When Cliff showed up to assess our leaky finished basement (which took on water during heavy rains, likely at the cold seam between the foundation (1927) and the rat slab (1980's?)), I was a little skeptical. Other contractors visited in decaled trucks, carrying professional letterhead and selling a "comprehensive" (and expensive) system of trenches cut into the slab, plastic sheeting behind the drywall (and a lot of drywall repair) and a sump pump. Cliff arrived wearing camouflage cargo shorts and a tank top, with an entirely different idea: a drain tile. Due to some mixed reviews on Yelp, I asked to speak with three references, all of whom showered "A" Waterproofing with praise (to a surprising extent). I also read up on drain tiles on Green Building Advisor -- they checked out. So, I awarded "A" Waterproofing the job, and I still feel lucky that I did. In less than a week, "A" Waterproofing had installed and patched over the drain tile. They wrapped the system in geotextile (recommended on Green Building Advisor) despite their patient debate to the contrary. I appreciated the flexibility. Likewise, they were gracious with my requests to add clear-out caps, and to use 45º joints instead of 90º joints so as to improve flow to the drain. The changes may not improve performance, but it gave me some ease. We had 2.5" of rain within 30 hours later that fall, an amount that certainly would have flooded our basement. Imagine our relief and delight when we couldn't find any moisture at the usual spots! Finally, we could rest easy when big rain loomed on the forecast. Our sole point of friction came when "A" Waterproofing cut a decommissioned pipe that lay in the path of their drain tile. Something seeped out and stained our new concrete. "A" Waterproofing took responsibility and paid for the clean up without argument. That demonstrates commendable integrity. I heartily recommend "A" Waterproofing if your basement seeps during heavy rains. Their work cost thousands less than competing systems, which now seem absurd overkill by comparison and would have involved a ton of drywall repair. PS - Before "A" Waterproofing wrapped up, we also had them install 30' of fence along and on top of a concrete retaining wall, and install about 50' of french drain along our foundation. The Waterproofing and Drainage Co is the best group we have ever found for solving drainage problems. They are fast, efficient, reliable, and nice. They give a life-time guarantee on their work, regardless of who owns the house. And they are the hardest working crew I've ever seen -- a 5-star experience for us. We had a serious problem with a failing sump pump and lots water under our house. Then we also discovered five inches of water under a new room we added four years earlier. A plumber came out and did not seem to know what to do. He put my anvil in the sump pump bucket, which did stop it from floating up and making the pump run continuously. He suggested a second sump pump under the new room which is separated from old section by foundation wall. I told him i did not want my anvil there permanently, but he would not be available to come out again for a long time and was very expensive. So i decided to try a drainage company instead. Luckily i found A Waterproofing and Drainage. Cliff came right out and suggested removing the faulty sump pump and putting in drainage ditches with perf pipe and pea gravel under the old and new sections, connected by going under the foundation wall that separated them-- then piping the water under the front foundation out to a bank. They started immediately and completed the entire job in four days. They also fixed several unrelated things under the house for no charge. For example they installed two vent wells on the outside of the nee room that the contractor had forgotten and replaced the worn out vapor barrier under the older part of the house. The price was reasonable , if not a little low considering how difficult the work wall the extra stuff they did. If you ever have drainage problems i can recommend this group enthusiastically. **Update after one of the wettest winters on record ZERO problems. After the heaviest days of rain we checked under the house. Vapor barrier completely dry for the first time since we moved here. Under the barrier no standing water! read more

I feel like my experience was possibly an anomaly. I am updating my previous review because the owner did come out and make a problem right (without calling though so we weren't home and my roommate had to be late to work to allow them in). However, it was kind of a whirlwind experience where I was promised a quick deadline and it was pushed back for quite awhile. It took many months to get back to where I wanted it to be. Because I was desperate to get my tenant back into his space, I accepted the work as it was. To be fair, the business probably would have come back in and jack-hammered back up the floor (I had a nice, smooth, finished cement floor prior to the project and ended up with a gravel-y and uneven floor in its place in many spots), but after multiple weeks of being out of part of my house, I wasn't willing to. Yes, the basement doesn't leak, but there are things about my basement that I am not happy with that you can see in the pictures I've provided. If I didn't have a tenant or didn't work like crazy, I probably would have let them back in to fix up the place, but I just got tired. The owner is communicative and helped as much as he could. My one patio looks nice but they told me they knew how to run a pipe for natural gas to be installed... come to find out that they did not so now I have a unusable pipe sticking out of the middle of my patio!! I was very disappointed in this and the cleanup. My grass is destroyed in areas and concrete all over. My new front walkway looks OK from afar but the concrete color is splotchey and not the quality I would have liked. I also got charged 1,000-1,500 more than my quote that I agreed on. read more

No call no show for a bid that was scheduled a week ago. Any business that can't even bother to call or show up during a 2 hr window gets an "F" by me. I even gave him an extra hour and a half making it a 3.5 hour window for him to show up. Nothing frustrates me more than to schedule my day around an appointment only to be blown off. We needed a French drain install and Cliff came out to provide an estimate. During his assessment, he provided me with all of the info needed to do it myself if I wanted to save money. He even threw me a picture of how the pipe connections should look. I was shocked that a contractor would offer his secrets. It's very difficult to find an honest contractor that is so willing to help you at their own expense. Because of his extensive knowledge and honesty, I hired him to do the work. Upon completion, I wasn't happy with the way one of the pipe connection so he came back out the next day to fix it to my satisfactory. After numerous calls to various drainage companies, I finally stumbled upon Cliff. I needed a new gutter drainage system installed in the front of my house that sits on a flat lot with no city drainage pipes. It was, theoretically, a small and easy project but a bit more than I was able to undertake and problem-solve myself. Cliff came out within hours of making my initial call and was quick to come up with a solution. Within a few days the new trench was dug, pipes laid, and project completed. They even patched my grass with some sod when they were finished. Cliff showed me pictures of the project afterwards as I was not always home when they were working. The next day I woke up to a text message from Cliff that said he had left something for me on the front porch. As it turns out, it was a unique pipe fitting I had had trouble finding for the backyard drainage I was doing myself -- something we had discussed on his initial visit. Who does that?! I got a number of bids to take care of oozing walls in my basement, and to put in an egress window for my basement remodel. I was convinced by Cliff's recommendation that putting in a custom internal drainage system with a vapor barrier to drain any leakage into the sewer lines was by far the best approach. This system keeps any moisture from getting through into basement living space either through the walls or through the floor, or especially through the joint between the walls and the floor. It was done under the concrete floor--there is no sign of the work and the walls and floor are now ready for framing, insulating and finishing. And it was very reasonably priced! Cliff was great - I needed a drywell dug for a downspout. It was a bit of trouble to have him come by for the initial estimate, hence the one star deduction. But once he started the work, he did an excellent job. He even bothered to repair a broken gate I had & my broken mailbox flag without even my asking. I contacted three different companies about the basement leak at my parents' house, and I got three different answers and attitudes. The first one was pushing a sump pump, and when I told them that is not the direction we wanted to go their rep got aggressive and condescending. No thank you! The second offered an exterior french drain solution at an exorbitant cost (although they are rated very well on Yelp for service). Then a friend told me about "A" Waterproofing and Drainage. Cliff came and surveyed our problem, offered both an interior/exterior trenching solution at HALF the price of the other quote. He was prompt, courteous and extremely knowledgeable and easy to work with. I am very happy with the work that was done, which also included some gutter downspout corrections and covering an existing pvc pipe my dad had placed in the front yard under the picture window. I wish i could give Cliff and his team 6 stars. i live in Irvington and we have a super high water table. I had water intrusion in my fully finished and carpeted basement the day of the historic water in 24 hr period (12/7/15). My contractor pulled up the wet rug/rug pad so I was able to take my time getting estimates. We spent over a month getting EIGHT estimates. Everyone was giving us the run around. One guy even upped his initial 12k estimate to 22k overnight! One reason we went with Cliff is that his company does both interior and exterior waterproofing. Obviously if a company only does interior they're gonna give you the hard sell on why interior waterproofing is the ONLY way to go, vice versa for exterior. Anyway, exterior is way more expensive and time-consuming, and cliff said I didn't need to do it since it's a water table issue. He also said I didn't have to worry about my finished basement - no joke they were able to jackhammer up and install the drain without messing up my newly painted walls or the baseboard etc. They work really really hard and Cliff is super polite and he and his team were great about cleaning everything up. Not to mention how competitive his bid was. Can't say enough positive stuff about A Waterproofing and Drainage! :) Nota bene: It hasnt rained much since they finished a few days ago, but I'm pretty confident that from now on my basement will stay dry, and the warranty will be there in case it doesn't. read more
