Not sure if this is a straw too small problem or a boba too big problem, the boba seem normal size but every so often you have to exert major sucking action to get the boba up. More often than I care to admit to myself as a coffee-fiend, nothing beats a good cup of tea. Tea City & Cupcakes is just what I need to relax, read a book, catch up on mail, or break the monotony. The tea selections are fantastic: white, green, black, rooibos, oolong, herbal and with multiple options within each category. A small sign on the wall will give you a listing of what each category is known such as antioxidant, immune system, low caffeine, etc. When you order your tea, the employees take the brewing process seriously. It isn't just hot water poured over a tea bag, but rather a special machine that heats the water to the precise temperature needed for the particular tea and then steeps the leaves for the appropriate time. (No teabags here, only tea leaves.) Tea City also has bubble tea with all the usual varieties and you can have your tea iced, also, if that's your preference. If you stop by early enough in the day, there will be several kinds of cupcakes, also. Because I typically come in at the end of the day, the cupcake pickings are pretty slim, but that's okay. Okay I love the boba tea here so much, the girls working are great, the only thing is the inconsistency with flavor in the tea. I get the same thing every time I go but each time I go it tastes different depending on who's working. Some girls are very quick and efficient like the red headed girl and then there's the very light blonde girl who always takes super long for one drink. The shop, decor and the staff was lovely! Unfortunately the out of few main things the shop offers (loose leaf tea, build your own boba drinks, and cupcakes) the boba was not good. I'm not sure if we had a bad batch, but the boba was not cooked all the way through, so the tapioca pearls were hard instead of being gummy/chewy. And out of their milk tea list options the Taro and the Thai teas were not sweetened (as much as previous milk teas I've had) and there was no ice put in the cups, so the milk teas were oddly warm instead of chilled. I did however get to pick up a lovely tea steeper! I think this shop could really do well if staff had proper training on how to prepare boba and milk teas. This review is just on the black milk tea. The boba was delicious, but the tea was watered down and not creamy. I think that the tea was still hot so it melted the ice. You can choose your own milk type like creamer, half and half or milk. I think we might have had skim milk, and it would be improved by asking for whole. It's really gone downhill. This place used to be my favorite stop in Billings out of the way. Today I called in advance to make sure they were open when I arrive I was informed that they were out of most of their bubble tea flavors and their toppings. Kind of annoying that they don't have any boba. It would be an hour wait so I just ordered an oolong milk tea. It was horribly watered down with no flavor. I gave 4 stars for originality. Any place that has over 15 Flavors of tea and a matcha cupcake has courage in my book. I prefer coffee myself and believe it would be a good addition to have an espresso machine in the shop maybe even carrying City Brew coffee since they are neighbors. The girl working yesterday was so kind and very nice! The cupcake was very very good, but had 2x the amount of frosting to cake. Not that big of an issue can just scrape iff some frosting... the cake was really yummy. The milk tea, however, was quite expensive for what you got. It was extremely watered down. Definitely would not order any drinks from here again. Needs a stronger tea base and just enough cream to make it smooth, but this tea really had very little flavor and was overly watery. Would recommend going for the cupcakes, would recommend skipping if you're thinking about a drink. read more

This is definitely one of my favorite gems. I love all of their tea. The cupcakes I occasionally will devour. They are sweet as a cupcake is. The tea they have such a variety and also have boba bubble teas which are hard to come by in Montana. The tea is fantastic and they always have so many flavors depending on your mood and if you have a certain preference they always seem to take time to explain and answer any questions. One of the very best cupcakes I've ever had (and I've had a lot of cake)! I ate the "Strawberry Lemonade" cupcake. The strawberry buttercream was divine! It had fresh strawberry flecked throughout. The cake was perfectly moist, and the lemon curd filling was incredible. I would have just taken a bucket of lemon curd to eat on my way home if they'd had one! Where do i start? The cupcakes are dry and they try to make up for the lack of moisture in the cupcakes by piling on way too much frosting. The frosting is VERY sweet and i always have to scrape off 3/4 of it. The only reason i gave it 2 stars is because of the tea. I've only ever tried their bubble tea and it is always a hit or miss, the first couple of times i didnt know there were options of which type of milk and they put french vanilla coffee creamer in it, it was awful and i ended up dumping it out and just eating the boba. If you get it with actual milk the bubble tea is okay though. This is one of the only places in billings to get bubble tea so that is the only reason i went back a second time and will probably still go when im craving some bubble tea but i will never eat another one of their disgusting cupcakes again. read more

When going into this business I wasn't expecting much; moreover, I walked into a warm and welcoming store. The owner greeted us and was extremely friendly and was eager to assist me, a tea novice, in whatever way possible. I went in a second time a month or more later and he still recognized me and greet me. He explained his different teas, cupcakes, where his store came from, and so on. I will continue coming here. This is the best cupcake place in town. The cupcakes are not only professional looking, but delicious. The flavors range from basic to extravagant and are superb. The tea is fabulous. The staff go out of their way to make suggestions and let you smell the aroma of various tea leaves too. Night on Glacier Bay is one of my faves (from the Montana Tea Company,) it's hard to find and they have it! I love this place. Tea City & Cupcakes have employees that make it a delight to do business with. I purchased a portable tea carrier for hot/loose tea brewing. I went to the storefront near Kohls on Shiloh after an employee in the Rimrock Mall during the Christmas season was so very gracious and helpful. To my great delight, the person who was in the Shiloh store was just as nice and helpful. I was very interested to try this place, as it was supposed to have the best dessert in Montana. Walking in I thought that this was going to be great. Man was I wrong!!! I was told that I might at well order 4 cupcakes as they are cheaper the more you buy. That should've been my first clue to walk away. I ordered 4 anyway. They were the lemon drop, German chocolate, Double chocolate, and wedding white. I was so happy with how they looked, that I didn't think twice about the price( $14 for 4 cupcakes!!!!) I gave the lemon one to my husband since that is one of his favorites. One bite and his face said it all. The cake was a very, very dry odd textured crumb with no lemon flavor at all! The frosting was overly sweet, and again no lemon flavor! The only tiny bit of lemon was in the minuscule amount of lemon curd on the very top of the frosting. My son who loves almost anything chocolate, tried the German chocolate one. Again a very dry oddly textured cake with not a whole lot of flavor, with frosting that seemed to be put on to try and makeup for the shortcomings of the cake. Sadly the Double chocolate was the same. I hoped that at least one of them would be good, but nope. The wedding white was only a little better than the others. Again the frosting, which is piled on, was very very sweet, and felt greasy in my mouth. I would never get anything from this shop ever again. read more
