Where to begin. I told my wife I wanted a cowboy hat. Rather than just buying me a cowboy hat, my wife bought me an experience. A trip to Austin to visit the Double R Hat House. The entire trip was phenomenal, but the double R hat house was certainly the cherry-on-top. From the moment we walked in we were effectively on a guided tour into the world of cowboy hats. We were given free drinks from the owner, Emilio, while waiting on our hat. Our hatter, Nate, was so down-to-Earth and personable. On top of everything, we were just genuinely made to feel special. New Year, new hat. My family chipped in and put some funds down for a new hat for me; my current one is 23 years old and it shows a bit. I did a lot of research and pretty much settled on Double R as my primary stop and I'm glad I did. I took a drive down their today from Avery Ranch and it was well worth going a bit out of my way. They are right on the main street and easy to find. The entire crew there is supper friendly and we quickly zeroed in on exactly what I was looking for. This gent named Angel helped me out and was real helpful. They stock mostly American Hat brand items (made in Bowie, Texas) and I have to be honest and say this is the single best fitting hat I've ever put on. Fits me better than a Stetson and I was shocked how good it felt. It's well made and even though I picked out an X40 it looks and feels as good as an X100 from either Stetson or Resistol. The goal was to find an authentic hat house that was also where real cowboys and hands actually got their hats--not some tourist shop selling crap. Living in south west Florida--as much as I wanted a 100x felt hat--we needed to get some straw hats that would stand up to the Florida heat. My son was getting married in Hawaii. He wanted 3 chairs reserved for special items from his 3 grandparents that have passed on and unable to attend. He told me how great it would be to have one of his grandpa Meyers' cowboy hats there. I still have one of my dads 35 year old felt cowboy hats, but not in very good condition.
