First off, the food was okay. Not great, but okay. The fish tasted like fish, the crab cake was okay, the onion rings were extremely greasy, the coleslaw didn't have much flavor. I should not have even had to say anything about the service because I Door Dashed the order, but I do. The dasher did exactly what they were supposed to do. They picked up the order, matched it to the slip, and delivered it on time. When we got the order we had items missing. They were not on the print out. No problem, we called. They tried to say we didn't order all we said and they finally went back and looked and saw that they did forget it. They said they would give us a new fish meal. We had to go get it. Now we had already paid for Door Dash and even more because prices are higher on Door Dash but I went anyway. They shorted us part of the meal and almost all the condiments we asked for. When I went in to get it they gave us the two things they forgot and not another meal and acted like they didn't do anything wrong. Quick lunch at a reliable fast food place I ordered a Scallop Sandwich, Sweet Potato Fries, and a small coleslaw. The scallops were decent size and fried lightly, not overcooked. I enjoyed the scallops with their cocktail sauce which I like. I ate half of the roll which is standard hot dog bun. The Coleslaw was good and consistent each visit. However, the serving of sweet potato fries was a disappointment. Thin strips of sweet potato were fried too long resulting in dry, dark fries. Tasted blah and not worth the calories. Decided to check this place out after seeing its menu online, first walking it the place felt cosy and the staff in the front was friendly. Didn't know what sauces I wanted so she gave me all of them. My wife and I had lunch at the Ballston location. Ordered a scallop dinner and a bowl of clam chowder. The chowder was very bland, hot, no clams or clam taste, but not awful-more of a potato cheese chowder. The dinner had good cole slaw, the rings were hot, but the scallops were rubbery, the second one I ate tasted sour. The next scallop was really sour, I spit it out, my wife had one-spit out as it tasted wrong, we and did not dare to eat any more. Hoping that I do not get sick. Told one of the women at the counter the scallops in my order were bad. She said she would tell someone-that was it. So I told her the food was going in the trash, she repeated that she was telling someone. I do not think she knew what to do with a complaint or problem. I have only been here once before years ago and I wasn't feeling well at the time so I didn't review it. We recently came back for a Friday night family dinner outing. It was a bit busy but the experienced staff kept things moving. I was surprised how much take-out business they did, either because of Lent or because of popularity. In any event, ordering was not without incident. I ordered the fish and chips, and was asked if I wanted it to be "the meal". When I asked what that was, the answer was fish, fries, and coleslaw. When I said I only cared about the fish and fries, he asked if that was what I was ordering. The root of the issue was confusion on their menu: you can actually order the fish and chips with only the fish (how that is fish and "chips" is beyond me). My wife ordered the same, and we got a burger for the little one. Food was ready quickly, and on the whole it was decent. A lot of fish pieces about the size of chicken tenders came on a plate. My cheap plastic fork struggled to pick them up without them falling apart into tiny chunks, which was frustrating. The fries were a pale golden color and very hot but not at all seasoned or crispy. Some people like fries that way, but not me. Sadly, only when I looked around at the end of the meal for the garbage to throw trash away did I see a condiment center with ketchup, salt, vinegar, cutlery, etc. A little salt would have gone a long way. My son's burger was small, like a plain hamburger from McDonalds, but it worked out. He was more interested in eating the fish, though, which surprised us. Anyway, it was an okay meal. At $40 with drinks it wasn't cheap, and I certainly can't say it was a great fish and chips meal. If we come back I will order differently and season with salt and vinegar, and perhaps bring my own fork. But it is a local instutition and the crowds that passed in and out while we ate attest to the fact that whatever they are doing*... people love it. *Note: I am from Rochester and the entire review above skirts the issue that what this places serves is not an actual "fish fry" (and, apparently sometimes not even "fish and chips"). read more

I absolutely LOVE Ted's, as does my entire family. Their fish fries are the best, as are their mini dogs with the works. My partner enjoys their Manhatten chowder, as well. My mother's favorite are the scallops. Amazing!!! Everyone knows about the fish (restaurant is named after it afterall) which is great. But don't overlook there burgers/sliders, hot dogs, chipped beef sandwich, Chicken Sandwiches. They pay attention to details....toasting the rolls for example. Cooking everything to order....hot and fresh. Always consistent, various locations. In fact the company does not need the customer to contact them - They have our contact from the order receipt, the ability to contact us through TA and Google via their accounts In April we also sent two emails two weeks apart from two different email addresses, leaving phone numbers and emails address's to contact us - To ad insult to our meager dinning experience the disingenuous owner failed to contact us back as promised! Our experience failed to live up to expectations based on all the great recommendations and overwhelmingly positive reviews. Initially they could not find our order at the take out - Confusion ended upon viewing the receipt and also provided our smile of the day after we noted the name on our receipt as being 'Gods'......... The meal came ready to eat on a paper plate, with an assortment of sauces and plastic utensils.... The deep-fried fish which we smothered in Tartar Sauce was ok but not a wow and was the best part of the meal. The onion rings were a battered soggy, disgusting inedible disappointment. I have been VERY familiar with the first two my entire life and tried the third since moving back here as an adult. But in my 3.5 years of being back in Albany, I had never had an Albany-style fish fry...until last week, that is. An Albany fish fry is quite a bit different from what is called "fish fry" elsewhere in Upstate New York and in the Midwest. Fish fry there refers to a dish like fish and chips. But here in Albany, fish fry is a long, narrow piece of fish on a steamed hot dog bun. There are a few places known for the dish, but the classic is probably Ted's Fish Fry (no relation to the similarly-named Ted's Hot Dogs in Buffalo), with a few locations in the region. I stopped into this newer (relatively speaking) Ted's a little after 11 on a Tuesday morning. While the place had only recently opened, there was a bit of a line, but it moved quickly. I got to the front, placed my order (fish fry, no sauce and small onion rings), and waited as it was cooked fresh to order. Fish fry, onion rings, and a soda ran a little over $10. More expensive than McDonald's, but you're paying for freshness. Food in hand, I found a table and prepared to indulge. A little hot sauce on the fish and I was ready to go. The fish was quite good. Very tasty and very fresh. The onion rings were among the best I have ever had, battered and fried to order. Greasy? Certainly. But you expect a bit of grease with fried food. I'm trying to figure out how I went three and a half years without visiting Ted's. How did I go that long missing this amazing and unique dish? This is not a fancy restaurant. It's fast food. But it's very good. I went on a Saturday night about 6. I was there for over an hour and there was a line the whole time. I'm not from the Albany area so Teds is very different from any fish fry I've ever seen before. I had New England clam chowder. It was very good. Then I had a fish platter with fries and onion rings. It was nice sized pieces of fish and there was very little breading. I hate it when you get all crust and no fish. That was not the case here. The fish came with either chili sauce or tarter sauce. I knew I liked tarter sauce but I was surprised that the chili sauce was good too. But my favorite part was the onion rings. I love onions in all forms but French fried are the best. I agree that the cole slaw portion should be larger, and it would be nice if Ted's offered an upscaled roll (for an additional charge), but after that, I wouldn't change a thing. When I asked Albany-ans (Albanians?) where to go for local eats, Ted's Fish Fry would inevitably come up, so when I found myself driving by this location, I made a quick pitstop and got the lunch special: a fish sandwich with chili sauce, fries, coleslaw, and a drink, all for about $10. The fish was outrageously misshaped and stuck out of the bun, doused with chili sauce - there's no way to eat this cleanly while driving! But the fish was perfectly cooked, tender and flaky. The crazy shape of the filet means it's real fish, not a compressed patty of fish product! The breading was a bit powdery, makes me think they dip it in crumbs *after* it's fried. And the chili sauce is more of a relish than anything truly spicy. But it all works - a tasty fish sandwich that hit the spot. And required many napkins! The fries were fresh and filling, while the coleslaw had become a little warm after sitting in the bag with the fish & fries during my ride back to the hotel -- but still crisp and fresh, with a hint of black pepper. I appreciated the amount of clam strips they provided, and they were good. Not screaming out of this world great, but good clam strips. It was the clam chowders that disappointed me. Both were ok, but nothing to write home about. While there were clam bits in both, neither had a distinctive clammy taste. I though the New England was really a potato soup with some meaty bits and the Manhattan was a pretty spicy (in a good way) tomato soup with some meaty bits. I am sure I will try Ted's out again though. I do have to try the fish, and while three stars may seem like a bit of a jab, this place is far above any fast food restaurant, so for a good plate of seafood at a pretty reasonable price, go to Ted's! read more

What a great deal for a lunch special! I was staying near the Albany Airport and found this fish fry spot within walking distance from my hotel. Now it's not the most amazing fish fry I've ever had, but for $10 you won't receive any complaints from me! The generous portion size was much appreciated, with the fish to batter ratio being well balanced. The batter could have been better seasoned and the fries were pretty average, but overall the quantity of food for the price was well worth it. Every time we have had to go back and pick up the forgotten orders, while our other food sits home and gets cold ! Never once offered anything to us besides the food that we ordered. Barely an apology. Was up for the weekend and stumbled into here with my mom and daughter. It was right by our hotel so that was nice. The food was surprisingly good. Mom got a fish sandwich meal with fries. It was huge! The best part we took part and gave it to my toddler telling her it was chicken and she gobbled it right up. No fishy taste to tell her we were lying.
