Since I went with a friend for lunch, my review will be based solely on the food and service, not the bar or alcoholic beverages aspect. I do get kind of a cool speakeasy vibe by having to walk in the front and meander thru the skinny hallway into the back main room. My friend and I were recommended the fish and chips as a "house specialty" and I think they were nothing more than everyday frozen fish and chips I could get from any other restaurant in town. The oil may have been a tad too cool when our fish was fried because the perfectly uniform trapezoid shaped fish pieces were all oily and the crispy batter could of been better if there wasn't so much trapped oil. The pretzel appetizer with cheese sauce was good, and the cheese sauce seemed to be homemade. There are better options but I'd come back and try something else off the menu. Could be a cool place go grab some beers and watch TV there. read more

Arrived at 6, took our order at 6:340 ish, received or food at 7:45 ish. 1 waitress for entire dinner service. Multiple times asked for drinks was told be right back. Didn't happen. Good friend got seated asked for menus never received them and didn't receive a refill on their bar drinks. They left hungry and thirsty. $ lost due to not enough service help. Food is really good but I recommend not coming on a weekend or after 6, food will take a minimum of an hour to get. We ordered another round and it never came so we paid and left. This is a cool spot to grab a drink. I had a bacardi soda water and my husband had a jack n coke. We stopped in on a Saturday afternoon. The food menu looked good. Id prefer if there were flavored bacardis such as bacardi coconut or bacardi lime, as I'm not much of a flavored vodka girl. Ambiance was pretty busy and loud, typical for a bar during college football games. The service was good. Id stop in again for sure. read more

Kids picked this one because of the kids' menu Mac and cheese. Walked in through the Main Street side , passed some security cabinets, bar stand and simple decoration tables. There is a drum sets inside and tv with sports On, which quite entertains the sports fans. Due to memorial holiday, they lack of staff. But the owner seems to handle it well, besides no one helped us with seating. The water and menu served really fast. Older kid finishes the Mac and cheese in 2 minutes due to the small portion and great flavor. Unfortunately the little one cannot stand the little spicy dressing, yummy for the mature taste buds. And I got the salmon salad, I really like the dressing and the freshness of the vegetables, also the portion was just right for me. If the Mac and cheese can be a bigger bowl size, that will be perfect. Recommended for friends gathering and family quick bites. read more

Haven't popped into this rebranded restaurant so decided to give it a try for a late lunch during the holidays. It was a pleasant surprise with lovely decor and some low and some high seating. Rebranded to represent Visalia with the 'V' in Tavern standing out to show local pride. There were many flat screens for sports viewing. The bar was quite busy but many tables were open. The food was quite good. Fish tacos made of cod were on the special board for $16 not $16.99. The whole menu was honest round numbers. The prices were reasonable for the portions. The Hottie Pastrami was flavorful and the meat not bread was the hero. There was only one server who was also the bartender so she was running around the bar and tables. Like a Mexican restaurant gives chips and salsa The Tavern offers complimentary soft pretzels and beer cheese starter. It came out later because the kitchen got busy but the server apologized and said she'd be happy to box it up. The beer cheese had a nice jalapeño kick. It's a pretty homey establishment with lots of locals hanging out at the bar. But if it got any busier the server/bartender would have needed some assistance. The Tavern is worth a try if you're in dt Visalia for decent food at decent prices. read more

Had lunch with friends here today. My first time in and was impressed with the quality of the service. Jackie effortlessly took care of the bar customers and always had a smile on her face. We ordered the dish and chips. This came with xole slaw and fries. In my opinion, the fries were the star of the show. The fish and slaw, well unfortunately the slaw was pretty flavorless and the fish reminded me of the frozen fish patties from the frozen food section. There is definitely room for improvement. Now dont get me wrong, the service is stellar, the rest of the other food ive tried here has been great! Just alittle disjointed but ill still come back. Been to this hidden spot twice now and both times was delicious. I had the meat market flatbread and it was wonderful. My friend had the margarite flatbread and she loved hers too. I had lunch here today and it was fantastic! Jen is the real deal and makes all the sides and sauces in small batches. There is no "Walk In" cooler on site, so fresh food comes in three times a week, leading to real freshness. We had a Smash Burger with a salad and the Tri Tip Dip with Mac n Cheese plus Cole Slaw. This stuff did not come out of a bottle, it was hand made. The Cole Slaw was especially flavorful and unique in a good way. The staff were attentive and responsive, the food was exceptional! Finding the place made us do a double take, though. The front sandwich board sign was not out, and it did not look inviting. Once we walked back, we were greeted with smiles and "hello's". We have now eaten here as a family 3 different times. Every time all four of us had a fantastic experience and exceptional food. It is rare for us to eat out in Visalia and everyone in our family to be happy with meal and this place has delivered on all three occasions. My boys drink a lot of water during a meal and generally the service here has been so attentive that neither of them have ran out of water once. Eating out is expensive but it is well worth it when you have a great venue, great food, and great service. read more

First time here and we loved it! It was nearly empty on a Monday at 2pm. Their complimentary appetizer is hefty - soft pretzels and beer cheese. The tri tip dip and beer Mac and cheese were favorites at our table of 4. The only issue was the chicken bites appetizer looked dangerously undercooked. Second time eating here and it was again very impressive! Place was full on a Saturday around 5:30/6pm but everyone was being attended to. Our gold-star server (I think her name is Jacqueline) provided us with samples of some brews since I was unsure of what to get and gave us so much helpful, detailed information and attention to make our dining experience exquisite. I also LOVE that they serve some 1852 brews on tap. Local supporting local - keep it up!! Food was fresh and you can tell they go out of their way to make the dining experience comfortable, enjoyable, and tailored to the person they are serving. Whoever hires the staff does a great job choosing the right personality type to work here! Husband had the smash burger which he really liked. Had the smash burger. It was excellent! Nice clean friendly place and staff. Huge bar which seems to be the most popular spot. Plenty of tables also if you prefer. I'm working here out of state and eat alone mostly. Some places one feels uncomfortable alone but not here. Going to Tavern on Main for dinner tonight. Im so looking forward to it. Even though Im ordering pizza for pick up, I always try to leave enough time to belly up to the bar for just one yummy Dark Horse 50/50 beverage while I wait. The more often I go there, the more people I get to know. Always nice to be welcomed in like that. Chef Jen is amazing and her menu is too! Full size delicious chicken wings, deviled eggs, pork belly... just to name a few appetizer items. I have yet to hear of anyone being disappointed with their food. We sat down at the bar and got talking to some people, the new owner to be exact! He treated us with the pretzel that was warm and log shaped. It came with a cheese sauce and a homemade mustard sauce. OMG! They were fantastic! We came for the fried bologna sandwich and it did not disappoint, the fries are good. We also had the tavern burger with a side salad and both were very good. Then............the owner made us some fresh beignets that were warm sweet and so freeking good!. Service was the best, efficient, chatty, and fun! The ambiance could use some help but this is the third week for this new owner so who knows. The rest if the place makes up for it. Give it a try!
