This would be a great restaurant in any town. The fact that it is in Ennis where the options are limited is a big plus. The beet salad is a great starter. I had the Elk Osso Bucco (which was amazing), and my friends had the special of the evening ravioli with white sauce (rich and savory). Our second trip was on a Friday evening. All you can fish fry!! And, it was fantastic!The fish came in good sized chunks that were tender and juicy with just the right amount of light (tempura like) batter. The accompanying fries were cooked just right. Absolutely outstanding must visit in Ennis! The best spot for dinner!!! We came at opening at 3pm on a Saturday, the first diners in the door. We were warmly greeted by Bruce the owner and shown to a lovely bistro table in the window at the front, where we could watch passerbys. Bruce was such a delight to chat with that we got to gabbing quite a bit ahead of ordering our tasty items. At Bruce's recommendation, my hubby got a Midas Crush IPA from MAP Brewing, which he LOVED. I got a lovely glass of white wine, which went perfectly with our pheasant Rangoon. A sweet yet savory treat, I have recommend trying this app! I was laser focused on venison stroganoff and knew I was ordering that when I stepped in the door. Bruce encouraged my hubby into the elk osso bucco and I'm so glad he did. The venison stroganoff was light, lovely and fresh - I'm not sure you'd even know it was venison. Absolutely yum. But holy cow (elk?), that osso bucco! I think the best thing I ate on our entire trip... it's rich, balanced, and so so good. As a rule I tend to order elk whenever it is on the menu. If you've been waiting to try it, GET IT HERE. Absolutely outstanding!!! Bruce brilliantly recommended the Brickmason to pair alongside our meal. This lovely Lodi red balanced perfectly with our dishes. Highly recommend. Bruce's wife is a pastry genius. Don't sleep on that pastry case - omg the lemon macarons.... This is the best spot in Ennis for a delicious meal, start to finish. Bonus is that Bruce is a gem too. (Disclosure: I am friends with the owner. Having said that, this is an objective a review as possible.) Tavern 287 is, quite possibly, one of my favorite restaurants in the country. The menu is not expansive, but the preparations for said items are top notch! The bison meatloaf is consistently delicious, while the rotating ravioli (all their pasta is scratch made) is amazing! And if you're in the mood for appetizers, the pheasant rangoon can't be missed! The steak is probably my least favorite item on the menu, but it is still a decent steak. And let's talk about the desserts -- I highly recommend the cream puffs if they are available! And there is a rotating selection of macarons with both traditional and unorthodox flavors that are pleasing to the palate. There is no alcohol service at this time. However, in the evenings, the adjoining bar next door is available for purchasing your favorite libations. And you can also BYOB. Prices are in-line, if not slightly lower, than other restaurants in town. 10/10, would highly recommend! read more

Now there were empty tables here but, if you don't want my money I am more than happy to take it elsewhere (which we did-just a few doors past 286.25) Why can't people be honest? We just had a great diner at the Tavern. My wife had the Elk Oso Buco and I had the Elk Stroganoff. Both were excellent. We started with a beet salad, there tomato soup and Chili. Everything was delicious. The servers were friendly and attentive. We were lucky we stopped in when they opened because all tables filled quickly. Very quant. The owner told us many times he has to turn away patrons. Not enough tables to accommodate those that want to dine in. I suggest you make reservations or go when they open at 4:30. Enjoy! read more

WOW! Hidden gem. Need reservations as this is a small, quaint restaurant with such attention to detail that they only service a select few. Bruce the owner waited on us and just made us feel at home. To start: food bread and whipped butter & herbs de Provence. Slightly sweet, highly addicting. Bison meatloaf was hearty but didn't feel heavy. If this were Served for breakfast or lunch you could definitely tackle the day without the need for an immediate nap. (Not enough emphasis is given these days on how you feel after a meal) Soups: -Lentil soup was a winner Well cooked and hearty, good flavor of broth. -Tomato basil I wouldn't say was a miss today but was heavy on fennel. We drove four hours out of our normal route to go back to the tavern. Everything on the menu is delicious. Our experience was nothing short than stellar including the service. The cook here honors the animal through the way he cooks it. You can tell the meat is treasured and given the deserved importance. We always eat at least one meal here on our annual trip to fish the Madison River, even though we stay 45 miles away. The owner serves you, and he's careful not to take on more customers than he can serve well (you must have a reservation, at least for dinner). The food, service and atmosphere are all great. Not at all what you expect from a little rural town in Montana. We had a delicious baked brie appetizer, that was plenty for 4. Then I had the homemade ravioli which, on this night, was stuffed with bison and goat cheese and it was excellent. It did sound like the ravioli stuffing varied from day to day. Whoa. We were stopping in the tiny town of Ennis for gas and a good meal during a 12 hour drive from Jackson, WY to home in WA state. This spot was almost a hole in the wall, but we saw the plates through a window and stopped everything. Let's start with some highlights: 1. Warm bread and whipped herbed butter were compliments of the house. 2. Our meals were clearly made from scratch (using local ingredients) and piping hot. 3. We were treated to UH-MAZING lemon berry macaroons after dining. The owner's wife makes them, and clearly she should open a bakery. 4. No wait time, and clear COVID cleaning protocol. Their menu was perfectly sized- options without losing quality. Whoa. We had the Wagu tenderloin (from a farmer bear by) with truffle potatoes and green beans. We ALSO had the bison goat cheese ravioli with a tomato sauce. Damn. We ALSOOOO had the truffle tater tots, which rocked. Kind of a cool feature- you order your own drinks through the door of an adjoining bar. Very small town and fun! The service was personal, friendly and perfectly attentive. We sincerely hope these folks stay forever. This was a phenomenal "secret" in a tiny Montana town. Please go. You will NOT regret it. Next we want to get the fish too. Yum. read more

This little bistro is lovely! The food is inspired. The service was perfect (just the right level of engaged without being obtrusive). And the ambiance is on its way to matching the mission of this gem. It is clear that these owners have all the right stuff and I am so looking forward to hearing of their future growth and success! I enjoyed the Smoked Pheasant Rangoon, the Elk Osso-Bucco and the Strawberry Rhubarb Crisp. They present a homemade macaroon with the check, that will put an even bigger smile on your face. (The only reason I'm not giving the 5star is due to the bar noise from next door that intruded upon the dining room atmosphere). After chatting with Bruce, I understood that having the door to the bar next door open, is necessary for now, in order to serve alcohol.
