Not only have I had a good experience here, but so have my elderly acquaintances. We all agree that the people at registration are kind and friendly. The doctors listen and treat our problems the right way the first time. Dr. Nieman helped me when I had some serious concerns about an eye. She diagnosed the problem during that initial visit, and I left with a prescription that healed the problem. This is definitely our go-to eye care location!

The doctors are fantastic but getting to them is maddening. The staff is terribly rude (annoyed, it seems) and the waits are long.

Based solely on Michelle's…read morereview I checked out the training of Dr. Lindsey and found we both attended the same med school. That was enough for me. I scheduled an appointment (I was able to be seen the next day) and the visit went smoothly. The office staff was friendly and efficient, and Dr. Lindsey was delightful. Every good thing Michelle said about Dr. Lindsey was true for me, too. We had a good time chatting about faculty we knew in common. My fears of an eye infection were groundless (my discomfort was most likely due to allergies so she gave me some eyedrops). I had her do a full refraction and eye exam since I was already there. She found my current eyeglass prescription was fine and didn't need to be changed, and that my eyes were perfectly healthy (she said they were likely the healthiest she'd see all day). I'll see her again in a year, and look forward to it. If you need an ophthalmologist who is well-trained in diseases of the eye as well as the normal eyeglass and contact lens fitting, then I recommend Dr. Lindsey. Other physicians who are members of the group practice (The Eye Institute of Austin) appear to be equally stellar in their pedigrees.

She listens well and proposes workable solutions for every little complaint - like loading me up with samples of various eye drops to try with my finicky gas permeable lenses. Her staff is excellent, as well, and for as long as I've been seeing her, she's had the same assistant, the same optometrist, the same contact lens expert - the longevity in this office just says something. Also, she hates waiting at the doctor's office, so she works hard to stay on schedule, which I so appreciate. Doctors who realize that their patients' time is valuable, too, are much too rare. I'd recommend Dr. Lindsey without reservation.

I got a second opinion from AustinEye just to make sure everything was OK. The doctors agreed on most of the time but they found different long term problems, mostly minor. Dr. Walters is one of the leading eye doctors in Austin and he goes to Africa and South America to do free cataracts. The biggest difference in these two businesses is in the surgical care they give you. Texan Eye (Texan Surgery Center) has an anesthesiologist present for the surgery, while Austin Eye does the surgeries in-house and gives you a vallium so don't get too excited. Both require a dedicated ride to and from the surgery. I feel they are both good, but chose Texan Eye and am very happy with my decision. The people were very competent, friendly and helpful, and the procedures went smoothly without any problems. It only takes about 10 minutes. No pain, and you are awake the whole time, just a little sleepy. You nap most of the afternoon afterwards.

Good news is I found Dr Tom Walters, MD at Texan Eye who is clearly the most knowledgeable, experienced, and highest rated cataract and laser surgeon with the best record of success in all of Texas and likely beyond. Also good news is he determined that I did not need to get cataract surgery at this time as my vision could be corrected to 20/20 at all distances with glasses with the latest progressive lens technology. My wife and I stopped by their optical shop on the way out and I got fitted with a cool pair of rimless glasses that my wife says make me look "hot"!

I've undergone three surgical procedures here, and, in my experience, the physicians and nurses…read moreare competent and attentive, while the administrative staff are less so. Most recently, when checking in for the procedure, the front desk staffer repeatedly insisted that my procedure involved a lense implant, ignoring my assertions that she was mi staken. She finally relented after realizing that she had confused me with another patient. On another occasion, I was given a post-procedure follow-up appointment with the wrong physician. On balance, I believe that Texan Eye provides an acceptable level of care, but missteps by the administrative staff that I've encountered detract from my overall positive assessment.

I have gone to Texan Eye for several decades. They have excellent doctors and equipment. So why do…read morerate them with 1 star? The 1 star is because of inefficient desk staff cojoined with a policy of badgering patients with a flurry of appointment reminders by text and phone and email. Recently I called to ask for an appointment. After working my way through the automated system and being on hold for 20 minutes, someone decided to help me but said I was a new patient because too much time had passed since my last visit over 2 years ago, so she transferred me to someone else who handles new patients. After another 20 minute hold, and re-verification of info on file yet again, she asked if I wished to receive reminders about the appointment she just set up. I said no. Then 30 minutes later I got a few text reminders, followed by a few email reminders, followed by phone calls from 3 separate numbers, after I had responded 'stop' and then blocked all the above. Ever since COVID, all medical facilities want you to create a profile and fill in paperwork online. Anything more than that, and you are considered an inconvenience. They don't want to be hassled with paperwork or even talking to you. That, and the annoyance that somehow it is considered an acceptable business practice to pester you with multiple reminders, even after you have responded 'yes' and indicate you will arrive, hoping that the messages will stop. But they don't. For those workers who opt in for this lower level care, it's called benevolent indifference, or 'quiet quitting'. they respond to you with the attitude that their time is too important for mundane matters such as talking with you. If you don't comply and make it as easy as possible, then you're a problem. If I created a patient profile on each different site related to all my medical matters, I would have to keep track of countless passwords and verifications. This makes it simpler for them with complete disregard for any inconvenience to me. I guess I'm too old and remember a different time when patients were treated with respect and cared for. It's a hard adjustment to realize that my time and respectful use of my contact info is completely unimportant and meaningless. It's sad really, to find a business that now opts to this lower standard of care. If you're with Texan Eye, please don't respond with a boiler plate message about how important patients are and how hard you work to take care of them. I'm not buying it, and I don't anyone else does either. But thank you for the knowledgeable doctors who do care about their work. It's the only reason I come back.
