My mom came here for both of her cataracts and overall it was a pretty good experience. The office employees and nurses were all really nice and the office itself is very clean and well kept. I really enjoyed their snack corner where they have a keurig so you can make yourself a cup of coffee and they had snacks and even fresh cookies at times too. It was a nice added touch. The doctor is very quick and you mainly deal with the nurses and office staff. For follow up they're pretty straight to the point and make sure you are healing well. From start to finish we had the consult, the surgery, the day after surgery check up, the other eye surgery, the other eye day after check up, and a week after that the last post surgery check up. I really liked the office and my mom has has no issues. There are a lot of negative reviews and I think if they went over the documents in more detail about the hazards of eye surgery they would have less bad reviews... but for us, knowing what this was going to entail? Our experience with Texas Eye and Laser Center was deeply disappointing, particularly given the nature of the patient population they serve. Many of their patients are elderly and have mobility limitations, hearing loss, or not surprising, vision impairments, yet the staff often seemed entirely unprepared or unwilling to accommodate those realities. Throughout the exam process, patients' names are only used when they are initially called from the waiting room. Once a patient begins making their way toward the sound of their name, the staff member has often already disappeared around a corner or behind a door, leaving confused patients trying to figure out where to go. In exam rooms with dim lighting, patients are told simply to "sit here," but when they ask where exactly, staff make little to no effort to guide them physically or verbally. I witnessed an elderly patient who appeared very unsteady on her feet being cut off twice by the same staff member as she hurried a file to the front desk and then back toward the exam rooms. During the second pass, the patient lost her balance and barely able to steady herself with her cane. The staff member did not stop or acknowledge the situation. I understand the office can become busy, but this interaction created a clear patient safety concern. A fall could easily have occurred, potentially resulting in serious injury. The impatience displayed during eye exams was also surprising and frustrating. Patients were frequently interrupted before they could finish reading the chart, with staff members either blurting out the letters themselves or switching to a new line before the patient had completed the current one. For an ophthalmology practice, the lack of patience and awareness shown toward people with vision difficulties is difficult to understand. Unfortunately, while the exam office had serious issues, the surgery center experience was even worse. Everyone is entitled to an occasional "off" day, but when the same problems occur again just weeks later during a second surgery, it suggests a pattern of "business as usual" rather than an isolated lapse. The most troubling aspect was the front desk staff at the surgery center. The woman working the desk was consistently rude, dismissive, and unhelpful. She either would not answer basic questions or could not provide clear answers. Rather than assisting elderly or mobility-impaired patients, she remained behind her computer screen barking instructions across the waiting room, leaving everyone confused about who she was addressing. When questions were asked, she regularly interrupted people only to respond with variations of, "That's how we do it," which is not a meaningful explanation or acceptable patient communication. The communication and coordination throughout the surgical process appeared disorganized and inconsistent. Even staff in the exam office seemed aware of the dysfunction and expressed frustration themselves. One major issue was the lack of consideration for transportation planning. Surgery check-in times were not provided until the day before the procedure, leaving families scrambling to arrange work schedules, school drop-offs and pick-ups, transportation, and caregiving responsibilities with virtually no notice. This entire process reflects a significant lack of leadership and patient-centered planning. An experienced office manager should be able to establish predictable and accommodating procedures that better support the staff, nurses, doctors, patients, and their families. Just as importantly, management should ensure that front desk staff receive proper customer service and accessibility training so they can interact respectfully and effectively with a patient population that often requires additional patience, guidance, and compassion. There may be capable medical professionals working here; however, the overall patient experience is overshadowed by poor communication, impatient staff, and a concerning lack of empathy for the people they serve. read more

So far so good Doctor Hu is a Golden God Flew out from San Francisco a few weeks ago to get an evaluation after my HMO in California told me there were no lenses available to correct vision and that they could only take out my injury induced cataract. In addition because of the shape of my eye no corrective lenses were available as I was football shaped instead of basketball shaped My dad said no way that's BS come out and have Texas Eye Institute evaluate My first appointment lasted three hours while they evaluated my condition and put me through every test imaginable. The staff is incredibly friendly and knowledgeable and answered all of my questions. I flew out last Tuesday and had the surgery on Thursday by Friday. The next day I was at 20/20 in my right eye with a vivity toric lens. That's right 24 hours after having the surgery I was already at 20/20. Ahead of the curve but I'll take it The surgery center is no different. I mentioned that I was having extreme nerves and they gave me some dissolvable Valium and the procedure went so great. I can't wait to get my other eye done in August after I get back from my trip. They also did one of my father's eyes and he is also at 2020 at 84 years old. Highly recommend this place read more

Read all of the fine print before getting cataract surgery and lens placement. I had cataract surgery in October 2025. It is now February 2026. The surgery did not work as well as it should have. I am having constant issues cannot see as clearly as I was led to believe that I would be able to. There is only a 90 day follow up on the surgery. Now I'm having to pay more for visits and follow ups of the original surgery to see if there is anything that can be done so I can see clearly. Which will cost more money . All I'm saying is make sure that you know what you're getting into before you have the surgery here. The staff and Drs are great, no problem at all with the staff. I'm my opinion I wasted thousands of dollars for nothing. read more

Front desk staff at Hurst lie to and don't care about patients. Every visit you have to wait at least an hour from your appointment time. Dr. Hu was very rough with me, I felt everything and he raised his voice at me because I said ouch. 3 months later I still have fluttering in my left eye, they said just wait it might take a year. No responsibility that something might be wrong with lens. They tried to charge me even though it was a post op appointment. Go out of town if you have to...don't go here. I would be careful of choosing this office. Dr. Hu performed my cataract surgery and have had nothing but issues since. I developed severe dry eye after surgery, a condition he did not warn of. I purchased the upgraded Pan Optic lens for an addition $8500 in hopes not having to wear glasses. The prescription was off and over 3 yrs later he performed PKR on my right eye and it went from +.75 to a -1.25 that eventually settled to -.75 after 7months. So now I have to wear prescription sunglasses. He also performed laser surgery to eliminate scar tissue that had formed and now I have a floater that looks like a cursor chasing every thing I look at. There is veiling that occurs and I was told that is a separation of some membrane in the eyeball. Overall I was better off with cataracts. They make you sign more disclaimers then giving you sound advise. read more

Let me just start out by saying this clinic does not respect your time at all. I took my mother for a cataract evaluation and we were there for 3 hours and 45 mins. The testing was thorough however, once we got to meet with Dr. Hu, he was very unprofessional. He took a Quick look at my mother's eyes and said "yeppp, you got cataracts!" "Why have you waited so long to have surgery?" He then tried to sell his lenses and said that the old traditional implant nobody goes with anymore. Once he started talking about multifocal implants my mother had several questions. He quickly ignored her and rushed out of the room. Needless to say he was very unprofessional and entitled. He also has a very heavy accent and is hard to understand especially if elderly. If you have cataracts I recommend going to key-Whitman. They have locations all over DFW and their surgeons actually give you more of their time AND answer all questions! read more

Start with "Klara" - their telephone/text transcription portal. Missed calls or messages from patient or staff are linked to and get transcribed to Klara. Supposedly, staff and patients can keep up with where they are in the process. It is abundantly clear that this difficult to navigate portal was never designed for seniors with poor and compromised vision. It's just a CYA for Texas Eye and Laser Surgery or other similar affiliates using "Klara" Patients get the date of their surgery in advanced but not the time to show until the day before. Really? This is only convenient for NTxE&L; Not patients No consideration or accomidation or for patients with hearing issues. You inform them - they pretty much ignore it. This was not an issue with postop nurse, Ashley. Anesthesiologist- did not put me under well enough or respond (when I signaled twice (twice)) for more anesthesia. Was he there (Dr. Crumb) was it a hearing issue? I don't know. Procedure - I feel confident that Dr. Hu did a good job. Despite working on a patient that was in serious pain fear and confusion the entire time (maybe ten minutes). I COULD PAINFULLY FEEL EVERY SCRAPE AND POKE I knew, from what others had told me from their experience this wasn't right and I likewise knew there was no stopping or pulling back. Just had to bear down for the entire time and take getting poked in the eye with a sharp stick. A VERY long, maybe ten minutes. Recovery - no problem. Though, amusingly, they send you off with a very old role of cloth bandage tape to re-affix your eyepatch. The tape has a virtually impossible to find the starting point with good vision much less after surgery. Once student found, the tape just sheds into unusable narrow, short strips. Tape may seem a small point but it is very indicative of how unconcerned the lot - Doctors down to staff are for the needs of very vulnerable patients. And you can look at the pictures of the lifeless, grey, chrome, and white decor of their office sweet. They decorated from the heart. read more

After waiting on Dr Hu for 2and a half to three hours with each visit, he gives you almost none of his time. He is disrespectful and dismissive of his patients, he doesn't listen and talks over you as you try to speak. When I tried to ask something, he actually said "Yeah yeah, you'll see much better now" as he was turning his back on me and walking out of the room. The worst experience I've ever had with a doctor. My appt was at 2:30. I left without seeing the doctor after 2hrs15min of waiting. I asked how much longer the wait would be and was told 2 more patients were ahead of me. Heck, I was the only one left in the waiting room. Patients that came later than me were gone. What a horrible service. When I asked what's taking long, the response was totally unacceptable ... he's only one doctor. Of course I would like patients to receive proper care but to wait that long is absurd. Dr. Ranelle and his staff are all nice and pleasant but I don't have 2 hrs to waste for a visit that would only take 10-15 minutes of the doc's time. I have had myophia since I was in elementary school and I have always been tempted by doing Lasik so I can get rid of glasses and contacts (-5.75 / -4.5 with stigmatism) forever. However, when dealing with stuff like eyes, you want to find a highly skilled and reputable doctor. Dr. Hu was recommended to me by my relative who lives in Texas. I finally decided to make a trip from New York to Dallas two weeks ago to see Dr. Hu and hope my eyes could be qualified for Lasik. The scheduling of appointments was fairly easy thanks to my family living in Texas. I went in on a Monday morning for the initial checkup. The reception area was gut renovated and feels clean and professional. The front desk staff verified my appointment and asked me to fill in some information. I waited for about 15 min (very short compared to the wait time in NYC) until I was greeted by a technician to start a series of tests. The whole checkup period took about 1.5 hours including various waiting in between, but the process is very comprehensive and everyone (Katie, Toni, Dr. Wagner, Dr. Hu) I met demonstrated great professionalism. After completing the checkup, Dr. Hu told me my eyes were qualified for the SMILE treatment. I confirmed my surgery details and left. A few days later I came back for the surgery. I was very nervous in the beginning but Dr. Hu quickly helped me calm down and explained what I should expect in each step in detail. The entire surgery only took about 20 minutes or so and I immediately felt I was able to see much better right after. I went back for two post-op checkups before I flew back to New York. The patient experience was amazing throughout. Thanks to Dr. Hu and his team, I can finally see all the ADs clearly on the NYC subways now! read more

Horrible experience with Dr. Jerry Hu's customer service. I never received surgery so I cannot speak on his techniques however, he was extremely disrespectful. I waited 2.5 to see him. I understand that happens but I went in the hall and asked if they knew what number I was in line to be seen. The nurses said I was next so I went back in my room. He eventually came in and I had my consultation. He was quick and in a hurry to get out of the room. I was asking questions because I was going to have to have surgery on my eyes so I was hesitant. He answered my questions in a condescending manner as if he never makes mistakes as a doctor. After he walked out, the nurse was doing my paperwork and told me I needed to go back to the waiting room to wait for the surgical tech (or something?) and I sighed and said, "oh man, I've been here 2.5 hours already. Do you know how long that takes?" Dr. Hu came back in the room and said, "There will always be a wait for me so if you say one more word about waiting on me, I will drop you as a client." So I said, "DROP ME THEN because that's not how you talk to people." And he said, "Okay, great, goodbye, have a great life." I understand I could have been more patient even though it had been 2.5 hours. I was just asking when I would be seen as I had no idea how much longer I'd be there and I had not allocated 3+ hours for a consultation. Always a positive experience. Been a patient for a number of years and have always had a good experience. Dr. Ranelle put implants in both eyes 12 years ago and everything went well and I experienced no problem. He's a great doctor but unfortunately he did retire. Dr. Hu is my new doctor and he's great also. Dr. Head next door does my annuals and he's the best Optometrist I've ever had. This place does get pretty busy and a wait is almost always going to happen. No problem here, I don't want a doctor in a hurry. Place is always well maintained and clean. The office in Hurst is very busy and they see a lot (a lot) of people. But the system works well. And the office is well run and very clean. I visited a number of times over the care plan. Brace yourselves for a long detailed review. I flew from AZ to Texas two weeks ago to have Lasik done by the doctors of Texas Eye and Laser Center. I was supposed to arrive in Texas on Wednesday evening because I had my pre on appointment early in the am Thursday, my airline made an error on my flight, rescheduled me for an early morning flight on Thursday, making me miss my pre-op appointment. I called TELC, they were very understanding and pushed my appointment for the afternoon, that was such a relief and will be forever be grateful to their appointment department. Thursday afternoon I arrived to Texas Eye and Laser Center, ladies in the front desk were very cordial and friendly, I couldn't see their smiling faces due to protective masks but can see their smiling eyes and hear it on their voices. I waited less than 7 minutes to be seen. Their back office staff and techs were very sweet, not sure if is their Texan personalities or their office culture, either way, I was very happy to have chosen TELC. After all the pre-op exams were done, it was determined that I only qualified for PRK and not Lasik, like I have hoped, to say that I was disappointed it is an understatement, but that all changed when Dr. Ranelle walked in, my first impression of him was very pleasant, he has a great sense of humor, all my worries were put at ease by both his demeanor and his knowledge. The next day, the day of the pocedure, the staff were sweet and kind, I was taken in to an exam room where a sweet gentleman asked me how I was feeling, nervous I answered, he assured me that it was normal, we got to talking about where we were both from, he turned out to be originally from NY where I am from, that casual talk eased my nerves. I was walked to the procedure room, where Dr. Ranelle greeted me with a smile. He explained everything he was doing as he performed the surgery, 20 minutes later, I was done with the painless procedure. I was walked back to the waiting room where I dozed off, with my eyes closed, I hear the sweet voice of a female staff member, concerned, she asked me if I was OK, if I needed transportation, I explained that I was waiting for my husband, he was being seen by one of the doctors. She walked me to an empty exam room where she leaned the chair back so I can have privacy as I waited. The next day follow up and the week post op appointment went well. My recovery was painless. I would like to give this place a better review, but I can't. They overbook all the time. It is always over 30 minutes before you even get called to see anyone. The last time I was there, it was over an hour before I went back for the basic eye test then another 45-50 minutes before I actually got to see the doctor. I was there for over two hours. I keep going here so I can get my right eye vision corrected after my first cataract surgery they did 3 months ago. People complain, but it is always overbooked. read more

After reading other reviews I was a little worried when I showed up and the place was busy. I had prepared for a wait and took a book, I didn't need it. I was taken back within about 5 minutes and the appointment was very informative. I decided to get lasik and showed back up on the day of my appointment and they told me to plan on 1 1/2 hours. Got there at 7:30 and was in my car at 9:00. They were very prompt and on time. I'm the kind of person that would have liked to know all of the procedures before we got started instead of during the procedure, but all of the doctors and assistants were great. read more

When I discovered that I had Cataracts about 5 years ago and living in California, the doctor there did about 100 tests and it seemed like he was just having me come in to pay my copays. Then when he was setting up my surgery it was like 6 months out and then covid hit. I moved to Texas and went to TEALC and Dr. Ranelle got me in for surgery in less than a week. Dr. Ranelle and his staff were great and surgery was quick and smooth. Thank you TEALC for allowing me to see again and I highly recommend these guys. read more

This place does not take your own time into consideration at all. I was there waiting well over 2 hrs for a 30 second procedure. They just keep a whole waiting room of people sitting for hours and they have all rehearsed apologies. A whole waiting room full of people with Covid going on. What the heck. Then to top it off, they sent me another bill after I paid my bill before leaving. They tacked on other stuff after I left and just said sorry, you have to pay it. I will not go back there again. Be prepared to wait an excessively long time in an incredibly cold waiting room. Be prepared to pay a variety of copays etc... nickel and dime for each provider too I guess. My poor 86 year old dad was told not to eat for six hours before coming in and then sat in the waiting room while staff went in and out to with their lunch which was delivered while we were waiting. Not blaming for them eating lunch but we were 45 minutes early for our 11:15 appointment and it's 12:40now and we're still waiting. He did have a good outcome with the first eye so I'll say that for them. read more

Would you like to be almost entirely awake during your cataract surgery? How would you like your eyes to feel like they are being biopsied? How about a red-hot poker being stabbed into your eyes? When I complained about the pain right after the first procedure, I was told that they were "running low on the Versed." They told me that before the surgery on the other eye, I should mention the pain and they would increase the medication. Not so. In fact, I suffered more during the second surgery than the first. And you will be told that if at any time you feel pain, you should tell them and they will increase the pain medication in the i.v. Ha ha ha. They ignore any cries of pain, because the assembly line must continue. Think of the I Love Lucy episode about the assembly line and the chocolates, only these are your eyes that feel like they are being gobbled up. Of course you can't be on pain medication; as soon as you're wheeled out of surgery, they immediately get you up to leave. If this sounds tempting to you, then I can elaborate on even more amenities at this house of horrors - everything is set up like an assembly line. I think the poor miserable employees have a quota that they must meet by the end of the day, because you are rushed through your evaluation, have to submit to their hard-sell approach to the costs of your surgery, and be the helpless and long-suffering victim of their numerous errors of paperwork. Oh, and beware the "facilities fee" because you have to pay for a place for them to operate on you each time, and also an "insurance fee" even though it is part of their company, as I found out from doing some research. The anesthesiologist charged $2,000 and I don't know why; I could have taken a Tylenol and it would have had the same results. I paid $1,940.00 when Humana had assured me that I would pay $255 for the total package. Texas Eye and Laser Center (Kim and Marybelle) told my husband on 11/30/2022 that they had not even billed Humana or Medicare and they were not required to. Humana told me on 11/30/2022 that the appeal will be decided on Dec. 13 but they were still waiting for the paperwork from the provider (per Desiree). I was told I was only had to pay $255.00 and I paid $1,940.00. The first person that I spoke to about the appeal told me that I was owed $1,430.00. To top it all off, the corneal implants are very visible; I now have two Terminator eyes. Never go there, never ever!!!!!! read more

Terrible. I had to have a cornea transplant performed by Dr. Hu due to Keratoconus. The procedure went well, but was never able to see out of the eye. After 2 weeks I was totally blind in that eye, still am. Had to see a Retina Specialist, and it was to late. Originally Dr Hu said it was a bad donor tissue, but later said he made a mistake, and it was another patient he was talking about. I have all kinds of blood work, cultures done, and no issue with my system, even though he blames it on me. They said there is nothing they can do, and will not return any calls. read more

I would recommend blocking your entire day if you have an appointment at Texas Eye & Laser Center. I purposely schedule my appointments for the earliest time slot I can get so I don't have all of the backlog in front of my appointment if I were to schedule a later time. First I waited 2 months to get on their schedule for my annual eye exam, booked it in late November 2020 and the first appointment I could get was 1/21/21. A week before my scheduled visit I was inundated with phone calls from the clinic reminding me of the visit and to make sure I was there on time. The day of my appointment I arrive 15 minutes early for my 8:10A appointment, before they allow you to enter the waiting area they screen you for fever and had a list of covid related questions you have to answer, then I was allowed inside to check in. 2/3rds of the seats in the waiting room are taped off not allowing people to sit I them, you would think if 2/3rd's of their normal patient load was not there, they would be able to get the patients in and out much quicker. After sitting in the waiting room for 35 minutes and watching several other people come in and get called back, I went to the reception desk to check on my appointment, I was told they were getting the room set up and they had three doctors on staff that morning so it shouldn't be much longer. 20 minutes later and several more people came in and were called back, I decided that my time is as valuable as their time , so I left.....NEVER TO RETURN THERE AGAIN. I had a similar experience the year prior, so not sure why I decided to go back, but I did. read more

I have just completed cataract surgery with both my eyes, by a man who is a giant in the medical profession, Dr. Hu, a great eye surgeon. He and his partner, Dr. Ranelle, have the reputation of being good surgeons, and being owners of a medical practice where the support employees are giving their very best everyday. Patients are the center of the focus. Employees are kind and attentive even under extremely busy conditions. While it sometimes seems the office is overly crowded, it is merely a result of having a good reputation and many who want the experience these doctors offer patients. And I learned once called taken to be prepped for one's surgery, everyone is kind, thorough, and very professional. Did I sometimes wonder what was taking so long? Yes, of course.
