Be aware: Your estimate may be nowhere near your final cost. We purchased a house that had a shop with squirrel burrows under it. I called TerraFirma and a couple other companies to get quotes. RJ arrived and I explained the issue. He took about 45 minutes to inspect and gave me an estimate for under $4,000. I was happy with that, signed the agreement, and cancelled the other companies' visits. A date was scheduled for a month later (just before Christmas). The technician Jeremy arrived on time and prepared. He was easy to get along with. A few hours after he informed me that he finished about 1/3 of the shop and that was all the foam in the estimate. He told me that he could stop or continue, but there is an extra cost. I felt like I really had no other option but continue. Jeremy seemed to empathize with the situation I was in and did what he could to keep the cost down. After all was set and done, my $4,000 estimate had turned into almost $10,000. I was unable to get in touch with RJ to talk about it at the time. He left a voicemail stating he was on vacation, but would elevate it with the team. After the new year I left voicemails with Victoria, the project manager, several times over a week and a half with no return call, even though being told she was in the office. I finally explained my issue with the person who answered the company's main line and that I had left several messages with no response. She advised that she would send an urgent note to Victoria and her boss. The next day I received an email from Victoria simply stating the technician had already given me a break and that I signed the authorization for additional work. I understand overages and that estimates are just a best guess, but my final cost was way over twice the original estimate, my calls were ignored, and the company does not seem to be concerned that my project was $6,000 over the estimate. Needless to say, I will not be doing business with them again. read more

Living in a 30-year-old home for the past two decades we've had several phases of upgrades, but one thing has always been absent from a 10x10 slab on our back porch: a hot tub. So, this summer, we decided to move forward with the plan to be "soakin' for the holidays" three months away. The only thing standing in the way of that dream: the slab and its neighbor had sunk a few extra degrees, roughly three inches, at the far edge. We were going to need to shore up and permanently stabilize this slab if our hopes of the (3-ton when filled) tub were going to materialize. I made a quick call to Terra Firma and they had an estimator out within a few days. The pricing was reasonable and had the standard 50% up front 50% when complete-type contract. Casey arrived spot-on at 8:00am yesterday morning and began doing his magic (the process involves boring 1/2" holes through the slab, then using high pressure and heat to inject a molten expanding foam under the slab.) The foam is rated to support about 5 tons (10,000 pounds) per pound of foam material, and....100 pounds later that whole slab is back to following the prescribed slope perfectly, raising almost three inches on the sunken side. He did a great job and was a great rep for the company, explaining what little was left to explain. He kept me up on the status of the (4-hour) job as he went along--because our slabs had previously cracked, he had to gently lift it up in small sections so as to not have the sections separate further. Perfect job. 24 hours later and the patched holes have dried to almost-invisible (see photos). Unless you know what you're looking for, you can't even really see that repairs were made. Now I just need to fill in the pre-existing cracks with concrete patching caulk and we're ready to schedule the hot tub delivery! Yippee! Thanks Terra Firma! read more

We spent $25,000 to have under our house encapsulated. The mice keep getting in, they came out one time and found a spot that wasn't sealed and said they fixed it. The mice are still getting in. And now they want to charge us $135 plus tax to fix the problem again. We are still paying on the $25,000 loan. Update Thanks for the information Evan. I wasn't told that when I called about the problem. Since they found a hole that did not get sealed the first time and fixed it, I'm wondering if it could be that again or if the mice chewed through. Our house is built in the SW hills of Portland originally in 1938, with a 2003 addition. TerraFirma waterproofing product has been a significant update to a shoddy home remodel that the January ice storm exposed. After this unexpected remodel and damage was exposed we had a delay of several months to get on their schedule. When the project date arrived, they showed up on time, cleaned well after the demolition/addition of interior floors to allow drainage and a sump-pump. My original review (4 star due to not adjusting the cost when less product was used) they owned the mistake and recognized their communication gaps. We didn't end up needing their service, be we were blown away by the quote process. When I was buying my home our pre-purchase inspection noted a few issues with the foundation and recommended calling a foundation contractor, which we put off for years. We finally had TerraFirma come out to check it. The inspector was extremely thorough and knowledgeable. He spent 3 hours checking the foundation from the inside and out and measuring the settlement of the house and reviewing old permits. In the end, after so much detailed work he explained everything he found and let us know that our foundation was just fine. He confirmed what the prior inspector has seen but told us those were evidence of an old repair that was still good. He didn't try to sell us anything we didn't need and told us the small issues we had were suitable for DIY or a handyman and even offered to find a referral for a handyman for us. read more

I live part time in another state. They tried to communicate with me there. That was alright. But for payment, instead of waiting for me to return to Portland they threatened me with a lien, Which I really don't appreciate since it was about an $11.000 investment. You know, just trying to be a good landlord for ! small house. I gave precise instructions about removing some mold. It didn't happen. I also don't understand exactly what they did. It looks alright but I think I deserve a walk through. I have not gotten any response from the original project manager. November 2021 update: The sump pump came on for the first time recently. I just happened to hear water splashing on the floor in the basement. I found that they had forgotten to glue one of the joints in the pipe that takes water from the sump pump to the outside. So the pump was pumping water onto the basement floor. If I had not caught it the basement would have been flooded. When I called TerraFirma for help the recording said they were not answering phones. Nice. Fortunately I was able to fix it myself. My impression is that this company has expanded a lot in recent years and does not have enough skilled and knowledgeable staff to provide good customer service. read more

Laughably bad. Hope this review sames someone the headache. Their errors cost me so much time and energy, I really regret using them over the other quote I got. Extremely surprising for a company that specializes in this. Don't let their outward polish and detailed estimates fool you. 1. The design of the system failed to include a critical component, which ended up costing me more money to refinish. 2. The crew that came out to do the work only told me about the design error after my basement was torn up. 3. Most of the initial crew left hastily without cleaning, and took all the equipment to do so. 4. Even when they officially 'finished,' the drainage pipe they installed in my yard was STILL EXPOSED with clumps of lawn haphazardly thrown on top. Had to have even more appointments to just get it done. It would all be comical if it didn't cost me so much time and money. read more

UPDATED: In response to the comment from Terra Firma, no altimeter was used and there was no measurement of settlement done. I know this because the next company that came DID actually measure the settlement. All our Terra Firma evaluator did was take pictures. At the 3.5 hour mark, after the estimate of over $100,000, the evaluator offered to bring in his equipment and measure for settlement. We told him no thank you since the bid made nonsense given that he hadn't actually done that. . ORIGINAL POST: We had some leaking in our garage after the crazy rainstorm in January and wanted to make sure we didn't have a bigger problem. Terra Firma came out and after a THREE AND A HALF HOUR estimate session, the salesman pulled out a fancy power point and told us we needed to install 25 steel piers to stabilize our foundation to the tune over over $100,000. I will note that during his 2 hours in our crawlspace he took about 50 photos but apparently could not locate our low point drain which every other contractor found. We had 3 other foundation companies come out for 2nd opinions, all of whom said our foundation was fine. The other companies actually used their time at our house to measure any foundation settlement by using equipment to assess how even our floors were. All three also agreed on the size of foundation crack that merits concern, compared with Terra Firma which tried to convince us that very small cracks were huge problems. Subsequent research confirmed for us that the three other companies were using industry standard measurements and Terra Firma was not. Check out the other reviews. Louis, RJ, Roberto, Tim, Carlos, Miguel, Antonio, and Sebastian have been putting in sub pumps for the past 2 days and have been extremely accommodating given we have a 3 year old and 1 year old. They work fast and their work is extremely well done. They know what they're doing and overall just very pleasant to work with. We had initially used a different foundation company for a quote and when they came out, their assessments and pricing was sloppy. We didn't get any real answers so we called TerraFirma for a quote. RJ came out, did an incredible job taking measurements, assessing crawl spaces, and giving a really thorough explanation of what was going on and what we needed to do. 10/10 would recommend to anyone with kids given they're all very understanding and accommodating. OK. I'm a contractor of 25 years. Terra Firma's system of basement water mitigation is a sham. Don't take my word for it. Do your homework. don't be fooled by the slick presentation and the computer generated video. Their above ground water collection concept just doesn't make sense. They installed that system for my client and, after $40,000, it completely failed. Client had to spend $25,000 for a legit outfit to stop the water. (And yes, the water stopped with the new sensible underground drain system). I could go on. They have some shady fast track thing with the city for permitting. You don't want that--you WANT oversight--it's your house! These guys do a ton of work in this region and they are hurting a lot people financially. Do your homework. read more

Avoid this company if you can. When I first researched foundation repair I thought they were the best in the area but I think I was wrong. They had to come out and redo a repair and we didn't have the best experience the first time they came out either. The initial install- was two jacks and 5 carbon fiber strips. We moved all items away from the workspace and somehow they still managed to fling a concrete dust over everything. When they left we had a thick coat of concrete dust on all of our stuff to clean off. This was not very professional and a little annoying. The repair- I got a call at 12:54 that some of the work they did was with expired epoxy so they were wanting to come back out and redo it that afternoon. Yea, they gave me 1hr heads up that they were coming to repair some stuff. It's good that they let us know and we're proactive about fixing it, that's why I gave them more than 1 Star. However I had not planned on hearing the loud noises outside my place today. They are literally cutting out the strips they put in and stripping them off. It's even more annoying and a little inconvenient. The strips also don't cut out easily so they're grinding it down slowly and dust is getting inside. Service- it also seemed in conversations that the foreman didn't know what work they were doing. It seems like the workers knew though so we were ok with that. Price- they are expensive but I thought at the time, the price was worth it because you don't want to skimp on foundation repair. My opinion now is that these guys are not worth the fancy pricing, they have all the newest gear but not the most qualified ppl. I should have just hired someone else. Sales- sales is pushy to make a decision quickly but I understand they're just trying to do their job. I like time to think about $10k+ projects so I really had to hold my ground on giving me time, which he was eventually understanding of. Overall they're not terrible but I hope they're not the best in Portland because it was just terrible. Edit: the final product is an eye sore, it looked ok but paintable the first time but now it looks just plain terrible, avoid this company at all costs. read more

I would not let Terra Firma near my house. They wanted to put in 17 helical piers on our foundation which was absurd. We got three other contractors in to look at the same problem. Terra Firma bid was 20 X higher than all three competitors. If you have a foundation issue get other foundation companies to come in and give bids. read more

Update: The professionals at Terra Firma had a choice of using a 4x6 or a 4x4 for a very expensive horizontal support beam. In their professional opinion they decided to use a bowed (not straight) 4x4 as a support beam. They cut up the 4x6 to use as replacements for fixing 2x4 15" bracing supports. The incompetence never seems to end. Terra Firma (who has a professional company monitoring these reviews) - or Yelp is somehow trying to hide this and my other review. read more

I reference their work on the Winchester Dam in Roseburg, Oregon and the massive fines levied by the Oregon Department of Fish and Game. I had a genuinely horrible experience, in the end, with TerraFirma (TF). At first, they were helpful and responsive. I was considering purchasing a home, and they came out and gave me a quick bid. When I learned there were foundation issues, I ultimately opted to purchase the home based on the estimates TF provided to install multiple helical piers. I then hired them for the work, and they were able to get me on their schedule quickly. They arrived on time, and were pleasant to engage with. I gave them about $31,000 for this work. When the seasons started to change, my front door started sticking and it became very difficult to open. Also, I had cracks open up in several walls, doors that would no longer shut, and tile floors that separated from the bath/shower in both of the bathrooms (see pictures). I called TF and their staff communicated that they should have installed piers around either side of the front door, and that they should have also better secured the middle of the home, suggesting smart jacks at the wall/door joint. So, they fairly promptly scheduled a time to install two more piers around the front door. (They did not inform me ahead of time that I would need to remove the hot water heater in my garage for this job, and I was in a bind to do it myself the day before their visit.) They then suggested running a beam across the length of my house, but were concerned about the potential for damaging the new flooring, cabinets and counters in the kitchen. So then, one of their managers came out and, after his re-assessment, said that he was not convinced that a beam would be appropriate, nor would water mitigation solutions and smart jacks. Instead, he wanted to monitor the house for a full year to track foundation changes from the weight to dry reason. While the perimeter of the house hadn't moved, the center of the home had - to the extent that many posts and pads were no longer touching during the dry season. After a year of monitoring, which included me tracking this manager down for several appointments, he said he would have a solution for me and call me within two weeks. After 4 weeks, I called TF, and they told me that this manager retired, did not have notes for most of his visits, and that they would not be paying for a solution for the center of my house. I now believe that they did this for the purposes of pushing me outside the window of time required for CCB complaints - lesson learned. You have one year after the work is completed to submit a formal complaint. Since that time, we've since had several email conversations that were, in my opinion, extremely unprofessional and unkind. In one email response, the owner, Ryan Beckley, described feeling frustrated for dealing with customers like me, with "amnesia", and blamed the center of the house on me, for cutting corners. In addition to the lack of professionalism, their work was expensive and incomplete. I am out $31,000, and the center of my house is a mess. I also recently started digging up my downspouts to try and fix some of the lingering issues myself and some of the drainage they broke and repaired during pier installation is already falling apart (see picture). The 1.5 years I spent dealing with this company was extremely stressful. I feel taken advantage of and I would never recommend TF to anyone I care about. read more

We've had the best experiences with Terra Firma. A few years ago our basement was flooding out of control. Terra firma fixed it and we have not had a problem since. Our recent job included running a long drain along the entire backside of our house, tying into our downspout, then into the side yard (lots of trees) and finally running down into the street. The gentlemen that did the work were so conscientious every step of the way - from keeping our pets safe by closing the gates behind them, to only digging up the roots that were absolutely necessary in order to try to save the trees. They made sure I understood every step of the process, from beginning to the final cleanup and walkthrough. They were also able to tie into an existing line that we didn't even know was there. If they hadn't had such integrity, we would never have known and would have paid for new lines. Instead, they pointed out the buried line and ultimately saved us a lot of money. Regarding Crawl Space Encapsulation. If you are considering using TerraFirma for your next project please read and understand what is outlined below. I know it is long but potential clients need to understand that the type of company they portray themselves as is not what they ultimately value. They have a good sales team but their guarantees and promises are all smoke and mirrors. If you get mesmerized by their sales team and slick appearance and do not heed my words than please make sure that they get the required permits for your jurisdiction. They do not like to get permits and I think the reason they have such good reviews is because not everybody will actually go into their crawl space to inspect the work or do not now what they are looking at. Inspections exist to make sure they do the job right. Here are the excuses they gave me as to why inspections were not going to be done. #1 Not needed for my job type (Lie) #2 Project manager was new and forgot or neglected to apply for permit #3 Thought my property was not within the zone where inspection was required (BS) #4 The Sales person forgot to click a button when putting together proposal. Always call your city building department. They will tell you if one is needed. Once the job was completed I understood why they do not like to get permits for the jobs they perform. Simply put they do not adhere to building code. I'm not sure they understand the meaning of encapsulation. They took out all the old insulation and neglected to fully re-insulate the crawlspace. I told them there is no way this was code compliant. They insisted that it was. After battling with them for some time they did eventually apply for a permit and as it turns out this was not to code. Shocker!!My floors were very cold and it took considerably more energy to heat my house. they were actually going to leave my crawl space improperly/incompletely insulated. I feel sorry for anyone out there who lives with this and does not know that the job is incomplete because it was never inspected. Here are the excuses for the insulation. #1 Fiberglass batting is not good for the remainder of the insulation because it can attract rodents. #2 Rigid foam insulation is not good because it can trap moisture and cause problems #3 Spray foam is not good because it can cause dry rot if not done properly. I said to them well do it properly. They told me they do not offer it. They had the audacity to actually tell me that I did not purchase the option for the added insulation. I did not know this company offers a not to code option. One of their managers actually told me that he did not build my house so I guess It's not their responsibility to properly insulate my house. Thats why they have someone come out and look at the project and place a bid based on what they see using building codes for guidance. What a joke. They actually tried to tell me that they were on an honor system with the city of Beaverton and they they just approve jobs without the need of inspect. I called Beaverton and that was a blatant lie. They, after threatening to get their work inspected on my own, got the required permits. They of course backtracked and said they always intended to apply for a permit. However, when I asked them if they intended to apply for a permit, and they were going to leave the crawlspace uninsulated, how then did they expect to pass inspection. They had no answer for me. The truth is uncomfortable but they were never going to apply for a permit until I started asking questions. By the way if you look them up on the CCB website they've been fined in the past for neglecting to apply for permits. It took them three tries to pass final inspection. Mainly not passing for neglecting to properly insulate. I truly believe that either they are purposefully negligent and deceitful or incompetent or both. SAD! They portray themselves as the best and charge a premium, but in fact this was by far the worst experience I've had. There is more to the story but space is limited.
