Tensuke has improved significantly from the first time I came here. I typically get the Tonkotsu broth with the pork chasu being a fairly typical ramen order for my first few times to get the sense of a ramen place. The noodles were wavy with a reasonable chew, although not the best I've had. The broth is actually quite good as well with a deep flavor and not too fatty. They actually have quite a number of add-ins standard including a golden egg, fish cake, scallions, seaweed, bean sprouts, and what I think to be fried garlic for seasoning. The only thing I wish they did was heat their chasu as the chasu I feel was just room temperature when they added it to the warm broth. The ambiance of this place is also reasonably nice as well with a few rooms and seating arrangements. As the service is similar to a fast casual with ordering and pick up at a counter, service isn't a key component of this review, but the people taking orders are quite friendly and they have a number of people wiping down tables and to ensure the dining room stays nice. Bottom line, Tensuke has a fairly solid bowl of ramen, especially in central Ohio in an approachable space. While not the absolute best, it's definitely one of the better ones in the area and at a better price point. read more

I've been going to the shops at Kenny Center since I was a kid. It's exciting to see the Japanese businesses expanding. What was once a little-known secret and a resource for exchange students and Honda plant executives to feel more at home has become, in the past 20-25 years, quite a draw on the northwest side of Columbus for anyone out for fresh foods and innovative products. Last weekend was my first time at Tensuke Express and my first fresh ramen experience. I'm sorry to say I was disappointed. Mainly because the noodles smelled like ammonia. It's not very appetizing when your meal smells like toilet bowl cleaner. I tried to make myself eat it, but I couldn't finish. I ordered right before they closed after lunch, so I wonder if, in the rush to close, the noodles hadn't been rinsed off, or had been sitting in the same water all day. You can pick toppings too so it's pretty versatile. I wish I could have all the toppings though. The mini bowls come a dollar off if you get it with the noodles. I've been here multiple times and each time I was highly satisfied with the food and service. I usually try to avoid the rush hour during lunch and dinner because it gets pretty crowded and waiting for a table can take awhile. If you have to wait, you need to place your name and phone number down with a server and they will call you when there is a table available for you. For the majority of the time, you order up front, grab the buzzer and sit at any available table. This is great comfort food because it is very difficult to find a place that serves decent Japanese food in Ohio. Tensuke Express has an assortment of ramen, combo meals (either soba or udon), curry, and side dishes. I have tried the ramen and did not enjoy it. I have had ramen in LA alot and in Japan as well. The flavor of the broth is too watered down for me. I typically stick to ordering combo meals and curry. I have ordered combo meals that come with either hot/cold udon/soba and a rice dish. The small rice dish can be a shrimp tempura bowl or a beef bowl. These were all great! I have also ordered chicken katsu with curry and it was pretty good as well. If you are craving sushi, you can buy some from the market that is located inside and bring it to eat at Tensuke along with your meals. This place is awesome. My boyfriend and I stumbled across this place while trying to go to Akai Hana next door for Japanese food. The line at Akai Hana was long, and we ended up wandering around and ended up at Tensuke and it was a lucky find! He goes back probably once a week, and I probably go about once per month. This is some of the most reliably good, reasonably-priced Japanese food in Columbus. Everything is good, honestly. I usually get an udon soup or the yaki udon. The ramen is also full of flavor. The portion sizes are also very reasonable, especially for the prices, and I have never left hungry. The sides are also good. My boyfriend gets his sushi from the store next door and eats it in their restaurant. The sitting area can get crowded, especially at peak times (weekend lunch and dinner), but they have done a much better job at getting tables for customers while waiting in line. They are usually quick with their service no matter the time though. read more

I'm from Cleveland. Every time I come to Columbus, stopping by Tensuke is a must before I leave the city. This place has fantastic ramen and beer curry. My go to ramen is the tonkatsu ramen with chasiu pork. If I am not feeling ramen, I usually settle with the beer curry with the pork cutlet. You can't go wrong with either of these options. Recently, I went down and saw a sign that says they changed the way they make their broths. That day, I got the beef curry instead so I haven't tried the new broth yet. But I'm definitely going down sometime soon to try it out. My friend ordered it and said it was delicious.. that was after having it already yesterday. The chicken katsu is also really delicious and flavorful. Super tender as well The restaurant has a good amount of seating so you can always find an open space where though I'm not sure about peak lunch and dinner times. A coworker who knows sushi clued me in to this place, and said he had eaten here three weeks in a row. I made a point to detour over this way; it's not in my neck of the woods, and is really not near much of anything, tucked behind that small commercial cluster at Kenny and OId Henderson. I am so glad I went. You can get sushi and other odds and ends at the attached market, then come eat here. I was able to pay for everything at once at the cafe, which is handy. I picked up some sushi, then walked over for a noodle bowl. The sushi is cheaper and better than grocery store sushi, and very good though not stellar. Went with the curry ramen, which was amazing. I haven't partaken much of the latest ramen and soba trend, but I've had a few good ones and this topped them. Of course, it has little in common with your college ramen. The noodles were tender and flavorful, the broth (I chose pork flavoring, which went well with the curry) is thick and tasty, the curry/beef/egg/veggie toppings were great, and the whole thing was served piping hot. Between the sushi and the soup I was stuffed, for a fairly low price. This is my favorite kind of place: no fancy decor, all about the food. It's not crummy looking, in fact it's nice, but it's minimalist and functional. Plenty of tables and a bar-type seating area, though not like a sushi bar. Order and pick up at the counter, where you can get canned pop. Bus yourself. Sit and savor your meal, along with what appear to be students, older locals, and hipsters. Simple. Clean. Delicious. Tensuke does a great job providing delicious Japanese comfort foods without majorly denting the wallet. Connected to the most popular Japanese market in the state, one would assume that the restaurant connected to it would be equally as satisfying. I had their Combo meal which includes either udon or soba, along with a choice of rice bowl (from gyudon (shredded meat), tempura-don, etc.) for a mere $8. Unfortunately they do not substitute the soba for zaru soba (served cold and dipped), but that's alright, because what I ended up enjoying was better than I thought! The noodles were great- not too chewy nor hard. The small pieces of tempura was also a welcome side to the already delicious soba. A set definitely is enough to satisfy you before you venture off next door to get desserts. While I haven't tried out a lot of Asian restaurants in Columbus due to my skepticism, this small joint definitely deserves props for probably being one of the best spots in this state for Japanese. Be patient though- line can get long. But it's all worth it. Parking is available inside the private lot. If it's full, go next door to the Staples lot. read more

A few friends and I arranged to meet at Tensuke Express for brunch. The ordering process is easy to follow. As soon as you walk in there are menus for you to review then when you say your order you are given a buzzer that lets you know when it is ready to be picked up at the counter. I was very excited to try this place because I didn't know there was a restaurant nearby in Columbus that served golden chicken curry! Everyone else in my group ordered enormous bowls of ramen that they could hardly finish. I, of course, had to order the Chicken Cutlet Curry Rice and I was not disappointed! The portions are quite generous so make sure you arrive with a big appetite! However, if you are not able to finish your meal, they have a nice system where they provide you with plastic containers to take your leftovers with you. It can be a bit noisy in here and the dining area can fill up fast, so be sure to get there early if you want a seat. I also tried my friend's ramen and thought the broth could've been more flavorful but they do not skimp out on the amount of noodles and protein. Tensuke Express is to Japanese food what Fazoli's is to Italian. Expect inexpensive, quick, food, that's largely prepared from frozen or prepackaged, though with fresh touches added. The restaurant is counter service, so no tipping and you will bus your own table. Service is quick, but lines can get very long. Options are legit Japanese, the sort you'd see in a casual cafe type place over there. No sushi. Some simplified donburi, many appetizer/snacks options (gyoza, croquettes, takoyaki, etc.), and their ramen and soba soups are very popular (I would put their ramen on par with the fancier high end of the prepackaged sort, with in-house toppings added) The food is good, especially for the price, but don't expect to be wowed by some rave-inducing culinary experience. Again, this is on par with Fazoli's. The dining space is attractive, contemporary, and welcoming, with many configurations allowing single diners, couples, and groups large or small to be accommodated easily. Excellent for someone wanting Japanese without having to endure the ritual or expense of a formal restaurant. Seems like a very popular spot with the highschool/ younger college crowd (I think it would be a very appropriate choice for a highschool date, being inexpensive, but still unique and fun) and with Asian families with children. It is within easy and safe walking distance of Belle's Breads, Ichiban Bakery, and Kung Fu Tea, if you'd like dessert afterwards, as well as some stores worth lingering in, like the Tensuke grocery store and the J Avenue gift store. So again, a nice choice for an inexpensive date, group hangout, or outing with a child. Would be an excellent place to take a kid on a special parent/child date, since the food is very approachable to any palate (just tell them the karaage are Japanese chicken nuggets, and croquettes are basically deep fried mashed potatoes, so what's not to love?), inexpensive, (so you won't mind if they don't like it,) quick and casual, (so you don't stress about their manners being strained or other diners being annoyed), and you can visit the above shops afterwards. read more

Back to Basics. Tensuke is the least fancy and most reliable of the ramen options in Columbus. This bowl had a couple of things going for it: the chashu was non-pork belly , decently roasted, and in a good portion size; the ajitama egg was well-made by American standards; the miso broth wasn't distinctive, but well-mixed, with no obvious separation between the miso and the base. Kamaboko was nice, but the spinach was overcooked, the moyashi undercooked. Big concern was with the noodles, which were incredibly gummy. Tasted like 3-pack refrigerator ramen from the supermarket, with the noodle packet having been left in there too long. Disappointing, makes you wonder if the miso broth is similarly from a packet. Not a huge deal and not surprising, but worthy of note. Tensuke's a decent ramen option when you absolutely need a fix. It has a lot of strong points, but the noodles are disappointing. read more

One of my favorite restaurant in Cbus. A must go place if you are fan of japanese food. My all time favoirites are pork cutlet and curry udon. Recommend you yo add extra hot sauce if you like spicy food. I always take sushi or sashimi from tensuke market which is right next to, and have is as side or appetizer. Their portions are not large but decent so I always have two plates lol. Their services are usually very prompt. This was just okay for me. It didn't strike me as something to "write home about," but the atmosphere was very positive and energetic. I would say though, a little more work probably needs to be done to take in people who aren't asian or regulars and familier with the menu, drinks and sides. It kinda feels like the Bubble Tea spot next door. Really, nothing actually explains what your eating or how best to combine what's being offered. I feel like an adjustment there, would make buying easier and more accessible to the inexperienced visitors. It's a nice tap and touch into the culture, I am grateful for it, and I look forward to visiting again soon. Perhaps adding 2 other locations in Columbus could be fun as well? One of the few ramen places near by and I must say they are pretty good. Good selection and they have my tonkatsu that I love. Broth could be more flavorful, but it's decent. Noodles are good, eggs are good. Nori is shredded which is actually nice because I get some with every bite. Fried chicken bites are also very good. Not over cooked and stringy. My only real issue is the pork. Its not as good as the rest of the dish. If they had pork belly they would be even better. Recommended for sure. Fast and convenient for your ramen needs. read more
