This place really felt like a scam to me. If you're sitting in the chair and the Dentist comes out…read moreto tell you need a deep cleaning on your first visit, just say no and get the normal cleaning then find a new dentist. This happened to be one of the only dentists that was in-network for my dental insurance so I decided to check it out. Visit 1: I showed up and they took x-rays which is not unusual for a new dentist. What was odd was just how many they took and how painful it was with all the heavy pieces of plastic jammed in my mouth. I straight up told them it was never this time consuming, difficult or painful at any other office before. The dentist comes out, looks at the x-rays and tells me I need a deep clean. I think my wife has had this before so I knew it was a real thing but having been told this the moment I met this person felt a bit weird. Apparently it's not all covered by insurance but i figure it couldn't be that bad considering that it should be in network and covered at 90%. At this point I was given a choice but they were really pressuring me to get the cleaning which they do over 2 visits since it can make your jaw hurt on the side they do it on. I reluctantly agreed to it. The experience itself was pretty brutal. At one point when they were shooting me up with all the novocain, some dribbled down my throat and I felt i couldn't breathe and started having a panic attack. Luckily I was able to zone out and listen to my audio book while she took what felt like a jackhammer to my teeth. After I'm all done they show me how much I need to pay and I was like why is this not being covered all the way? It took them a minute but they figured out they keyed in the same quadrant twice by mistake so they corrected that. (By pen but they assured me it was fixed in the computer as well) Then they said, I needed to schedule the second appointment for the other half of my mouth within one month or the insurance wouldn't cover it as the same procedure or something like that. There was 1 appointment available in the entire time frame so I made it work. In retrospect, their non-chalant attitude around that aspect felt a bit odd. Visit 2: The Second side wasn't as bad. No panic attack this time . They did give me fluoride without asking which I wasn't pleased about. I prefer to use it at home instead of paying out of pocket for the price gouged version that dentists give you. Anyways, I paid my balance and they said I need to schedule a followup in like a month. I've been going to the dentist around twice a year for most of my life and this made 3 visits in 3 months. Visit 3: This time I'm seeing a hygienist. She was actually pretty good but I couldn't help but notice the guy one chair over. It's obviously his first day at the dentist and he's getting the same hard sell to get the deep clean. At this point I just had a really bad feeling about this place. I was wondering what they were going to tell me about my teeth this time. In the end I was kind of surprised that they didn't have anything bad to say about my teeth. Instead it was, "We'll keep monitoring your progress". Which is why I was extra surprised when the person at the counter tells me they want me to come back in 3 months. Apparently I'm on their list for periodontal cleanings now? I was like okay whatever. I paid my balance and scheduled. As the date was coming up I just kept dreading going back there so I canceled the appointment. I was shocked when they responded back, okay we'll cancel the appointment and send you a link to pay your outstanding balance. Wat? Since I had been paying my copays and outstanding balances at every visit I didn't really understand how I could have a balance. Then I looked back through the explanation of benefits and everything fell in to place. It seems that the insurance didn't think I needed the deep cleanings and only partially covered them. Imagine that. I wonder why I didn't know about. Oh, I see, the visits weren't even submitted to the insurance for charging until after my second visit. Oh right.... They pressured me into booking within one month. Well in the end I'm just glad to be out of there. Who knows how long they'd let me go without paying that balance. Ironically I ended up paying more at the in-network dentist than I would have paid anywhere else.

It keeps your mind off the poking with sharp metal objects part of the visit. Other than being a cool dude.. I have a helluva reason to love this dentist. A few months ago, I went to my old dentist with a crazy toothache that went up the whole side of my head. I mentioned it was a day after biting on some very hard bread so I thought I might of cracked it and not felt the effects until today- I had no idea? She said she did not see cracks but likley it was factures you can't see and I would need a root canal.. just like that. I was like really.. oh no! After banging on my tooth in which I howled in pain to prove it to me again she said,"Yep Root canal." She wanted me to get this done ASAP. I told her I have to call back. I wanted a second opinion. I went in to see Dr. Miyata who was excellent about fitting me in the next day for an emergency visit. He looked at and hit my tooth too, but he also took a x-ray and saw a fuzziness on his picture that looked like I had a sinus infection. I did not think I did as it was just a toothache that went up to my ear. That looks like a sinus infection, the bread thing might have just made it sensitive too. He gave me antibiotics for my toothache and said if this does not help to come back in and we will see what's happening once this infection goes down. With in days I was better. Yay! No Root Canal! He took the time to evaluate all possibilities before mangling my tooth for no reason. I am grateful. Later that month, Dr. Miyata's office sent me a card welcoming me as a new patient, shoot, I should have sent him a card for saving my tooth! I just went in again for annual cleaning/check up and I have to say I really love coming to a small practice, the staff is so nice and I like the lil bag of cleaning goodies ya get with your cleaning. Really nice service and conveniently located next to the Light Rail.

I've complained to him about various tooth issues and he says, "Well, we could do such-and-such procedure, but you're probably better off just waiting a while to see if the symptom subsides." And he's always correct -- the random ache goes away and I didn't have to pay a cent nor endure a drill. I've had dentists who were like car salesman -- they'd use their medical knowledge to intimidate me into accepting an unnecessary procedure. Many dentists seem really greedy. Dr. Miyata is not like that. He often talks with the assistant about super random stuff while he's working on my teeth, which I find both odd and entertaining.
