! My dad didn't wear a Texas Hatter's creation - he wore STETSON. (2) Dad's name was added very nicely BUT NOT THE DATES although "Texas Hatters" is emblazoned in big bold letters. (3) Overall the resurrection of the hat was successful but the roll on the brim was misaligned to the oval of the crown by about 10 degrees (I steamed it and squared it myself). Summary: The work itself was acceptable - especially given the condition of the hat I sent in - but the attention to detail as requested was far less than I expected given their reputation. This was important enough to me that I inquired about the details via email prior to sending the hat in, then detailed my wishes in the box with the hat, followed up with a call to David once I received delivery notification AND again during the process. IMHO there was ample opportunity to do the job the way I asked. If this were not a "Memorial Hat' it would be no big deal. But in this instance I am more than a little disappointed. I have reached out to Stetson in hopes of securing a proper liner - - - we'll see what happens. UPDATE 05/13/14: The folks at Hatco in Garland, TX came through with new hat liners!!! So it's been 26 years since I first walked into Texas Hatters. It was in Buda then and it was to get my boyfriend a hat for his birthday. Jan 2019 marks 26 years later and I was taking that same man back for a new birthday hat. David is still smiling, the workmanship the he and Joelle put into the hats and hatbands is incredible. The entire experience is amazing and we couldn't have been happier. The hardest and most difficult part of the process is deciding what you want. They last forever- my husband has a "Hunter" that he's had forever, we really have no idea how old it is (he had it before we got together), and it's still doing the job. Pricing , well they are made to order so yep they are a bit pricey. That said they are worth every penny. I suggest doing recon and speaking with David to make sure you know what you want and then start saving. ( i couldn't help myself, I pick up my new straw hat next month. ) read more

Manny Gammage may be gone, but wife Norma and family are still there carrying on the tradition. They've made hats for at least 5 presidents, Waylon, Willie and God knows who else. The last two visits to their place yielded snubs that left me with the impression that if you aren't buying a $600 hat they don't have time for you anymore. I was in San Antonio for 5 days and swung by Texas Hatters on my way home to Kentucky. I can honestly say that this one-hour stop was the most favorite part of my entire trip! If quality, tradition, and hospitality are important to you, then look no further than David Torres and Texas Hatters. David went out of his way to give us the grand tour of his shop, explain, and demonstrate how he creates such beautiful works of Art. Yes, David's hats can be considered art, because each hat is truly unique, and custom fitted to the customer. David takes into account your head size, shape, and facial characteristics to help recommend a hat that is perfectly fitted and suited for YOU. Only the highest quality beaver is used, although he does offer hare and combination blends as well. For me, it was not just a purchase...it was an experience.
