Family meal
Tony D.

Today I went to the Tea Pot Chinese Restaurant for the first time. The decor needs a little attention. We sat down and were greater with kindness. We ordered the family meal and to my surprise the portions were a good size. The taste of all the food was excellent and the service was great. When thinking about true Chinese taste please try the Tea Pot

Main seating area separated from the front by a low wall and plants.

We tried this place since it was close and there was a coupon for two free egg rolls with a $25 purchase. Getting there is pretty easy, although depending on which way you are coming you might need to wait a bit to turn left into the parking lot. Not a knock on Tea Pot, just something to be aware of depending on when you decide to go there. They are on the end of a strip mall, so parking is pretty easy. We found a place within two spaces of the entrance. We were greeted as soon as we came in. The hostess gave us menus and waited for us to decide what we wanted. She took our order and said it would be about 15 minutes. We sat in the very small waiting area just inside the door. Several other take out orders went out while we were waiting, but no one came in to eat. We got our food in just over 10 minutes. The first thing I noticed was how heavy the paper to go bag was. We ordered four entrees with soup and the bag weighed about 10 pounds. You definitely get a lot of food. On opening the bag at home, we noticed a pile of condiment packages. Soy, Duck, and hot mustard. I mean a pile. We had enough for about twice as many meals. The soups came in plastic containers filled to the brim. Each had enough for at least two servings, maybe three. Be careful opening them since you probably cannot avoid spilling some. The wonton soup had thin stock with three wontons. Overall flavor was mild, but in line with what I would expect from this soup. The wontons were not remarkable, but were fine. The egg drop soup had good egg flavor and seemed to have an overall decent amount of flavor. The broth was thickened with corn starch, too much for my taste. It also was not dispersed completely. There were gelatinous globs throughout which were unappealing. The hot and sour soup was a major disappointment. On opening the container, a scum was visible on one side. It looked like the soup had skinned over in the cooking pot and not all the skin was removed before ladling out this portion. It was also very thick, even thicker than the egg drop. It too had the gelatinous globs meaning the corn starch was not dispersed uniformly throughout. On top of that, it was burnt. I think the corn starch scorched on the bottom and got scraped off while stirring. The soup was not edible. The Sesame Chicken had good flavor but too much breading on the chicken. There was a decent amount of chicken in the dish, but the breading made it very filling. The Shredded Beef with Garlic was decent, but did not have much flavor besides the garlic. The meat was decent quality. It was not spicy hot as indicted on the menu. The General Tso's Chicken probably used the same breaded chicken as the sesame chicken with a different sauce. The breading overpowered the chicken, although the sauce was fine. Again, not spicy hot as indicated, but fine. The vegetable fried rice was not fried. It looked like yellow steamed rice. There was a normal amount of peas and onions included. The vegetable egg rolls accompanying each meal were decent. The vegetables inside were crispy but the wrapper was a bit tough. I wouldn't call it soggy, but it took effort to bite through. I assumed the free egg rolls would also be vegetable, but these had shrimp inside. They were similar to the vegetable egg rolls in terms of texture, although I think they had slightly less flavor than the vegetable ones. The main issue with this is nothing was said about the shrimp filling, and it was not indicated on line or on their flyer. This would be a major issue for those with shellfish allergies. We had a good amount of food left over due to getting such a large amount, the breading being filling, and just not liking the overall taste very much. We did not it keep it for later.

I only decided to give them a try when a 10% off coupon showed up in my mailbox. I've gotten delivery and take out from here once. For delivery, they require that you order a certain amount or hit a certain price before they are willing to deliver and then there is a delivery fee. My one experience with their delivery was fine, they quoted me 45 minutes and they came about that time. The delivery girl was pleasant and nice and our order was correct. I ordered the 6 piece half wings and my room mate ordered the General Tso's Chicken Combo which both came with fried rice. The wings were small and dry so I had to eat them with duck sauce. My room mate ate all his General Tso so I guess it was good, but he would eat anything. The fried rice was average. Overall, now that I'm out of coupons I'll probably go to Main Moon or Eggroll Chen for my Chinese food fix since they are superior in food quality.

Dead fly in my dumplings or wontons, not sure which dish it came from. Called and sent pictures to the owner who never contacted me back, had to throw all my food away since there was no way I was eating any more of that. Restaurant promised me a refund for my order but I never received the refund, even after calling again. Don't order from here!

JJ's Tea House has been a staple for years and I am so glad I finally got a chance to try them…read more Their pork based broth is so flavorful and perfectly balanced. Their noodles have a great texture to them and make their soups absolutely standout from the rest. The shrimp bao buns have great texture and flavor! The staff is friendly and the service is quick! I had my order to go but the interior is nice. You can tell it's a mom and pop shop and it truly feels like someone's grandmother is making the food back there. JJ's Tea House is one of my favorite lunch spots in Columbia! We stopped by on a Monday afternoon…read moreand it wasn't too busy. Service was quick, and the atmosphere was warm and welcoming--especially thanks to the owner, who is absolutely adorable and always greets guests with a big smile. I ordered the unagi rice bowl, and it was amazing. The eel was cooked perfectly--tender with just the right amount of char--and the sauce had a great balance of sweet and savory. The steamed egg is one of my favorite sides. We also tried the crispy tofu appetizer and the popcorn chicken rice bowl. The tofu was super crispy and flavorful, though the popcorn chicken could use a touch more seasoning. To top it all off, I had a green tea with boba, and the boba was cooked perfectly as always--soft and chewy with just the right texture. Highly recommend JJ's for a cozy lunch with delicious food and friendly service!
