The support for solar customers is terrible. 3 months to remove panels so my roof can be repaired. Tesla won't let you schedule reinstall till they are removed. We are very happy with our Solar panels installed several years ago by Solar City/ Tesla. The installers were amazing. They even added lumber supports in our attic. They grounded our hose. We didn't even know it wasn't grounded! They coordinated with Pacific Power. All great. But... I have tried to call the number they have provided several times and have spent soooo long on the phone. Granted I am late paying my bill, I tried to INQUIRE and pay over the phone and also online. I could not find anywhere to pay! Twice they typed out my payment due as $$46.03. I own 2 homes with Tesla Solar. The customer service they provide is so incredibly inept that time/space doesn't allow a full description. After replacing some defective panels on one home, I inquired about a roof leak beneath their new panels. It took numerous (5-6) calls to get them to respond to the leak which finally led to them removing the panels, and then telling me I had to replace the roof. After the replacement, its taken me over 6 months for them to even schedule a time to replace the panels. This involved sending me 2-3 repair agreements which were all addressed to a former owner of the house in 2012. There was never any attempt to contact me, return my calls/emails. I hardly ever write reviews but I cannot believe Tesla's Yelp rating. My first meeting with Tesla was in the morning in early July 2018. I went to their physical address and the people there were awesome. They told me they would give my contact information to a solar representative. Within a 24 hours a solar representative contacted me and a few days later the representative was at my home answering all my questions. It was a laid back and not pushy sales experience. The representative came back a week later and the contract was easy and painless. A really cool thing is Tesla absorbed the state rebate instantly. I'm using fake numbers but suppose the state rebate is $3,000. When you purchase the solar panels they automatically remove $3,000 from the price, which is super convenient! It takes about a month from when you sign the contract until the solar panels are physically installed. During installation Tesla's crew was great. They walked me through the whole process and answered all my questions. They arrived at about 8am and were done at about 1pm. After the panels were installed you can't turn them on because a regulator from the city of Portland has to inspect the installation and the local energy company has to install a meter. When the city inspector arrived he spent about 5-10 minutes looking at the installation and said everything looked great. He was in his 50s and has been electrician for 30-plus years. He was a man of few words but I could easily tell he was man of integrity. While he was filling out his papers I asked him, "Are all solar installations from different companies the same? In other words, are all the installations great?" He said, "No." I then asked, "Suppose you're going to an installation from XYZ company. Do you already know something is going to be wrong with the installation?" He said, "Yes." I then asked, "When you go to a Tesla installation do you assume nothing will be wrong." He said, "Yes." I've had my panels for 6-7 months and I've had no issues. I give Tesla my highest recommendation. read more

They canceled my appointment but never notified me. I took the day off work to be home. It took an hour on hold to find out my appointment was canceled by someone in the company. Tesla's installation destroyed my 30-year roof and I'm unable to sell my house without removing the panels AND forking over $10,000 in repairs. A full-price offer has been terminated over this damage. Installers are required to tie off each time they access the roof. This means drilling multiple holes directly into the roof. They make a 3-5 year repair on the previously 20 year roof by slipping metal under the destroyed shingles and caulking the hole on the top. I am aghast at how a perceived asset to the house has become a tremendous liability. I am seeking remedy with the company and will amend my review through this process. Start to finish, SolarCity provided a professional and efficient process. I met with Omri, the sales guy, who came to our house and explained how the whole process works, the benefits of solar, the different financial options, the tax benefits, etc. He was thorough and knowledgeable and friendly. Next was the survey team (whose names I now forget), who came out and did the full site survey of our home, ensuring the roof was sound and could support the weight of the panels, measuring the slope and azimuth of the roof, checked for obstructions which would shade the panels, etc. They were also friendly, informative, and professional. Very soon afterwards we had a copy of the detailed plans for the installation; I was amazed at the level of detail that was captured and customized for my exact roof and array. A few weeks later, we were scheduling the installation itself, which just happened yesterday. Sean and his team came out and once again, they were friendly, professional, efficient, and very informative. I particularly appreciated Sean taking the time to explain various aspects of the electrical installation (e.g., the inverter, etc.). They discussed options as to my preferred installation location within the garage, where I wanted the conduit to come down from the roof, etc., which I liked (too many contractors seem to have a "whatever is easiest" approach, which is usually NOT what I would have chosen). Now we just need to get the city and utility inspections completed so I can turn it on and start generating clean energy - WOOT! read more

Let me start by saying I really wanted this to work out, and I gave them every opportunity to make things right... I started the process to get solar installed almost a year ago (summer 2017) with SolarCity. I chose them because Telsa has the powerwall- the huge battery backup that can power most of our house when the power goes out during high winds or winter storms. And for their apparent lead in PV development and technology, and since a lot of their hardware is domestically made. Their rather pushy salesman came to the house and did his assessment. He talked over me. He seemed in a rush. He didn't want to take the time to answer many questions. He also made it very clear that I needed to expedite the process if I wanted to get in under 2017 rebates and incentives. So I signed a letter of intent and wrote a deposit check for $500. I sent him my power bills, multiple times. As the weeks passed and nothing happened, I called SolarCity to have them send a different sales person and get their sh*t together, and they said they would. Who shows up at my door? The same salesman. And the whole process begins again. More electric bill requests (Really?) By November I'm at my wits end because there's no movement and the salesman is MIA. After a few exhaustive calls I find out he's been fired. And no one bothered to follow up on his clients? I'm told my case (your "account" becomes a "case" when you complain) is being managed by a supervisor. Which means basically that the supervisor sends you an email introducing you to another salesperson. I feel so special now. They finally send someone out to measure and check my roof and I think the process is finally starting. Early December comes and goes and still nothing. No contract, no indication that my project is even a project because they never gave me any way to login to my account. After more apologetic calls we get the online account figured out, and they promise that as long as the contract is signed by the end of the year and the project is installed and inspected by April 1, that I will be eligible for the $5000 in incentive savings (that's a lot of money! And it disappears in 2018). I get a contract. I sign the contract. I think I'm good to go. January comes and one of their techs show up unannounced at my home to measure more. Later in January I also get an email saying my design is ready and I need to sign off on it and sign more e-papers (one is the incentive paperwork) on my SolarCity account. I sign and have them back within a few days thinking that installation should begin any day now. But I do not have an install date. I do not have any timeline or promise of installation by the date required for the incentives. I see communication between my power company and SolarCity, where the power Co is asking for the shutoff to the solar to be located by the meter for easy access, and then SolarCity saying ok, and then the power co asking again. And again... And then I get the call that there is no powerwall battery available. And then I get the call that they can't install by April 1, and that it's ok because I didn't get the incentive paperwork signed, so there's no rush. But I did. They check again and find it. Unfortunately it wasn't returned before January 1st. Remember this was part of the paperwork they sent me in MID JANUARY. Serious WTF. This ended my relationship with SolarCity. This is the worst follow through and the most unorganized company I've ever worked with. It's as if they're doing me favor by doing their jobs. It's just an indication of things to come if I stuck with it. And my $500 deposit? I'm sure I'll never see that again. Actually, they can keep my $500. As long as it means they never contact me ever again. EVER. As a matter of fact, they can take my money, put it in the glove compartment of a new Model X, stuff that Model X into their next spacecraft, and then fire that thing into Elon Musks Black Hole. Figuratively speaking. But seriously. Cars. Solar. Mars. Pick one and then do it right. Go local. It's a way better experience. read more

I was approached by Tesla / Solar City at Home Depot about adding solar to my home. This was something that I had always interested me. I agreed to have rep come out and look at my house and tell me what kind of a system I could get. After the initial review it seemed apparent that my house was in a very good location and had good orientation for a high value system and we moved forward with the install. The Good: The system works as expected and as promised. The installation took one day and overall was smooth. I had some other electrical work done after the install and that electrician commented that Telsa's work was very good. The bad, and the very, very, very ugly: Telsa sales reps lie. When they created the engineering plans for my system I was supposed to have had two Powerwalls included in the design. I was told it would take 1 week to 10 days to receive the plans for me to sign off on. That process took over a month and I had to call to follow up no less than 7 times. Right before I was supposed to get the plans my sales rep contacted me and said well we are having a supply issue on the Powerwalls you can wait for them to become available (approx July), or you can move forward with the install and we will add 5 years on to the Powerwall warranty (bumping to 15 years). I elected to get the additional warranty and move forward with the install. Took another 3 weeks for them to generate the design for my sign off. I was told at that time that the install would occur in late April (it was now late Feb), it does take time to create the paperwork, get the permits, etc. In late April I was still fighting with them to get the contracts to my local utility for signature. My install did not actually happen until the last week in June. During the intervening months I was forced to act as facilitator between Telsa and my power company in order to get the paperwork needed to generate the building and electrical permits. I had schedule the inspections, all of this was required of me so that I could make and install date that would ensure that I did not miss my state's incentive program and even with me calling, emailing, texting and basically pushing the process forward I only made the incentive date cut off by 3 days. When the powerwalls finally came available (recently) btw I was told they would be available in July(2018) I didn't get notified they were available until Jan (2019) I was told they never said I would get a 15 year warranty... yet another lie on top of I sent that paperwork, I did that form, I submitted that permit application. All in all the PV install took approximately 6 months from the initial consult to the system being turned on, I had to call Telsa probably no less 100 times to push my install forward at every single stage. I am reasonably confident that had I not been on the phone with them 15 times a week I would not have had the install done until 3-4 after it was actually completed. The net: Their process sucks, they have different groups for permits, contracts, utility form submission, etc. none of these groups talk to one another, it is all supposed to be facilitated through your "Sales Adviser." Perhaps there are some good advisers out there but that seems like a pretty risky gamble because mine was either over-utilized, or completely inept, based on my interactions I'm fairly sure he was inept since it took him almost a week to send an email that he promised me each day over 4 days he had "already sent" and he couldn't understand why I hadn't received it. Turns out btw that the customer service center was able to send the exact same email which I received about 30 seconds after they said it was sent... so yeah inept. Do yourself a favor and use a local install company that is not a gigantic corporation that is way more focused on selling cars than they are on doing solar power arrays. I have spoken with a few other companies now that I'm looking at someone else to do my battery backup install and according to them my experience is not unique in fact it is the norm. read more

I have been trying since November 2020 to get "Your Solar Inverter Stopped Working" issue resolved. I just keep getting false promises and no updates on status. I have continued to fill out form requested in their email notifications, with assurances that a technician will contact me. I receive these email notifications on a monthly basis, sometimes as many as 4 in one month. In one phone conversation, which I initiated, I requested they stop my auto pays but no dice. Now I am paying a PGE bill that is 5 times the amount I was paying (PGE base fee only) as well as their monthly fee. Excuses given: covid has slowed down production of replacement panels, no work order in system, replacements need reengineering because they are more efficient. read more

We have had the greatest experience with Solar City!! We live in SE Portland and are working on stabilizing our fixed expenses in retirement. One of our friends in the neighborhood had Solar City installed at their home and they loved it. So we checked it out. Amre came out and gave us a proposal. He was very up front about the costs and we determined what worked best for us. We did have to have trees removed on one side of our house but we had already been talking about that because of their size and mess. I was actually happy to have a good reason to take the trees down. Amre also referred a company to do a FREE energy assessment and they were able to give us some great ideas and suggestions to make our home more efficient! They went under our house and found holes in our ductwork and made some other suggestions that we will take them up on this spring. The installers showed up on time and were clean, efficient and very clear about what they were going to do and where they were going to do it. They even suggested some minor changes to the location of the meters and boxes that work much better. Their work passed all the inspections with flying colors! The electrical inspector said that Solar City had some of the cleanest work he inspected. We were happy to hear this! Hands down, this company is awesome! We have been very happy with everything they have done for us and will recommend them to all our friends. We did not feel that they had a hard sell approach at all. They just did a great job following up with us and we are very, very happy with the results! read more

Go with a local option--these people are centered in CA and really don't care about you or your home and left the distinct impression that they only really care about making money. They made me wait months simply to tell me that I would have to finance the project myself. I initially qualified but apparently the specs of my home don't satisfy their requirements--and it took six months for them to finally inform me of this. I had to contact them myself to find out what the delay was all about. They did not stay in touch, and my best guess is that is because they doubted the profit margin at hand. Furthermore, the crew they sent out to my home--who had to "inspect" my roof twice--left a huge wad of chewing gum on my backyard fence. Stay classy, Solar City. As I mentioned previously they are a California company. As a Native Oregonian, I am tired of rich ,white , Southern Californians moving to this beautiful state and driving the rental and housing rates up, taking all of the jobs and contributing to gentrification. The state (including the city of Portland) just keeps getting whiter, blander and more yuppified. Actually, I am sick of almost everyone who moves here. Stay where you are please. This city is becoming much too crowded (the traffic is significantly worse than it was even a year ago)Plus Californians (especially those from the Southern part) do not know how to drive in the snow let alone the rain. Be very careful with the estimates they send you... even though the salesperson will swear that leasing is a much better option than purchasing the numbers don't work out when you consider the tax credits and incentives that SolarCity takes from you. I wouldn't have left a review if this was all I had to say though... the financials aren't the worst thing about my experience. What really turned me off to SolarCity was the hard sell. The salesperson I spoke with was very pushy when I tried to turn him down, to the point where his borderline abusive emails made me suspect that the company puts way too much pressure on its salespeople to close. It sounds like others have had positive experiences though, so maybe the problem isn't systemic. Either way, think twice before sending your information to SolarCity. They aren't offering a good deal for Oregonians (since our incentives are great), and at least one person working there is not very nice. read more

I had the same experience as in Kawika's review. Borderline abusive emails when I started to get doubtful about their deal. WIthout ever coming to my house they wanted me to to sign a long complex onesided binding contract. I had to sign this contract before they would send their guy out to do the "home site audit". The two other local companies I talked with later sent knowledgeable people out who actually climbed up on the roof and measured the suitability of my site before talking contract. These companies found that my roof did not get enough sun and suggested ground-mounting. When I pointed this out to my Solar City guy, the nasty emails started. read more

Our home has had a Solar City PV installation for almost four years. Solar City was extremely responsive to our request for analysis of our site and quote. Installation was completed expeditiously, and the quality of the installation was very high (the city inspector who came to certify the structure told us that Solar City always has the highest quality construction). Our roof was not suitable for a large solar PV array, so Solar City installed it on the ground near our home. (We are fortunate to have a large lot.) In almost four years the solar panels have consistently produced more electricity than our home has consumed, even though we live in (allegedly) rainy western Oregon. Our solar array has added a total of over 62.8 MWh of electricity to the grid since installation. On one occasion we had the need for a service call. Solar City responded promptly and replaced a non-functioning controller panel without cost to us. Otherwise, our solar installation has been maintenance-free. I am an enthusiastic supporter of Solar City and give them my highest recommendation. read more

Bought our new house in Livermore, Ca it had already "Solar City" solar panels on our roof. Previous owner had a contract that they were stuck to, for the close of escrow we couldn't stop service with them.... RIDICULOUS though, we tried talking with the manager also his superior they wouldn't let us drop this service! The seller of our house let us know that around Christmas with all of the lights / decorations ran w/electricity and having the A/C the solar helps out a lot. We've been at our new house for one month, receive a bill for over $200.00.... WHAT? I wish we were able to go threw some other solar service that would actually be beneficial to us TO SAVE US MONEY, not them! THIS SOLAR SERVICE IS HORRIBLE read more

We have been solar for about a year and a half now and I couldn't be happier with our experience. We scheduled a visit with a rep that came out to our home and answered every last question we had. On his computer, he showed us what our solar panel line up might look like. He told us that if it was something that we decided was right for us, that someone would be in contact to get the ball rolling. I felt very "taken care of" the entire time. Our contact person was always quick to reply back to me when I had questions and they did all the work. I just had to make myself be available for the installation, inspections, and to sign paperwork. Our solar panels produce about half of the energy we consume per year. Solar City just completed the installation of the panels on my house. I very rarely (if ever give) such high reviews but I had a GREAT experience through multiple stages of the process. I started the initial discussions with Matthew Hansen. He was a great sales rep providing all the answers to my questions and concerns. He diligently followed up with me over a month till I was comfortable with the decision. I was impressed by Matt's work ethics to follow up with me at exactly the day and time we agreed to in prior meetings. Matt was very patient and never pushy. My inspection and installation was also very smooth. In fact Solar City went out of its way to get me a early date for the site inspection. After the site inspection, I decided to increase the size of the system to be installed on my house. Again Solar City worked with me to get me the exact system I desired, even though it meant a change to the original plans I agreed to. Their flexibility and focus on Customer Satisfaction was very impressive. After the inspection, Solar City helped get the required approvals from our Home Owners Association (HOA) by providing me all the documentation I needed to submit On the day of installation, the crew was on time and executed the installation in a professional manner. They explained me the the changes they had to make to my electric panel and the features of the different equipment they installed. They answered all my questions and never seemed to be in a hurry to get out. I am happy with the whole process. Every single Solar City employee I came across was very friendly and went out of their way to meet my requests (as long as they are reasonable). I would recommend this company to anyone. read more

So I got very interested in their solar project when a friend of mine had it installed in Portland. After several visits we settled on a contract for a lease system. I thought it was home free and on to the next stage of the Audit and home inspection. First downfall they canceled my appointment before I was leaving for town for 4 months so it had to wait till I got back. The inspection happened and it was mentioned that my trees may have to be pruned and that was no big deal to me. I just received a call today informing me that the only for it to work,was if I had two beautiful maples completely removed. NO WAY. I had a couple of inspections prior and there was never any mention of tree removal only trimming. What a load of shit. I suspect they saw my older home which they had already in prior meetngs and realized the cost to install was too high for what the contract was and are looking for an out. Sadly I do not have the metering systems they have so I cannot check what the actual estimates were for output. All I have to say is they put me through many hours of meetings and calls for nothing to show. Nothing good to say about Solar City. read more

As part of the solar panel offer put together by Solarize Northeast (NE Coalition of Neighborhoods), we had Solar City put in 2.1 kW of panels (~10 panels) on our NE home (~Alberta) in July 2010. I had little knowledge of solar and it is a huge investment, but Solar City's staff were professional, detail-oriented, efficient, and patient from beginning to when I flipped the switch. The sales rep, Sean Larkin, must have done 5 complete system designs for us and answered tons of questions - quickly! The installation took LESS time than estimated - unheard of! We couldn't be more pleased with the company or their Portland-based staff. read more

From start to finish our experience with Solar City has been 100% outstanding. First of all, the initial meeting with rep. Jamie Eldrett was very informative and the subsequent contractual details were handled very well with our own "concierge" via emails, phone, etc. All the paperwork went smoothly after the engineering site inspection was approved. Much of the paperwork was all done electronically, sustainably. The installation was very impressive as the crew worked well together and the electrician on the team was a total pro. Every component tested well after installation. Even the city inspector said that Solar City has a very good reputation in their office. Needless to say we passed inspection flawlessly and are now ready to turn on the system after we clear with Portland General Electric. This has been a great experience and we look forward to producing a significant portion of our annual electrical needs with fossil fuel-free solar power. We found Solar City to be professional, prompt, accurate, courteous, and helpful. "Going solar" is a big decision, so you want people and a company with the experience and know-how to get it done right. We took the option to buy our tax credit from Solar System, and let them sell power back to PGE. We don't own the system, but we benefit from the lower rates. I have really, really wanted to like SolarCity but I'm finished. Repeatedly, I get the impression that it is run by a bunch of happy kids who do not coordinate their functions. Initially, this issue resulted in an installation that did not meet design expectations. When I raised that issue, I just got a shucks sorry response. Now, I have a leak in my roof from the panel mounts . I called them. They said that the scheduling office would call within 48 hours. I called them back about 5 days later after not hearing from them. Call center passed message to scheduling center and an appointment was set up for one week later. One week? Isn't a leak kind of important? Their response was we can't just have crews sitting around and this was the best they could offer. As always, they were very polite. Next time, I'll deal with another company that has their act together. Elon, maybe you're better at promotion than operations. read more

Okay I'm getting a starbucks card for my review good or bad... We had a good & painless experience getting our solar installed. They walked us through each step, made the appointments for city & utility co inspections and let me know what stuff I had to be present for & how long things would take. The intall did take alittle longer due to needing a bigger breaker box, but when they needed to make changes I was always asked/ informed to see if that was convenient. The lead installer ( forgot his name!) was a real gem- he walked through turning the system on & answered questions. The system blends into the roofline well & I can monitor our solar production online hour by hour! I may try to post a pic of the solar later cause I'm not so tech-savy! read more

The people I worked with were great. They knew what they were doing and never dissapointed me. I feel I can recomed them to any one. But be warned, you will talk to / work with about a dozen people. It is a long (2-3 month), complicated process and totaly worth it. read more

Did the online form on 07/07 that stated someone would contact me within 2 business days. Did not hear from Solar City - so on 07/16 called and was transferred to someone named Alex. Went right to his voicemail and I left a message. Today 07/21 - called again and told the person what I've stated above. She said let me find someone to talk to you and was then disconnected. It appears that SolarCity is not interested in giving me a bid for my house. We ARE going to go Solar and wanted to go with Solar World product - but if I can't reach anyone to give me a bid - I'll have to look at other companies. read more
